The priest said the vow and told Majid to say the same thing.
" By the embers, I promise to love this woman beside me and make her my world, nothing shall tear us apart" Majid says. He sounds so confidence. I guess anyone this rich and handsome would be feeling on top of the world, unlike me who is a pauper. But then, I shouldn't make myself feel so low. Even though this marriage is a sham, even though i am a man, even though i am a pauper, I should stand with confidence. I refuse to be ashamed of myself.
" now we will be proceeding to the signing. Bride and groom's parents let us come to the side for the signing". Oh no, what should I do. Signing this document would make everything official. Should I just run out of the front door? Should I remove my veil and start begging for forgiveness? No, it is too late for this. I need to finish what I have started even if everyone will hate me.
We went to the side for the signing. I was surprise to see a different lawyer from the arrange one.
Majid wrote his name and signed. I looked at his face. He did not seem that happy too. Was he forced to marry too? If so, what did he stand to gain from this marriage?
It was my turn to sign. Luckily, I know Florence's name and signature. I got really excited knowing that I could do this.
" sign here" the lawyer directed us. I quickly wrote the name and signed. Wait, I just mistakenly wrote my name 'Adrian Johnson'. I looked at the name again and it was really mine. Everything is over, now they would know I have committed a fraudulent act. I would be arrested. Majid's family are very brutal people. My life is over. I am just twenty eight years old. I don't want to go to jail.
I shifted to the corner where Majid was standing. I stood beside him. Aunt Margret and her husband went to the signing place.
" Florence, what is wrong?" Majid says, he seems to have notice how over nervous I was. I could not even reply him. My eyes were on Aunt Margret who was signing. She signed and did not say a word and went to her sit. Mr Johnson, her husband too did the same thing only that he was smiling, he was probably thinking of how much he would make from the Benjamin's company.
Why did they not notice? Even Benjamin's parent signed too without noticing. What is really going on? Wait, could it be that they are mistaken my name for Florence? Because Florence full name is Florence Adriana Johnson and my own name is Adrian Johnson. We have the same name because we are related. Florence's father is my mother's brother. Though they have never been on good term and I don't even know why. My mother never got married so my surname is my grandfather name.
" it is time to raise the veil and kiss the bride" the priest announced. I could not move. I had forgotten that the veil will be raise.
" can the bride and the groom step forward" the priest said. Majid held out his hands for me to take but all I could do was look at his hands. Tears began to drop on my cheek.
I manage to take his hand and we walk to the centre of the hall. Every eyes were on us.
" yes, raise it up and give her a smashing kiss" one of majid's friend was saying. If only they knew that I am a man and not a woman. All hell would break loose. I could see Majid lifting his hand to take off my veil but instantly I held my veil and refuse to let him raise it.
" oh, she's shy" someone was saying.
" let us see your beautiful face" another said but still I held it tight. I knew what I was doing was childish but I just can't help myself.
" Florence, what is the matter let me see your face?" Majid said to me. I could really pretend to be Florence since we really look alike but they would know because we do not have the same eye colour, my eyes colour is dark blue while Florence own was lighter. And secondly I had earlier discarded the wig Florence had given to me because it was making me uncomfortable. But still I need to let go of this veil and face this problem once and for all.
I removed my hands and Majid raise the veil. I know I am dead. But I did not expect what I heard him say.
" huh? high way boy " I think I saw him smirking.
