The Worst Kind of Positive

To Be or Not To Be

To Be or Not To Be

Dec 01, 2018

Charlie stares at the plain building from inside her car.

Another woman goes in with a hardly noticeable bump on her belly.

Charlie breaths in deeply and lets it out slowly.

She leans back against the headrest and her hand automatically went to her stomach.

She gives the building another hard glare before shaking her head.

She puts her keys in the ignition and turns them. Her response is the reoccurring grinding sound.

"No no. Oh, come on!" She yells and slams her hand into the steering wheel.

After a plethora of unsuccessful attempts, Charlie slumps against the steering wheel.

She pulls out her phone and pauses. Who am I going to call? She thinks to herself. Fiona is at work. Mr. Anders is teaching right now.

Charlie grimaces. Evan is going to be pissed.

He picks up on the second ring.

"What's wrong? How are you? Is the baby okay?" Evan says immediately.

"Calm down. My car won't start ... again. I need a ride back to the apartment."

Charlie sits in the passenger seat of Evan's car as he finishes bringing all of her stuff out of her car.

He slams the door when he gets into the driver's seat. "I can call Tony and tell him to pick up your car and take it to the shop."

Charlie nods and bites her lip.

Evan's hands tighten on the steering wheel. "What the hell were you thinking, Charlie?"

"I don't know. I didn't- I couldn't do it." Charlie says. "I'm going to do this. It's going to be hell but I'm going to do this."

Evan reaches over and grabs Charlie's hand. "Hey, you are not alone. You are not even close to it. We will get through this together. Just, please never go to that place again."

Charlie gives a sad sniff. "Ugh, these hormones are going to kill me. I'm crying at everything."

"It can't be that bad." Evan states matter-of-factually.

"Oh really. This morning I cried because I've been crying too much." Charlie ends with an eyebrow raised and her arms crossed.

Evan winces. "Okay, maybe it is that bad. But hey, we'll figure it out together."

Charlie smiles.

When they got back to the apartment it was starting to get dark outside. Evan turns off the car and turns to Charlie. "Just to warn you, Asahi came back home."

Charlie groans. "I thought he was still in Florida for his 'needed' vacation."

"He had to come back early because the hotel he was staying at kicked him out."

"Again?"

"Smoking in his room again." Evan says and gets out of the car. He goes to the rear seat and gets Charlie's bag.

"I can carry my own stuff you know." Charlie says as she gets out of the car and crosses her arms at Evan.

"I can barely carry your bag it is so damn heavy. Are you sure you aren't carrying a collection of bricks in here?"

"No that's in my other bag."

Evan chuckles and walks up the stairs, two at a time, leaving Charlie panting and slowly climbing after him.

"Why do we live on the top floor again?" Charlie says, breathing heavily.

Evan contemplates for a second before answering, "Because we're broke college kids."

Charlie gives him a solemn nod.

Evan opens the apartment door for Charlie and as soon as she steps in she is hit in the face with a thick cloud of smoke.

"Asahi! How many times do we have to tell you? They don't allow smoking in this building."

Asahi walks into the small living room without a shirt, like usual. "How many times do I have to tell you that I don't give a shit?"

"Charlie," Evan says and turns to her. "Wait outside for a second, okay?"

Charlie nods and leaves the room.

Evan turns back to Asahi and sighs. "Look, bud. You missed a lot. You really can't smoke here now."

Asahi scoffs. "Says who?"

Evan's eyes narrow. "Says the living being in Charlie's stomach."

Asahi's facial features soften. He takes a long drag of his cigarette and exhales as he stamps out the cigarette in the ashtray on the kitchen counter. He steps on the trashcan lid release and swipes the ashtray and his pack of cigarettes into the trash. He bumps against Evan's shoulder as he crosses the room to the window and opens it wide.

"She should wait a little bit before coming inside." Asahi says and walks to his room.

"Asahi." Evan calls.

He opens his room's door and looks back at Evan while leaning on it.

"Thank you."

Asahi rolls his eyes and closes the door behind him.

After waiting another couple minutes, Charlie opens the door herself and looks around. "Where'd Asahi go?"

"To his room." Evan responds.

Charlie winces. "To smoke?"

Evan shakes his head. "I don't think so. I think ... I think he just quit."

Charlie quirks an eyebrow. "For the baby?"

Evan shrugs. "I guess."

"Aw," Charlie says, her eyes tearing up. "I should make him some cookies."

Evan rolls his eyes. "You just want to eat some cookies."

Charlie gasps and places her hand against her chest. "That is not at all accurate."

It was a miracle and because of Evan, that most of the cookie dough made it into the oven.

Charlie continued to lick the spoon. "I think I'm in love with your baking Evan."

He chuckles and runs his finger along bowl, gathering leftover cookie dough before sucking it off his finger.

Charlie tracks his movements and shakes certain thoughts from her head.

"They should be done about now." Evan states and grabs the adorable, pink oven mitts.

When he takes them out, the sweet aroma cascades throughout the room and Charlie moans at the scent.

Charlie could hardly wait for them to cool. Once she receives the okay from Evan she devours two cookies.

"A gentle reminder that these are for someone else." Evan says.

Charlie pouts but reluctantly places the rest of the cookies on a colorful plate.

She knocks on Asahi's door whose music can be heard from the hallway.

He answers with an irritated look. "What?"

She waves the plate in his face, smiling. "We made cookies. I did most of the work."

"No, she didn't!" Evan yells from the kitchen.

Asahi takes the plate from her with a soft thank you and Charlie turns to leave.

"Charlie." Asahi says.

"Yeah." She says, looking over her shoulder.

"Do you want me to castrate the guy who ... you know." He gestures to her stomach.

Charlie laughs. "No, but thank you for the offer."
