The Mind Of A Young Warrior (Book 1) /Preview/

Chapter 1: Misery

Chapter 1: Misery

Mar 14, 2019

The cold of early Autumn reigns on the Westside of Saxon land, Wessex. What was once a calm and quiet place that was protected by three heroes is now but a cruel wasteland. A dangerous illness is plagued throughout the lands, known as The Plague of Bravery's Wrath. Brought down upon the strict God himself. The illness was meant to rotten away the ones who have lost the will to fight and lose their sense of bravery. If those who lose faith in him, he'll lose faith in you. It was a rare illness especially for a free planet like Athena. But when King Hengist and the rest of the Tyrant Knight damned their land and people. Everyone gave up on hope and faded away from their brave souls. Not having any will to fight. But with all these disasters plaguing the Saxon people, why did they continue to live there? The little boy knew the lands he lived upon was dying, but he chose to stay. Everyone has reasons to stay on the wasteland, but what was his reasoning? His reason for staying was to protect and care for his dying mother that had The Plague of Bravery's Wrath. That was the only reason why he still lives on the harsh lands of Saxons. Though, that reason will soon be taken away from him. The young, mightly and foolish warrior was now laying away from her bedside. Sasena is aware that death will soon come to her. Once someone has this cruel illness there is no recovery. She thought about the cause of her illness. She was afraid of her husband. She did nothing to protect the person she loved the most from his wrath; that resulted in his precious life to end. All that she had left of her former lover was his son. Her beloved it, Marcelo. But yet again, she failed to protect him as well by her husband. She has given up. She has lost her bravery to fight back. She was repeating the same mistakes again and again. She simply lost control. She deserves this harsh punishment that plagues her.

The candle flickers on the wooden nightstand back and forth from the cold air of Autumn. The small room was made of stones and sticks, with only a single open window with no glass. There was an old wooden bed at the center of the room next to the nightstand. A young boy enters the room, shutting the wooden door behind him. In his hands, he was carrying a bowl of warm soup. The young boy pulls out a chair and places it next to the bed, where his dying mother lays. The boy sits down and mumbles to himself.

"You know why you can't do that, Marcelo.” The woman spoke in a raspy voice.

Marcelo leans closer to his dying mother, gripping the bowl in his hands, angrily.

"Why?!” He exclaimed, "You need to eat!"

"There is no point in feeding me if I'm dying, my son. Eat. You haven't eaten in days because of that horrible man. I want you to keep your strength up. I-" She pleaded him until she moans quietly in pain; trying to hide it from her son. A twinge of pain erupted her chest. She grabs the bed sheets tightly as she proceeded to cough violently. Her body trembles by every breath she took.

"Mom!" Marcelo gasped. He places the bowl of soup on the nightstand quickly and grabbed his mother firmly on her shoulders. He tightly held her hand on his. His heart beat fast from the sudden episode.

"Stop saying that! You are not dead! You'll survive and you're going to be alright... Y-You'll be fine... I promise." He whimpers. A tear roll down his clear yellow eyes as he stared at his dying mother.

What was once a long and curly blue hair woman with matching eyes and smooth pale skin, now had a short and messy white hair with bloodshot red eyes and her skin rots away. Seeing his mother change so drastically makes him feel so helpless to see such a beautiful woman is dying before his eyes. With this helpless state, he positions Sasena in a comfortable position, desperately trying to calm her illness.

"M-Marcelo, don't make promises... that you can't keep..." She tries to speak. She breathes in and out heavily. She couldn't take the pain anymore. She was hurting so much.

"Mom..." He cried softly.

Sasena smiled happily at him. She places her hand on his cheek, stroking it with her thumb.

"Marcelo, we only had a short time together. 12 years feels like a minute pass by. But with my beating heart running fast. A minute can feel like an eternity." She said, happily.

"W-What are you talking about?" Marcelo hesitated. He didn't understand what was happening nor what his mother meant.

"In a short time, you have given me an eternity, my child... You know that I'm dying and there is no cure for the Bravery's Wrath." She stated to him.

"Please, Marcelo. Make the pain go away. I want things to end like this. Being with you as I die by your hands." She begged him.

He shakes his head rapidly, denying the request. He moves closer to his mother; embracing her. His tears came flooding down as he whimpers and sobs on her shoulder.

"No! No! I can't do that! Y-You're the only person I have left." He yelled out.

"You"ll find someone else to love you, Marcelo. You are so strong. You can do anything you want." She said, pulling away from him.

"But I'm little. I don't know anything. I-I need you, Mom." He denied her again.

"Being little doesn't change anything, Marcelo. Ever since you were born, I was always in pain long before I got this illness. You were my only hope, but seeing you like this. The way he treats you. The way I did nothing to protect you. It hurts me so much. I'm the worst mother anyone could have. I just want it to be over now. Please, make the pain go away. You're the only person who can give me back my freedom again." She begged him once more.

She puts her hand on either side of his head and puts her forehead on his. Marcelo cries softly to prevent anyone from hearing them. She lets a single tear fall down her face but quickly wipes it away. She pulls away from him and stares straight into his eyes. There was a silence in the air as Marcelo thought about his mother request. He knew that being in his state is not worth suffering over if you knew you were going to die. But his reason for staying, for still living he will have no more. It will be selfish of him if he continues to let his mother suffer. He has no choice but to comply.

"I'll... I'll do it, mom..." He looks down at her sadly. He felt like his whole world collapsing but he had to do it. He can't stand seeing his mother in this state any longer. He has to do what needs to be done. He embraced her one last time.

"I love you, mom." He wept.

"I love you too, Marcelo." She concludes. Marcelo could feel the cold air blowing out from the window. The wind blows out the candle and there he lays in darkness with his mother. Embracing her, loving her til' the end.

"Warriors are not born and they are not made... Warriors create themselves through trial and error, pain and suffering, and their ability to conquer their own faults." - Philip J. Messina

Death, pride, and hunger lay on the Saxon lands on the planet Anehta. Violent and destructive people roam the lands. The King of Nature tried so desperately to reason with the kings of the lands; to give freedom to their people. The King of Nature was denied and threaten to be killed by the Tyrant kings.
