The world has a way of making you take the lemons it hands you, forces them down your throat, and expects you to swallow them whole, tough skin and seeds included. Yet, we humans need to know that there are so many ways we can win, after all, we have free will.
I moved aside as Gus helped him sit up. It was horrible to watch him struggle, cough up some blood, heave and all to keep his unbelievable ego afloat. He barely glanced at me, it was as if he wanted me to not be there.
"Why am I here?" He asked as Gus wiped the blood that dripped down his chin.
"You should thank Jason for that," He replied. "And Lola here too."
"Oh, I'm very grateful to her especially," He scoffed. "Thank you so much for all of this."
He glanced at me from the corner of his eyes and spat out some blood into the cloth Gus held to his mouth.
"You don't have to be so bitter mate," Gus said. "I was referring to the fact that she stopped you from choking on your own blood."
"All it would have caused was uncomfortable suffering," Liam said. "One cannot die twice."
"She's been here less than a week. It's more your fault that she acted out," Gus spat. "How was she supposed to know all of the madness that goes on here without your help?"
"She should have simply listened to me and kept her mouth freaking shut as I'd asked!"
"There you go again, expecting people to simply follow your commands and never question them."
"That was the least she could have done Gus! All I asked was for her to sit back and not speak up. You know how Samantha gets when someone challenges her!"
"At least one of us should see clearly since you seem to have lost a couple of screws when those goons fucked you over!" Gus nearly screamed. "You made the choice to keep her here for God knows what reason and I have backed you up without question, like the fool I am! So forgive me for trying to see reason."
"Stop taking her side dammit!"
"Enough, I'm seated right here!" I cried.
"Where the hell is my shirt!" Liam yelled, trying to get up.
"Stop ignoring me!" I shot back. "I know that I screwed up, okay? I know that I should have kept my mouth shut. I know I should have trusted you even though you're a complete pain in the ass most of the time. I'm sorry that Jason worked you over. If it weren't for Gus, you'd barely sit up right now. I am so sorry that you have to deal with me. I'm sorry I died and you had to be the reaper!"
And that's when all hell broke loose. I had no idea where the tears came from but they rolled down my cheeks effortlessly.
"I can't believe I'm dead," I gasped. "Of all the things to happen, I had to die! Why? WHY!!"
"Oh for Pete's sake!" Liam cussed.
I was losing it. Utterly and completely losing my marbles. The reality of my demise had hit me so hard I felt as if it had no end. I was not prepared to be dead, who the hell is anyway?!
"Oh God, I-can't-breathe."
"Are you kidding me?" He said under his breath.
"Liam, cut it out!!"
"Lola, look at me," Gus said, kneeling down beside me. "You're fine. Just calm down."
"Gus-I can't-breathe-"
"You're simply having your reality crisis," he replied. "Everything is okay. You've made it this far and after how you spoke to Sam, I'm sure you'll make it through all of this! Now, do me a favor and take a couple of deep breaths."
"I need a damn shirt, Gus, if you're done playing doctor," Liam said, distastefully.
"There you go," Gus replied. "Now, hold it together because you're the sane one here for the moment."
"Finally."
"Liam, I'm saying this because you're a dear friend and I am the only one who's not afraid to tell you this to your face," Gus started, gathering his stuff and shutting his briefcase. "You're a prick and what's worse, a complete arsehole. You seem to be better since your humor matches your soul at the moment so, take care of her and get yourself another shirt."
"I can't bloody move on my own you dimwit!" Liam spat back.
"Well, she can so use your freaking Plan B!" Gus replied, calmly. "Take care, Lola."
