Claire
She was out of her mind. Heidi was out of her damn mind if she thought I was going to break into the room of some frat boy wannabe and steal a thumb drive like the plot of a middle school heist movie. And yet here I was putting on my favorite combat boots and a glittery top to do just that. I glared at her reflection in the mirror for a second before returning to my eyeliner.
I walked into the living room and found Hannah waiting nervously on the couch she looked better than I had ever seen her. Her hair fell in thick, loose, waves and her long legs were on display in her royal blue romper, she looked fantastic.
“You ready?” I fidgeted with the hem of my shirt, suddenly self-conscious.
“Yeah, you?” She wasn’t nervous, I realized, she was excited.
“I guess,” I sunk onto the couch next to her and sighed. “Does this sound crazy to you?”
“I mean maybe, but it sounds fun too.”
I looked at her for a second and realized I barely knew her and yet she was willing to do this for an almost stranger. “Why are you doing this?”
“Because this is what college is all about! Going to parties, flirting with guys, doing stuff that’s a little crazy for the story you’ll have later. I mean isn’t it fun to think we’ll all laugh about this one day?”
“You’re… not wrong, I guess,” I shrugged, she had a point. I tried to relax and think of how funny the story would be, but right now my anxiety was too high. I picked at the hole in my jeans.
“Hey, it’s going to be ok, Claire.” Hannah put her hand over mine and smiled reassuringly. “I mean, what’s the worst that could happen?”
I huffed a laugh and looked for some wood to knock on so we would never find out.
