I ran out after the rest of the class, heading to my locker and checking my schedule once again.
I repeated this about six more times before school was finally over.
My mom was in front of the school entrance in her car, looking at her phone, so I walked over and knocked on the window.
She looked up at me and smiled, unlocking the door.
I hopped in.
"How was school today, sweetheart?"
She asked.
I shrugged and said;
"Same thing, really. Nothing new."
She patted my leg and started to drive off.
"So, your aunt is getting married."
I stared at her in shock.
"This is what, the fourth time?"
She nodded.
"I thought this would be a good time to go shopping for a dress for you to wear."
There was no way I was getting in another dress.
"Actually...could I maybe, I dunno. Wear a suit? Or- something with pants."
We suddenly stopped at a spotlight, and she turned to look at me.
"What do you mean?" She asked.
"I mean- I mean, this is her FOURTH time getting married, maybe I could...not wear a dress this time around."
She shook her head and turned back to the wheel.
"Even if this was the hundredth time, you'd still need to look presentable. What would I say if my daughter showed up in a suit and tie?"
I shrugged again.
"Half of our family already knows I'm gay, it wouldn't matter."
She seemed to be getting angry.
"That doesn't matter. You are a girl, and my daughter. As long as you're living under my roof, I will not see you wearing a suit."
That was the last straw.
"What if....what if I'm not a girl." I mumbled.
She turned to me again.
I looked at her right in the eye.
"What if I'm not a girl."
The car came to a complete stop, and my mom put her head in her hands, making my anxiety go off the charts.
