Edward has been my best friend for the longest time. Though I think I get along well with the people of Circus, I think that Ed matches my entire whole being. Ed also mans the spotlight and since we are in good synch, Trent has been putting me up with Ed on whatever show it is, which is good and we also man the Spotlights for the main acts and the Trapeze located on the other tent.
I and Ed ate our food together in the mess hall with Althea. Althea’s a small lady with a pixie-like feature. Her hair pointed in all direction at the end and a small patch of long hair is tied on her back. On the other hand, Ed has his golden mess of hair seated on top his head. He may not care about it, but his face stands out because of his hair. I kept mine a bit long and since it is black, I blend well with the crowd. Anyway, Althea’s a helper too but she helps on the act itself. Just between you and me- Althea’s gift is extraordinaire - she can see the future. What made her the supporting role? I don’t know but her ability to see what’s about to happen has saved us – the entire circus in many troubles. Maybe that ability has given her an effortless way on the top, to be Trent’s right hand. Not that I am jealous or something, but she is the same as my age and I think that being one of the most important part of the circus is an impossible task for my age, unless you’re Althea.
Ed has been a big talker. I usually spend my day listening to all his pointless dramas, stupidities and other nonsense but hey, I enjoy his stories regardless of whatever it is about. He and Althea kept talking with each other as I silently eat and think about the dream that I had this morning. For me, that’s not too bothering since it’s just a girl or so. Dreams are quite common but this one is quite different – I have been seeing it for a while now and I don’t know why.
After we eat, I and Ed went to Tanya’s animal house to help her feed her ‘babies’. By means of babies, I mean the Lion, the elephant, the rhino, the bear and all her animals except the wolf. Since Tanya is an animal whisperer, touching these huge animals would be easy as she has somewhat ‘told’ them to be nice to me and Ed, well, except for the Wolf (again). I think that’s her favorite and it doesn’t like anyone other than Tanya. The wolf a.k.a. “Howl” was not performing either. He just sits in the corner and acts as if he is Tanya’s most loyal guard.
“Hi boys” Tanya told us with a smile. She opened the gate and led us in. I replied a smile while Ed started the talking. I took some food and went straight to the wolf. It snarled and as always, Tanya tells it to stop. Yes, I have been eyeing the wolf and been trying to befriend it for a while now but it really hates anything other than Tanya. Instead, Tanya chuckled, took Howl’s food from me and gave it to him. Ed was rocking the feeding game. He was downright feeding the Lions at ease and the lion? They just ate like there’s no talkative blonde guy standing in front of them.
After the feeding and cleaning time (which took about 3 hours), it’s almost time for lunch time. Ed has decided to stroll around and maybe to try messing up with the Clowns or the other freaks but we found Althea instead, who is seating on a hedge of hay, and her eyes wide-open. Here pupils are glowing white and that means that she is currently looking on the future. Unlike the other freaks in this Circus, Althea can’t really control what or when she sees but as soon as she does, big events usually happen. Ed and I nodded and agreement: he ran straight to Trent’s tent to call him and I stayed to comfort Althea.
“i….i…is that you, Gale?” Althea called around. She cannot see around while her vision is playing inside her. I went to her side, took her handkerchief and wiped the sweat out of her face.
“I’m here” I replied. There’s a part of me that thinks of something will happen again and that events usually leads us to abandoning our current location. I crouched beside her and she touched my right knee and her hands started to tremble.
“What’s happening?” I asked.
“Trent...Trent! Bring me to Trent now!” she told me, half-panicked.
I took her hand and escorted her so she can climb on my back. As I faced the other side to walk, I saw Ed and Trent running to our direction. I took my first step and felt a strong burst of vibration on my foot.
“Did you feel that?” Althea asked me.
“Yes. What’s that?” I asked her while walking towards Trent and Ed.
“I hope I know. This is the first time” Althea said.
“First time of what?” I replied.
“I……I…..I don’t know” Althea whispered. As soon as she replied, Trent signaled me to bring Althea to his Tent. Arthur was already on the tent’s entrance as we arrived. He took Althea from me and we were dismissed.
---
“That sucks” Ed said as we walked away from the tent. I have always known Althea’s power but I have never been able to hear from her – most especially in interesting things like these. I wish I could see things like that too, I don’t care if I see something scary or what but at least in some way, I wouldn’t feel much detached from the people around, from the people who are like me as we are different. Yes, I am a late bloomer like Ed. Both of us are not aware of our abilities and I would do anything to know about it. As to what Trent said, we should learn to wait because some abilities bloom late as they are stronger and far more special than those who have discovered their abilities at a younger age. Some of the freaks from our show has tried to discover their own powers in the weirdest, gruesome ways which made them a literal freak. One of these guys, from what I heard tried to electrocute himself. Well, he was alive but his skin was burnt from head to toe. He lost his hair and never got his skin color back. In the latter, we found out that his ability is to make his palms hot enough to cook food. It may sound weak but that’s it – he was gifted with something but not as much as the others like Flint, who can produce and control fire or maybe like Flint’s twin sister, Blanche, who can do the same but with ice.
I think this similarity between Ed and I made us much closer and stronger. Some says that we may just turn out to be a normal human but I trust Trent more. He has this ability to see one’s ability and I trust that he is not bluffing that Ed and I have ours. Above all, I don’t want to be a normal human – these people are the worse, the most judgmental and destructive kinds. I have met many people and the worse kind are the normal humans, or rather, those who are not capable of doing stuff like ours. It’s not that I am saying that our kind is a superior being, it’s just that the normal human’s insecurity for our kind makes them more prone into doing ‘things’ and these things make matters worse.
As I was about to enter the trailer, I heard the ‘bell’ that usually tells us to gather around. This bell is located on the topmost of the largest tent and whenever this one rings, it is mandatory for us to attend. This usually happens about three times a week, at maximum. You don’t really have to run or what when you hear it, but this bell signifies that we have 5 minutes to finish what we are doing and head to the largest tent. Having so, I closed the door to my room again and headed to the meeting place.
I arrived on the meeting place with Ed. Everybody was scurrying around, as if something just happened, or maybe they already know what will happen. From the entrance, I can see Trent, Althea and Arthur on the Ring Master’s small circular stage. The hall was decorated as is; yellow spotlights are open; the banners are still on and the seats are clean as always. During these meetings, Althea usually seats with me and Ed but this one is different, at it gives me the chills whenever I look at Althea. Her mixed expression says it all. I and Ed went to the highest place and sat. The twins Flint and Blanche are there.
“What’s happening? ‘Thea does not look good.” Flint started.
“That’s why we’re here.” Blanche answered. While moving sideways so Ed and I can seat.
Ed started talking with the twins but he had to stop as we heard the microphone tap from Arthur.
“Uhhh…. Good afternoon to all. Everybody's attention please.” He started. “We called for a meeting for some announcements. Trent, the floor is yours”
Trent took the microphone and took a deep breath, “Good Afternoon, I will make this quick. Lunch time will be and must be served asap. Althea’s got another vision of something that, as you know, signifies that we should find another location, a city to relocate.”
Whispers filled the area. Trent gave a few seconds before he continued.
“Yes, I know, this is sudden and we will be as early as we can, you know what to do, prioritize your stuff and get all ready for the departure. We’ll leave first thing on the morning.” Trent added.
“What’s happened?” asked one of the Clown. “We usually have a day or two before leaving, plus, we’ve only been here for a month” Whispers, groans and sarcastic snickers followed.
Trent raised his fist, which signaled everyone to listen. “I know this is all of a sudden and I also don’t like it. From the previous vision that we had on the previous location, Our Althea has seen a notable event that will require us to leave. As you all know, we are always visited by lots of people but there are these kinds of visitor that we do not entertain. This is for the betterment of everybody, especially to those who does not possess a gift that can protect one’s self.
“So something will try to hurt us?” Tanya inquired. She was seating near the stage with Howl on her side. Her question signaled another batch of whispers and other comments.
“I am looking forward for everyone’s cooperation and trust. Now, everybody is dismissed” Trent gave a one, loud clap, avoiding Tanya’s question.
Questions like “what?”, “What’s happening?”, “Why is it all of a sudden?” filled the tent but Trent already left. The crowd left to their seats, some are still ranting but I, Ed, Flint and Blanche pushed to the crowd to go to Tanya who was talking with Serena. She saw us and waited for our arrival. As we arrived, Tanya started “I don’t really know what’s happening. But for great measures, let’s just pack up. I’ll let you know when I find something out” She patted Ed’s shoulder and left with Howl. Serena rolled her eyes (as usual), whipped her red hair and followed Tanya to the exit without even talking to us. Yes, that’s Serena – the Circus Diva, literally!
“I really hate that lady” Blanche whispered while looking at Serena. Flint chuckled and said, “At least we have something in common”. The four of us headed to our respective trailers and started packing up.
