Dragons have always been a source of controversy. While once they might have been more present in the lives of humans, that is clearly no longer the case. There have been many different theories of what happen to them, but the following have been the most talked about.

...that the Sorceress [redacted] feared their power, feared that if they rose up against her, they would destroy her plans for the future, and so she hunted them down before advancing against Valoren. Any that survived might have gone into hiding.

...fearing the dragons, humans started to attack them with the magic that they still possessed at the time, and to protect themselves, the dragons went into hiding...

...and while not as popular a theory, some still consider that the dragons simply started to die out as the magic in the world started to fade away.

But of course, no one can say for certain.
