The Light of Life

Chapter XIV

Chapter XIV

Feb 28, 2019

The vibrant jungle was replaced by a suffocating and obscure atmosphere, the bright sky gave way to a cloudy and dusty one, while the wet breeze of the waterfall turned into a hot, earthy air. Both looked around and what they saw seemed like a bad dream.

–Where are we? –Msi’ asked stunned.

Daniel barely tried to organize the ideas in his mind, when a tremor on the ground shook them, from the earth, a gigantic worm appeared, throwing itself over them with its sharp teeth turning like saws, Dan pushed the girl away as he pulled his gun from his belt. The immense animal was just above him and it fell down at the same time as he fired. A rumble shook the place as some lightings cross the insect's head, and then, total silence.

–Dani! –Msi’ screamed terrified to see no movement.

Then the huge body of the worm fell to one side, revealing the figure of the man, leaning and with the weapon pointing upwards, breathing restlessly.

–Daniel!

The girl ran to where he was and hugged him euphorically.

–This job is going to kill me.

After, they both began to think about the situation.

–What happened?

–I think you opened a portal to another planet –He said looking at the worm's corps.

–A portal, what is that?

–When the light leaves my planet, it doesn’t move from one place to another, on a common trip, but creates a portal. At an exact point of space opens a gap that allows it to go from side to side in a matter of seconds.

–I do not understand.

–Amm, imagine that to go from the house to the river, you only had to open the door, it is something like this. The truth I don’t understand it at all, but I suppose if the light can do it, you too. I don’t know where we are and we should find out.

She nodded, still confused. Daniel shook the dust from his clothes and gave the girl the hand to start walking.

–Let’s go muult kekoo.

–But, where will we go?

–The most important thing to survive in an unknown place is to find water and shelter. I might think there is nothing in this place, but if there is more life than just us, then there must be water also, we have to find it.

–All right.

They both started walking thru the thick haze of dust that cut their view off. Msi’ blindly trusted her companion, but she had never been away from home, so she got tired quickly. The heat was very different, while in the jungle it was humid, in that place was dry, the sun seemed to pinch them with hundreds of small thorns in their skin, the air was dense and unbreathable as if they had run for a long time, besides, the wind gusts loaded with sand, pushed and hit them on the face and arms. The girl could barely look, so she clung tightly to Dan's arm, struggling to walk.

The minutes turned into hours and the young man became more and more worried. He knew what would happen if they didn’t locate water soon and the memories of his mission in the desert didn’t leave him alone. Both were exhausted and soon Msi’ fell down tired.

–I can't anymore.

Dan leaned in front of her, trying to cheer her up.

–Do you remember when you were ten and I carried you over my back when you got tired or slept on our excursions?

–Aha

–Well, I can't do that anymore, now I need you to help me, don’t forget that there are only two options, to die here or to find a way out.

He offered her his hand and she took it up. Thus, he succeeded in making her continue. But the hours passed and his anguish increased.

A while later, the blurred shadows of what seem to be stone towers appeared on the horizon. That didn’t encourage the boys much, but Dan didn’t give up easily. The afternoon had fallen and the sun was about to be hidden, when the wind calmed, little by little the brume was disappearing and the towers in the distance began to change of appearance. They both paused for a moment, then a strange feeling, like a déjà vu, struck the young man. It was like looking out of his apartment window every day. There, in the distance, he could recognize buildings identical to those of his world, rising majestically in the middle of the desert.
