The next thing I remember was waking up to a warm bed. I sat up and my head spun a little so I quickly threw a hand down to stabilize myself.
"Oof!" I whipped my head to look at what I'd hit and pulled my hand back. That Jay kid from last night sat up. He was in my bed. "Geez that was a violent wake up call." He stood up and walked over to the window. I was panicking, he was in only a pair of boxers. Then light flooded in as he quickly drew the curtains back and the sudden change hurt my eyes. It hit me even harder as my hangover made my head throb and I flipped myself back onto the bed to hide my face in a pillow and let out a very unpleasant groan. "Revenge. Feel free to hang out in here for a while. I'll get you some water and make some breakfast."
"No, why would you? Just get out. This is why I told you to leave last night. Jesus, I'm dead. I knew Eric was wrong but my dumbass chose to have hope. Now look at me." I was ready to start crying.
"Why would I what? Are you okay?" He sat on the bed next to me and when he reached out to rub my back I flinched. "Whoa, okay, seriously what's up?"
"My life is over I just want to die."
"Your hangover can't be that bad."
"Do you not understand the severity of what we did? I was drunk. I'll have no defense. They'll send me to prison. I'll die there. I deserve it."
"Oh. Wait. No I'm still a little confused."
"I SLEPT WITH A MINOR!" I screamed into the pillow and regretted it quickly as my head pounded harder.
The kid laughed and I looked up at him in shock. "Do you think this is funny?"
"A little." He stood up and gestured to the floor. I looked and saw a pillow and a few blankets kind of scattered. "We 'slept' together sure but we didn't have sex. I was sleeping on the floor when your drunk ass complained about being too cold and basically dragged me into the bed. Also," He crossed his arms and tried to look angry, but it looked a bit more like a pout. "I am not a minor. I'm 18."
"Okay so why are you half naked?"
"I get really hot when I sleep. It actually helped me sleep a lot better when I was with you. You're like an ice box. Are you sure you have healthy circulation, maybe you should get that checked out."
"I'm fine, but can you still leave? I've really got a lot to get done."
"Good, I can make you food while you work. You've got to eat properly. And I can be your gopher if you need anything. I won't bother you much. Just as long as you let me ask you questions every now and then." He had a large smile on his face.
"Why are you so damn pushy?"
"Isn't it normal for me to want to get to know you better?"
"Why?"
"We're soulmates right?" He showed me his arm where it clearly had exactly what I said yesterday written.
"Great, I forgot. All the more reason for you to leave."
"What? But I want to take care of you. I've been looking forward to this for like 6 years."
"Yeah, well I want nothing to do with you."
"Why? What the hell is your problem?" He now seemed rather irritated.
I was ready to match that attitude. "Do you remember what you said to me yesterday?"
"Umm." He looked a little confused. "That you're perfect?"
I pulled up my sleeve revealing my words. "You called me an old man! It's on my fucking hand. I used to work at a daycare you know. It was my dream job. Then these fucking words showed up on my hand and everyone thought I was some kind of pervert. I lost my job because of you! So no, I don't want anything to do with you. You ruined my life."
He started to quickly gather his clothes and get dressed. "Look I'm sorry that that happened to you, but it isn't really my fault. Fate put those words on you long before we met. And you're hair is so light you looked like a grandpa so my bad."
"I can't even see my family anymore because of these!"
"That's not my fault! Look I'm sorry that you lost your job. I'm sorry that you can't see your family. I'm so sorry for everything that's happened, but I'm not sorry for who I am so I really can't help what I said." He was completely dressed and ready to storm out my bedroom door when he turned around to address me again. "If you want to talk or feel like apologizing then I'll be at the cafe from yesterday. Feel free to fix your world view first." He slammed my door. I heard some voices outside. They were pretty muffled but I could still make them out.
"Who the hell are you?" The kid's anger still think in his voice.
"I think I should be asking you that?" That was definitely Eric and he was understandably confused.
"Whatever it doesn't matter. Excuse me." I heard the front door slam as well. Then Eric opened my bedroom door.
"What the hell is going on? Who was that?"
"My fucking soulmate." I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose in frustration. "Look I don't really care I've got a lot of work to do for this event."
"That's actually why I'm here. There have been some changes."
"Great like what?"
"Well some other researchers decided that it wouldn't be ethical to start trying this without the soulmate's consent."
"So I'm gonna need his fucking permission!?"
"Yup, why don't we go discuss some of the changes over coffee."
"Sure, I know a place."
Fuck me.
