The red wooden door opened, and the woman from the blue light, poke her head out. The cottage seemed to be straight out of a book, With a stone roof and chimney, as well as ivy growing up the walls. “Hurry children, there is only so much time” We follow her into a quaint room, lit by a fireplace. “Sit” She commanded, pointing to a purple, velvet sofa, and sitting in a matching armchair, across the way.
“I'm Adam, and this is…” I try.
“I know who you are, Prince Adam, and Princess Maddilyn.” The witch said matter of factly.
“You're a prince!” mad glared at me. “Did you forget, to maybe mention that.”
“Why are you mad at me, Princess Maddilyn.”
“Will you stop.” the witch interrupted. “Your mother kept a lot of secrets, and we don't have a lot of time, or I fear they will be frozen forever.”
“You said your mother, Do you mean we are siblings?” I asked, then why is she an orphan, a thought I couldn't help but think.
“Ah, for one of your mother's secrets” The witch got up and clapped her hands, looking us both in the eyes. “To start, your more than just siblings, your twins”
“TWINS?” Mad and I interrupt
“Shush, I'm not done.” She grabbed an old book off the shelf, before sitting down and resting it on her lap. “When you two were born, we discover that you two had certain abilities.” She flipped through pages of the book and showed us a page labeled The First Law of Thermodynamics. “You see, when we went into the great war, there were laws of forces, they were not objects, or things, just a part of life. But when the war was over, my family, took these laws, and distributed them between eight families. One for each Family.”
“What does that have to do with us, this is known history, the families went into hiding, still not to be found.“
“Will you shut-up Adam” Mad rolled her eyes.
“I was getting there.” the witch continued “Anyways, the laws were distributed, one per family, Your family Receiving the First Law of Thermodynamics; since then, the first child born of each generation would receive the gift, and maintain the balance of the universe. No two people having it at once. When you two were born, the power was split. One to destroy, and one to create. “
“Wells who’s who?” Mad asks I could tell she was disappointed.
“No one knows.” the witch closed the book. “The thing is, sixteen years ago when the families went into hiding, they were hiding from you. Your powers unbalanced, cause natural disasters all around, each disaster, endangering one of the families”
The witch sighed “You had to be separated, you two together, were dangerous for the world. Adam, being the successor to the king, stayed, while Maddilyn you went to the orphanage”
“Storytime was fun, and as much as I love hearing about our complicated past, My kingdom is frozen. And this little rock,” I take out the rock to show the timer, stating we had hours left. “Kinda has us on a time limit. So how do we save the kingdom?”
“Well, that's complicated. You see with your births causing the disturbance, we would need to return all the forces back into nature, to be as intended by the universe.”
“So how do we do that?” Mad Asks, all too eager for this conversation to be over.
“You have to take this stone back to its resting place, and there, you must… must”
“Must what?” Mad asks.
“You know what” I say conflicted
“What that’s absurd, plus she said all of the forces must return.” the witch only nodded “No, it can’t be, even if we do, how will the others know too?”
“You are all connected, when you do, they will know it’s time.”
The hike up The mountain was Quiet, thoughts were racing through my head, and all my limbs felt numb. Was I really ready to die? I always knew I was different, But I was dangerous. The armies that surrounded my life, weren't there to protect me from the people, but the people from me.
When we reach the town, what feels like six hours later, I dared open my mouth. “How are you doing?”
“How am I doing?” I nod. “Oh, you know I'm fine. I only met a friend, to find out he’s my twin brother, who has been lying to me since I’ve met him.”
“I'm sorry” She stops in her tracks and spins around to face me.
“Your sorry, I don't know why, it’s not like you can change the fact, that in order to save the entire world, plants, animals, humans, you name it, from being frozen forever, we have to... to....”
I follow her through the town. “Before we head to the forest, can we go to the castle” But I don't dare say another word after that.
We reach the castle, and go through the wide wooden doors. “What are we doing here?” She questions.
“There are a few things I need to do, as well as show you.” I go down the hall. “Follow me.” I lead her through the halls of frozen people until we reached the throne room. We made our way through the doors, into the open space, and I urged her into a corner. There a huge Painting of our mother hung. “This is our mother, looks just like you, Same violet eyes, soft pale skin, and slim figure”. I pulled her to the thrones. “This is our father, Acts just like you. The same spark for adventure, snarky attitude, and gravitating smile.”
She was smiling, with tears in her eyes, as well as mine, but we still had a job to do. I take the stone out and look at the time, and now three hours to do it. She follows me up the stairs into a tower. “This was mother's chamber when she was still a mistress, but after she married father, she used it to store things. Some time ago, I found this locket” I show her the heart locket that looks just like the stone, thorns and all. “It has two different children inside. And I never thought anything of it, but I know now this is me and you.” I rummage through a chest to pull out two identical daggers. Clipping the locket around her neck, we head out the room, down the stairs, through the halls, and to the forest. We ran, hand in hand , through the tree’s, reaching the stones resting place, with five minutes to spare.
“Thank you” She looked at me “for letting me know a family” she paused “Are you ready?”
“Who’s ever ready for death?” I say, as a last attempt as a joke. “Are you ready?”
“Honestly, I question why I'm doing this. Why we're doing this.”
“Why?”
“If you die, there is no heir to the throne, it would be asking for another war. One that might just end humanity. Sure they are frozen, but they're alive.”
“But they are not living? At least this way they have a chance.”
She nodded, grabbing the other side of the stone. “On the count of three?”
“One” I whisper
“Two” she breathed
“Three” We say together as we forced the daggers into our hearts.
I could feel my body hit the ground, and before my last heartbeat, I felt all eight of them joining nature's forces, all before the last beat, and darkness. Sometimes things have to fall apart to make room for better things.
