Eliza:
I slowly woke up. The room bright from all the light coming in from the window. It gently lulled me awake along with the soft bedding under me.
Wait what?
I sat up seeing that I was sleeping in Minho’s bed. I froze my face turning bright red. I tried to think of why I was in his bed and then I remembered all that had happened last night. I couldn’t believe that, that had actually happened. I couldn’t believe myself. Why had I done what I did that night? I told him all about my memory and then I slept with him. I put my head in my hands my face turning even reader at the thought that I slept in the same bed as him. What had I done?
“Eliza! Are you awake?” a voice called from the other side of the door. I recognized the voice as Newts, “You start working today, in the kitchen.”
“I’m up Newt! Thank you I had almost forgotten!” I called out to him. I lifted my head out of my hands and looked at the door.
I truly did forget that I was doing that today. I looked out the window seeing how bright it was getting. I knew that there were going to be a lot of people heading to the kitchen soon. If I was going to work there I needed to leave now so that I could show them all that I was able to help and show that I truly did deserve to be there. I deserved to have them help me and for me to help them.
I got to the kitchen and walked in. Frypan was already up making a ton of food. There were plates full of bacon and eggs all ready for someone to pick it up and devour the food on the plate.
“Hey Frypan.” I said as I shut the door behind me. He turned and looked at me a smile growing on his face.
“Hello Eliza. Are you ready for your first day?”
“Yes, I’m excited about doing this.”
“Okay well we are having bacon, eggs, and pancakes. Do you know how to make pancakes?”
“I think. Is the batter ready or do I have to make it?”
“I already made the batter just have to cook it all up and make the pancakes.”
“Okay I can do that.” I looked at all the pots looking for the batter. At the very end of the line of pans and pots I saw the bowl of pancake batter.
I walked down to it turning on the heat and sprayed the pan with some oil into the pan. Once it was hot enough I scooped some of the pancake batter into the pan and let it cook. I watched as the batter rose up a little and bubbled up. I used a spatula to see if the batter was cooked before I flipped it over. I let the other side cook for a little bit before I placed it on the plate next to me.
I scooped some more the batter into the pan and than started the another pan warming up so I could make more than one at a time.
I spent the whole time in the kitchen making the pancakes and flipping them onto the plate. Frypan would take some of them and put them on the plates handing them out the window and to the gladers. They all thanked us and took the food to a table sitting down to eat. Once everyone had gotten their food Frypan and I made ourselves something and then we cleaned up the kitchen. I washed the dishes as Frypan put all of the food and things where they went since I didn’t know yet.
When all the dishes and food were put away we left the kitchen. I headed off to homestead trying to find Newt and see what Alby had said about me being a runner. So far I was having a hard time finding him so I was hoping that he was at the homestead.
Just as I hoped right when I got there I saw him walking about of the building and heading off.
I ran to caught up with him before he disappeared. I caught up to him and tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. He turned and looked at me his face brightening up a little.
“Eliza, just the person I was looking for.”
“Why were you looking for me?”
“I didn’t have time to tell you this morning, but Alby said that you could be a runner. He was just as amazed as I was when you told me you wanted to be a runner but he said that he had no issue with you being a runner.” I knew my face light up as I smiled at him.
“Really! When can I start?”
“Well considering how its only the morning I would have to saw tomorrow.”
“Hey saying it like that makes it seem like I could start today. That's not fair.” I said my face turning into a frown as I looked at him. He only started laughing.
“Okay well until then I would saw find something to do. I don’t really know what you want to do but until lunch and dinner you should find something to do. Sorry I can’t help more but I don’t have anything for you to do and I really don’t have anything to do either. I’ll see you later Eliza.”
He walked off leaving me standing there with nothing to do.
I don’t know how long I was actually standing there but by the time I moved there was nobody around me. I was standing alone in the field. I walked over to the med-jacks to see if they needed any help with anything. I got there and opened the door but there was no one there. I looked around a little but didn’t find anyone. After a while of searching I gave up. I couldn’t find anyone and obviously people were busy doing something, either that or they didn’t want to talk to me.
I walked to the forest or I guess they call it the deadheads. I found a nice large tree and sat with my back against it. I looked up at the sky imagining what the real world looked like. I wanted to know what the sun looked like, what the moon looked like. I couldn’t remember anything about the real world and I really hates myself for that, I wanted to know what it looked like.
As I sat there I thought about so many random things that once I got out of here I wanted to find the answers to.
Soon I felt my eyes fall and I let sleep take me. I knew it wasn’t the best place to sleep but I was so tired. I just knew that I needed the sleep.
I felt cold. Why was I so cold?
I opened my eyes being meet with dark walls and a cell door again. I felt my heart drop and my eyes widen. I was back in the place that I never wished to be. I didn’t know what was going to happen this time but I knew that it wasn’t going to be good.
I sat up looking around the cell looking for the younger me. At first I didn’t find anyone but than I spotted her. She was sitting in the corner of the cell covered in shadows. I couldn’t make out what she looked like so I would have to wait for her to move.
I think it had to have been at least an hour before there was any movement. Like last time there were footsteps outside of the cell. I stood up and looked out hoping to see someone new who would get me out of this nightmare but there was no such luck. It was the same older man with the scar in his face. I turned to see the younger me but instead of seeing the younger me there was no one. I looked back over to the corner where I was before and I was no there anymore. My eyes went wide and I looked around trying to find her.
The man must have thought the same thing because I watched as his eyes went wide and he called in the guards and had them open the door. He ran in looking around the cell frantically looking for any sign of how she had gotten out but there was nothing showing what had happened.
As they stood there I heard small footsteps. I turned and looked at the exit of the cell and noticed a shadow fall on the bars. I walked over stepping out of the cell noticing a flicker and a split second of the girl appear. It returned to being completely invisible within a second. She was outside of the cell now but I knew she hadn’t run away. Instead I noticed the cell door slowly shutting. One of the guards looked over the minute it began to move and shouted at the other two men in the cell. They all ran to the door but the girl was much faster. She shut the cell door on the three men. They all slammed into the cell door trying to open it but they were unable to.
I noticed that the girl had turned visible again.
Her hair was down to her waist much longer since the last time I saw. Her eyes a deeper yet duller emerald green. Her hands pale white and thin. I noticed how sick and weak she looked.
“Elizabeth! Open this door right now!” the older man shouted at her. “Elizabeth what do you think that you are going to do? There is nothing out there for you except death.”
She didn’t say anything and she certainly didn’t change her expression, in fact is just got stronger and more determined. Her eyes burned with determination as she turned and walked off.
She walked to the doors opening them and waking out. The hallway out of the door was nothing new . It was the same as the room. It was dark and narrow. I followed the younger me, as she traveled through the dark hallway. We walked down until we ended at a large room with lab tables and a large blue mat. She froze in the doorway looking around. I knew that she knew it too. This was the room where everything happened, this was where we were experimented on and forced to fight. This was where anything happened to us.
She shook her head and continued moving. There was a doorway to the left and a door to the right. We walked to the one on the left and opened it. There was another long hallway with a bright light on the far end of it. I didn’t know what was down there but we were going to find out. We started down the hall walking towards the bright light. It got brighter and brighter the farther that we went down. Finally after what seemed like forever we arrived at the end of the hallway. We left the hallway and into another room, but this time both of use froze on the other side of the enty.
The room was much larger than the other room. There was a giant window on the opposite side of the room, and out of the window there was nothing but light.
I walked over the window staring out of it my mouth dropping open and my growing wide. The world outside was nothing but ruin and desert. There was nothing but destroyed buildings and sand. I couldn’t believe my eyes. If this was really what the world looked like where were we that everything was so green and beautiful.
What was going on?
“Hello Elizabeth,” I recognize that voice. It was the man with the scar, “What did you expect to find?”
“I...I...I don’t...k...know” her voice came out all dry and rough.
“This is what the world looks is. It has all been destroyed. Now do you understand why there is nowhere for you to go. There is nothing out there for you.”
I turned looking out the window again. I lifted my hand placing it right in front of the window. I stared out the window wondering why we were trying so hard to get back to this world if this is what it is. There is nothing out here for us so why. Why are we working so hard to escape the maze.
“Now I want you to walk back to your cell and wait in there until the next time I get you. You are the key to us saving the world so go.”
“What...wh...what do you...mean?”
“We think we found a cure but to figure out we need you. So go back to your cell and we will continue this.”
“N...No” she stuttered out. “I...will not”
“How dare you. Fine it you wont go back I will make you.” he pulled out the remote that he used the last times. Her eyes widened but there was no fear in her eyes. She watched as he pressed the button sending electricity into her body. This time she didn’t fall to the ground in pain no she stood tall and held her hands out.
Her eyes closing as she took a deep breath in. When she opened her eyes again they had turned a bright blue and her hands surrounded by blue sparks of electricity. She smiled as she looked at the man before sending a ball of lightning flying into the man's chest. He flew back and right into the wall. I watched in amazement looking down at my hand wondering if this was really me that I was looking at.
I walked over to the man and looked down at him wondering if he was going to get back up. There was no moving from him. I realized that he was dead. He was not breathing and I made a bet that there was no heart beat either. I knew that I couldn’t check but I was certain that he was never going to be able to get up again. He was gone and he couldn’t do any more harm to me or anyone else that they dealt with.
Even though he was dead I felt bad about it. I hated how he treated me and how he acted but I don’t think that I ever wanted it to be like this.
As I looked down at him there was a sharp pain in my chest. My hand flying down to my chest as I looked down at it seeing nothing. The pain didn’t disappear in face it just grew. I feel down to my knees and turned around. The younger me was on the ground as well. Her breath all ragde and her face red and scrunched up. She held her chest and I noticed drops of blood rolling off her hand. Had I been stabbed? Was this was this feeling was?
The pain flared up and I let out a scream. It hurt so bad.
I squeezed my eyes shut pulling my body into a ball and whimpering.
