Kita brushed his hands over to top of his hair and looked at himself in the door's reflection. Did he have something on his face? Did he forget to fix something? He turned to the god and asked, “what? What are you looking at?”
“You,” was all he replied.
“Yes, but why?” Kita's heart had kicked up a notch and he was practically humming with nervous energy.
Fate tilted his head and continued to stare. He stared at the fox like a predator does his prey and it made Kita want to run and hide. The elevator came to a stop, the doors opened, and the fox rushed into the small square room that acted as a landing before the penthouse door. Fate sauntered out behind him.
The fox opened the front door and stumbled up the single step that lead to the living area. He berated himself for how clumsy and inelegant he always seemed to be in front of Fate. The god closed the door after following Kita inside. He turned the deadbolt with a click. The sound seemed to carom through Kita, and he inhaled sharply.
“P-please have a seat,” he waved towards the white couch. Well, it was more of a fainting couch than a true couch. It had no back and only one side curled over itself making an armrest. It was the only place to sit in the living area unless you wanted to sit on the floor or on one of the giant blue furry throw pillows that graced a place near the hearth.
Other than the couch and pillows, the only items in the area were a large blue and white rug, covering most of the wood floor in this part of his home, and a coffee table that sat at a strategic distance from the couch. Kita hadn't planned on sitting in the living area unless he had company, but Fate wasn't the kind of company that the fox had been thinking of when he'd planned this particular space, or any place inside his open concept penthouse.
Fate looked at the area and raised his eyebrow before giving Kita a look. What look was that? Kita wasn't sure he wanted to know. It was almost as if two different emotions were warring over the god's face, but neither one could win and settle victoriously in place.
Kita blushed and cleared his throat, “I'll go get us something to drink.” He moved with slightly more grace as he past the breakfast bar and into the kitchen. He groaned to himself as he realized he didn't have anything to offer except water or wine. It was his first day in the city, his groceries wouldn't be delivered until tomorrow.
He grabbed a couple of wine glasses and his best bottle of Silver label wine. Silver wine was some of the highest quality wine made for the upper echelon of Yokai. Kita had been saving this particular bottle for a few hundred years.
He twisted the cork out of the bottle with a tiny bit of magic, then poured some into the glasses. He was about to cork the bottle but changed his mind. If he was going to host a god in his home, he was going to need a little more fortification than a single glass of wine, even if it was five times as potent as human wine.
