Conventions

Dec 17, 2018

This year at MFF 2018 (Midwest Fur Fest) in Rosemont, Illinois, there were over 10,200 attendees and $92,000 USD raised for Sit Stay Read. For those of you who don't know, Sit Stay Read is an organization that helps children who are struggling with reading and are given a trained and certified dog that allows the children to relax and read around without fear of judgement. This actually allows the kids to read 47.8% better than other struggling peers. You can check the link in the description for more about Sit Stay Read.

Anthrocon 2018 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania raised roughly $42,000 USD for South Hills Pet Rescue. South Hills Pet Rescue has 3 part-time staff members but is mostly run by volunteers who house and train dogs with behavioral issues. These dogs are then put up for adoption to find forever homes. For more information, go to the link in the description.

(I would go to name other cons, but I have no time or patience to find every detail in their donations.)

Conventions usually have three things.

1. A Dealer's Den- this is a place where attendees can buy art or merchandise in a fairly large room full of tables and vendors. Typical things you may find in the Den are artists that furs can commission to draw their fursona, fluffy tails, hats, shirts, and furry drinks (personally, I fancy Furry Fuel). Its often packed with people taking pictures and buying everything in sight. Different things can cost a variety of prices like $30 for a head shot of a fursona or $10 for a sweater. There were hats on sale in at MFF where paw print hats were $15.

2. A dance competition- exactly what it sounds like. Usually between fursuit wearers but every so often they may do a freestyle competition called Floor Wars when furs who don't have suits can compete alongside their fuzz wearing companions. There are multiple divisions from Novice to Veteran and each division is given a top 3. There are typically 21 dances or so in Anthrocon.

3. Some panels- these are activities you can do during a convention. Most consist of talking about topics some people can relate to. An example of this would be Captain Boones' talk about anxiety and overcoming it. Another would be Uncle Kage telling stories about things he's seen and done. Other panels are games and activities such as fursuit games like musical chairs, red light/ green light, and the sort. Another activity would be one that was in Confurence 0 called Make Your Own Tail where-- yes-- you made a tail for yourself to hook on your belt.

There are also some uncommon things at each conventions. Anthrocon has a fursuit parade where colorful creatures march around the hotel and/or convention space. The convention also has lots of nearby restaurants that will be happy to serve furry fans. [I think] BLFC (Biggest Little Fur Con) has a group photo in a large room and allows attendees to stay til 3 AM.
