“Karin-” I heard a high-pitched voice call out to me. Knowing very well who it was, I decided to keep walking, occasionally glancing backwards to check on who was behind me.
‘The woods aren’t that big of a place, I think she is capable of catching up.’ I thought to myself, sliding over a rock and dodging branches. The leaves on the ground were still moist from the rain storm last night. hopping over rocks, sliding under branches, and dodging a few animals, I finally arrived at the cave.
‘This cave is said to be haunted by a large and dark creature. The townspeople didn’t think I was brave enough to go alone, I will be proving them wrong. The only thing I have left to do is go inside‘
Looking inside the pitch-black cave, I shuddered, Weird vibes were being emitted from the inside, like waves of dark energy. Shaking my head quickly, I took a step forward and before I could go any further, I found myself being hauled away from the odd-looking entrance.
“Karin, I told you to wait! what do you think you’re doing?” my best friend Aoi scolded. She placed her small hands, roughed up by playing with knives, on my shoulders and looked me over, worry and pain evident on her face. “Thank the goddesses that you aren’t hurt, Karin… The woods are a dangerous place- especially that cave! What are you thinking?”
Aoi is a kind and cute girl, she has short brown hair and golden eyes. she wears a dark olive green dress, a traditional look that she adjusted to fit her personally and body type. She also carries a snake dagger that the tribe Elder bestowed upon her, a sacred treasure. While she is skinny, but the way she carries herself is much different then the other girls in our village.
I frowned and looked up at her. “You know I have to do this… The townspeople think I'm a joke! You don't have to try and fit in like this… How could you understand?” I mumbled, brushing her hands away and turning towards the cave. “-And why do you care so much, Aoi?”
She glared at the back of my head and crossed her arms, Typical of Aoi. “Did we not already discuss this, Karin? I told you time and time again, it is thanks to Nana that you were born in to our household. So of course I'm going to treat you like a brother… Now, lets' go back home. Besides, the things said about this cave are just myths. A cloaking spell is put around it, which makes any living thing fear the cave.” She attempted and tried to grab my hand, but I just pushed it away as I had done before. Seeing a small gleam inside the cave which had caught my attention, I was not ready to go back home, not yet.
“Aoi, did you see that…?” I questioned pointing and keeping my eyes fixated on the entrance, in case it would appear again. It had to appear again, it felt like a signal ushering me inside.
“See what Karin?” she sighed, walking beside me and freezing on the spot once she saw the glimmer from the within the cave. “We have to go… Karin.” She backed up but I couldn’t help my curiosity. I glanced pack at her for a second and quickly dashed right in. I could hear Aoi yelp in surprise and run after me. “Karin!” I heard her shout, hoping I would stop but I couldn't. I had to see what caused that small light from before, I just had to!
“Come on, it’s this way!” I called back to her, not stopping for a second as I made my way towards the small gleam. My feet were moving on their own at this point, and my eyes scanned the long corridor in the darkness. A trait I think I have inherited from my mother.
I kept running until eventually a small clearing had appeared in front of us. The bright lights blinded me for a second but once my eyes had adjusted I could only stare in awe. Disbelieve and amazement clear on my face. This had to be the most beautiful place that I have had the pleasure to see in my life. Who knew a place like this existed in a dark and gloomy cave?
The cave was an opening which allowed light to flow in to the cave and lighten the atmosphere. The bright sun reflected perfectly over a small pond, which was conveniently on the center of the cold and secluded cave. Large vines and beautiful flowers adorned the walls and floor, making the place look surreal, almost picture-book worthy. Small creatures floated and danced around the pond in such melodic way, adding to all of the surrealness. It seemed as though this cave had not met the uncruel world that surrounded it.
“Fairies… What are fairies doing in this kind of place?” Aoi whispered, amazed at the sight. She attempted to regain her breath and take in the beauty of the place, which made her seem a bit quite out of shape.
As soon as we got in to the clearing, the fairies attention were diverted on to us. Which seemed to cause a bit of chaos, while some disappeared, the rest looked at Aoi and me with curiosity. It was obvious that they didn’t get to see elves too often. One of them, seeming a bit more experienced and confident, came up to me and took the form of an elf child.
“You are the offspring of that woman… aren’t you?” she questioned, tilting her head to the side and looking up at me expectantly, her hair falling gracefully and a knowledgeable aura surrounding her.
The eyes of that ‘child’ seemed to hold all the answers of the galaxy… Those big round eyes, that saw things I had yet to see and felt emotions so foreign to me. I was curious, did this fairie know something about my mother?
