Thursday passed quicker than I expected. I went to see the coach-whos name I have still yet to learn-and gave him my physical records. The rest of the day was spent trying not to fall asleep in class and working on my project with Tiff, which was basically just us going on petsmarts website and cataloging all the foods.
Before I knew it, Friday came and with that the fear of finding out whether or not I got on the team. I get to school a little later than usual so before I can go check and see if I got on the team-not that I even know where to check-the bell rings.
I walk into my math class and go sit by Darrian.
"Hey" I sit down next to him and pull out my notebook for this class and he turns toward me.
"Good Mornin'" I don't know, it could be a really good or a really bad one. It all depended on whether or not fate has worked in my favor. Not that fate had anything to do with it, but I was pretty shit. So it'd be a miracle if I got on the team.
"So how's your day been?" I ask
"I mean, nothing much has happened."
"Riiight" I turn back in my seat, facing the front of the classroom before I could impress him further with my amazing conversational skills.
"Hey," I turn towards him," Me and my friends are going-"
"-lright class, today we're going to talk about- " Darrian didn't get to finish before Ms. Troth started the lesson for today. I spaced out for the next ten minutes before Darrian leans over and whispers,
"What I was saying before, me and my friends are going to this party type thing and I was wondering if you'd like to join us?" I leaned back, taken by his offer.
"Umm, I don't know. Where is it?" I ask, leaning toward him to hear his answer better.
"I actually don't know, but I could find out for you."
"You know, I think I'm good."
"Oh okay," he leans back pouting. Before I could say something to make him feel better but Ms. Troth interrupts, once again, she does that a lot.
"Alright, here's your quiz, you have till the end of class to finish" I spend the rest of class staring down at my paper and wondering why on earth I thought taking statistics was a good Idea.
With about ten minutes left to end of class, I decided to write whatever sounded like what I assume it should look like before turning it in. I walk back to my seat and pack my bag, and put I earbuds in, to avoid further conversation.
The bell rings and I start to walk to my next class when something rams into me from behind. I stumble a few feet before finding my footing and turn around to see what hit me.
It was Tiff was smiling ear to ear. She started talking so I pull my earbuds out, "What?"
"Did you see it?" She practically screamed, vibrating with excitement.
"See what?"
"The list, " She starts walking, and I skip to catch up," You know, of all the girls who made the team."
"Oooh," I nod my head, "No, I haven't seen it. Didn't have enough time this morning. Did you make the team?"
Tiff nods, "Yes, yes I did. You know who else did?"
I shake my head. She pushes me by the shoulder, "You, dumbass"
I jaw drops, "Really?" I ask, with an almost disbelieving tone, "Wow, that's awesome"
"Yeah, so the soccer team is going to celebrate everyone who made J.V. and Varsity at my friend's house. And you know, now that you're part of the team, you should come." She wraps her arm around my shoulder, "So whaddya say?"
Wow! Two offers in one day. This is so unexpected. I feel so popular.
"When is it?"
"This Saturday," I think about it for a moment. We get to Tiff class, "Listen, just think about and text me if you want to go. You can come over to my house and we can get ready together."
I nod, "Yeah okay"
"And listen, I need you to tell me before tomorrow afternoon okay?"
"Okay"
"I'll see you later."
I spend the next hour learning about the Necessary and Proper Clause, which is by far more boring than anything I've learned in my entire school career.
Besides, it didn't help that half my attention was on Tiff and the party offer. It sounded like an amazing opportunity. I mean, there really isn't anything that could go wrong if I went, at least nothing I could think of.
Yeah, why am I trying to find things wrong with going out with Tiff and the team?
Before I could psych myself out I grab my phone and text Tiff.
Outgoing message: To Tiff
Hey I'll go to the party on Saturday
I get a response almost immediately after
Incoming message: From Tiff
Dope 💓
Incoming message: From Tiff
Bring a change of clothes so you can spend the night after the party
Incoming message: From Tiff
And come over early so we can get ready. Lk 5ish
I texted back an okay. I spent the rest of the class texting Tiff an okay before going back to taking the rest of the notes. When the bell finally rings I pick up my stuff and head out to the parking lot.
I pull up to a stop light and realize that I said yes to spending the night at Tiffs house without talking to my mom first. "Shit."
I pull into the driveway and -it seems fate loves to fuck with me- my mom's car is parked in the driveway. Looks like today is one of the very rare occasions that shes actually home for lunch.
I walk inside and head toward the kitchen, "Hey mom"
She looks up from her laptop and regards me with a smile, "Hey hon, how was school today?"
"It was good" I frowned, "What are you doing home so early?" I was hoping I could text her about Tiff's party over the phone. That way she wouldn't be able to ask me a bunch of questions I don't know the answer to.
Mom goes back to typing on her laptop, "Oh they really didn't need me in the office today, any work that needs to be done I can do from home."
I walked over to the fridge and grabbed water, twisting the cap off I ask, "So is this gonna be a normal occurrence or?"
She looks up and gives me a sympathetic look, she thinks I'm asking cause I miss her. Which was true, but now that for the first time I have a social life, I don't really want her to be around if I do stuff.
I wonder if that makes me a bad daughter.
"I don't know, well have to wait and see how things are going at work."
I nod, "Okay, so it's cool if I spend the night at my friend's on Saturday right? I'll be back Sunday morning."
Mom frowns, " I have this weekend off, I don't know when this will happen again."
"Well I'll be here for most of tomorrow, I wouldn't be going over to Tiff's until Five at the earliest."
Mom goes back to work on her laptop, "And where does this Tiffany live?" And with that came the onslaught of questions I had no capability of answering truthfully. But after a good bit of convincing(with a few white lies sprinkled in), I was finally able to convince her to let me go.
I walk over and give her a hug, "Thanks mom, love you." And with that, I go upstairs and make plans with Tiff, and I did figure out where she lived eventually. And with everything set up, I went to bed with little to no worries for the say ahead. And a little bit of excitement.
