Szczodre Gody (or Коляда/Kolyada) is a pre-Christian Slavic winter festival. During Szczodre Gody Slavs not only celebrated the return of the Sun (after the longest night of the year the days start to become longer), but also invited to their households the souls of their ancestors and honoured them with a feast.
Many of the rituals of Szczodre Gody were incorporated into the Christian traditions and are practiced to this day. Laying additional plates at the dinner table is one of them.
Slava!
