The next day I was back at the castle for magic lessons. This time I headed to the department for mages, hiding myself along the way to make sure that Chrom wouldn't spot me.
I was called upon when I entered the department.
"Tiana Bracklin?" asked a blue haired woman.
"Yes."
"I'm Lux Macedine. I've been tasked with teaching you magic."
I bowed. "Thank you, I'll be in your care."
"A polite one, aren't you?" Lux smiled and led me to a spare room.
Lux was a mature cool beauty with straight azure hair leading down to the middle of her back. All the mages in the castle wore red robes, and Lux's was spread to the side to show her rather revealing inner outfit. Her body was shapely in all the right places, especially in the chest area.
I want to stick my face into those two melons...
Dammit, I lost my innocence because of past me's memories.
Sorry, current me.
I snapped out of my reverie as Lux started talking.
"Has anyone ever taught you magic before?" asked Lux.
I shook my head. "No, since I'm still young my father thought it would be too dangerous, and I could only read a few books on magic. But I know that my affinities are light and wind. And water," I added, remembering the new affinity I gained.
"Let's test it out." Lux nodded and put a crystal ball in front of me. It was about the size of a soccer ball in my past life. "Put your hands on it and pour as much magic as you can."
Is it going to be that pattern? Where the magic measuring device will shatter at the protagonist's overwhelming power?
The ball's surface felt cool against my fingers. I concentrated on the feeling inside my body. Magic felt like a mist swirling around inside of me, and like the way I used light magic to heal Marina and the knights, I poured it out into the crystal ball.
Whitish yellow, blue, and green orbs of light swirled around inside the ball. More and more of the orbs appeared, and the light emitted from them lit the room up in sparkling colors.
"You're right, you really do have three attributes." Lux raised her eyebrows. "Really high magical power too."
The light shone brighter until the crystal ball was dazzling, then I started feeling some kind of feedback against my hands.
Is this it?! Is it coming?!
Come on come on come on-
The crystal ball shattered as Lux yelped.
KITAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Lux wiped sweat off her forehead. "I can't believe you have so much magical power alrea-why do you look so pleased with yourself?!"
"Kekekekeke." I couldn't stop snickering.
Lux sighed. "With this level of power, it's even more important that you learn to control it." She started scribbling on the blackboard. "The world is full of magical power, or as we like to call it, magia." She drew a vague outline of a human and made arrows towards it. "Humans and some monsters are able to absorb raw magia from the environment. But raw magia can't be used, and is automatically converted into the six attributes depending on the user's affinity. The rate of absorption and the maximum capacity of magia varies wildly from person to person, and in most people the levels are so low that they can't use magic at all."
I nodded along as I wrote in my notebook.
Lux paused to see if I had any questions before continuing. "When you push out your magic without any orders, it takes on the most basic form of that attribute." She drew a splash of water coming out of the human figure. "A simple burst of wind, a stream of water, a ball of fire, a clump of dirt. Light's most basic form is to help the body heal itself, and dark's most basic form is to accelerate decay."
So far it lined up with my experiences. "What about things like making a whirlwind around yourself?"
"You have to have a strong imagination, and be able to order the magic to perform in sequence." Lux drew a diagram on the board:
[Release wind -> Turn at a distance in front of you -> Continue in a circle]
"So they're basically programs," I muttered.
"Programs?" Lux raised an eyebrow.
I quickly shook my head. "Just something I saw in some book somewhere."
I was a jack of all trades in my past life. I dabbled in everything and was a fast learner, but I couldn't master any of them. Programming was one of the things I learned, even if it was at a basic level. I believe I had quite the aptitude for things that relied on logic and pattern recognition.
I tore out a piece of paper and crumpled it into a ball. I threw it a short distance ahead of me, then sent a burst of wind after. I made the paper ball constantly fly around in a loop in front of me.
Lux clapped. "Really impressive. I'm surprised to see a kid be able to do that."
Sorry, I'm not entirely a kid.
"But." Lux plucked the paper ball out of the air. "Even if you can order the right sequence, your control is wobbly. You're leaking magia everywhere."
I raised an eyebrow. I didn't notice anything like that at all. "How do I learn better control?"
Lux took out another crystal ball. This one was smaller, and had streaks of colored glows winding around inside it in various patterns. A small glass bead rolled around inside the ball. "With this, you want to pour in as little magic as possible, but order it to go in exactly the right direction."
As she touched her finger to it, a small streak of red flew into the ball. Fire magic? The streak of red picked up the bead and slowly guided it along one of the patterns. She handed it over to me.
I held it in my hands, and injected a bit of magic into it. Instead of Lux's graceful streak of red, a chaotic jumble of lights burst inside and bounced in unpredictable directions. The glass bead flew around and smashed against the wall of the crystal ball repeatedly. I grimaced.
"See?" asked Lux.
"Yeah..."
"Your first assignment is to be able to keep the glass bead floating still."
In the end, I couldn't get the glass bead to calm down at all in the time that Lux was scheduled to teach me. I thanked her for the lesson and left the department feeling down. I was determined to be able to calm the bead down before my next lesson.
