This episode depicts our family tradition from the point-of-view of when I was a child so it may not necessarily reflect actual Buddhist beliefs or traditions.
We didn't go to Buddhist church (we don't call it a "temple" which is probably what it really is called), but our family members prayed at the altar regularly.
On a side note, I grew up to appreciate Kayama Yuzo's music and ended up buying his CD as an adult.
Kim hasn't been to Hawaii to visit family since she was three. Her privileged classmates rub it in her face. When her aunt dies, she and her family make the trip to Hawaii where she experiences a different way of life, fun, and mischief.
