Note from the artist:
"This comic was inspired by my life in Alaska. The tattoo markings on the old ladies and the mask mean "woman" and are added upon as they pass through each milestone in life. The masks, and the process on how they make masks are how they're made today. The specific mask that is given, is one that is to mimic another human. When someone in the family does something brave (or incredibly stupid) they make masks of them to tell their story around the campfire. This is especially done in Yu'pik culture. My mother-in-law is Yu'pik, my wife is Tlinglet, and I am Athabaskan. To burn or destroy one of these masks is paramount to murder, as it feels as if a soul resides in it."
