Daniel defined himself as a capable man, simply capable. In all his long years of life he had encountered hundreds of difficulties, but in one way or another he had overcome them. Intelligent and obedient, he was regarded as one of the best warriors that existed. For this reason he was the first option for what the chancellor Derian called the greatest mission of the century.
Daniel had no idea what was exactly what this mission would demand of him, but he was also very patient, so he didn’t worry as he was taken by a couple of guards to the chancellor's office, looking at the extravagant elevator carpet of brown colors and twisted and repetitive figures in the door; to the sides, due to the transparent walls, could be observed the big city full of high buildings, pipes for the oxygen, tracks for the meters and tubulars for the automatic vehicles that filled the roads, there was no place to walk and therefore there were no visible people, everything moved through the sky, and it was even possible to look at the dense steam generated by the machineries in the lower part of the place, it was a world full of lights, made upwards.
The elevator went up two hundred floors, marking each number from the ground floor to the pen house. Finally, the doors opened into a long corridor with a beautiful carved wooden door. Daniel couldn’t help putting a face of surprise at such a wonderful luxury, he had only had occasion to see something like this in the homes of the great rich or influential politicians. The guards called the chancellor respectfully and an employee opened the door. She was small and thin with straight black hair, she looked with a big smile at the young man, a smile that faded into a face of complete stupefaction when she looked how tall he was.
–Madison, don’t stand there and let them in! –Derian shrieked as he got up from his chair to greet the captain.
Daniel was an uncommon man, he had black eyes and hair and despite being thin he was rather stout, but his biggest feature was his height, six ft, without boots. In their world, the tallest beings were rarely five ft, so men like Dan no doubt drew attention. Although the only thing clear to him was that he always had to bend down to look at the others, so he wasn’t surprised to note that the chancellor was really short.
–Captain Daniel Landon –He said proudly.
–Mr.
–You survived alone in the desert for three years, it's truly amazing.
–With all due respect, sir, I wasn’t alone all the time.
–No, but you came out alive –Those words made him throb in the chest–. That's why you're the one for this mission –The man gestured with a strange smile–. Follow me.
Together they returned to the elevator and for the second time Daniel watched how the numbers changed on the dial, but this time the device didn't stop on reaching the ground floor, or the basement, it kept going down for what Dan calculated at least others twenty floors, passing by the steam of the low zone and sinking in the complete obscurity of the old subway. When the doors opened, the men found a white vault with large windows, where as they approached, could see a huge golden orb in the middle of a gigantic control room of several floors down, full of computers and people moving from one side to another.
–Welcome to the Research Center “LIFE”
Dan open–mouthed, immediately recognized what they were seeing, despite being the first time he did.
–It's the light of life –He said, completely surprised.
–That's right –Derian said in fascination–. The source of life of everything we know.
–Is awesome.
–True, but it's in great danger –Daniel turned to the chancellor, attentive to his words. –You'll see Landon, light is an entity that gives life, causes water to sprout, vegetation emerges and animals evolve, it provides us with the necessary resources to exist, but it isn’t eternal. Every certain number of years must be born again, recreate and purify itself, but for this, it must leave the planet.
–I understand.
–If that happens all our world will die, but not immediately, its energy will remain for a few years, that will give us time to track it down and bring it back.
–So that's what you want me to do?
–Can you do it?
Daniel looked at the man and then at the bright light that blinked in front of him and smiled decisively.
–Of course.
Derian led the young man to one of the viewing platforms where Miguel, the lab's boss, explained him the basics.
–Good evening, captain Landon, it's my pleasure.
–Goodnight.
–Well, as you have noticed the light blinks incessantly, that means that its time here, has run out, at a certain time when the levels of energy be very low, the light will leave the planet. We can track it, know where it goes and send you to look for it, however the trip won’t be easy, will be several years of crossing and once you reach the place where the light lands, you will have the task of finding it and putting it in this container –The man put a small metal sphere, no bigger than his hand in front of him.
–Will the light fit here?
–Yeah, yeah, at this moment it looks really big, but the trip consumes a lot of power, in addition when it arrive at its new location, a dead planet, will release its energy and start to give life. So it is likely that you will encounter a hostile environment, but don’t worry, we'll give you the necessary equipment to survive.
The head of the laboratory continued giving details of the journey, but Daniel's mind had begun to ramble, looking at the immense power that radiated from the light feeling how it joined to the beating of his heart.
