It’s just past one AM now and my dad is asleep and so is my uncle. I put on the sweat pants and black hoodie, tucking my face behind a black scarf so only my eyes were showing. Just as I was about to head over and exit through my window I catch the reflection of my camera lense peeking out from inside of my closet on the top shelf. I sighed. Damn it Elis.
It didn’t take long for me to get to one of my favourite rooftops. I take in a breath of the frigid air, my binder tightening as my lungs expanded, breathing out a cloudy puff of steam. It was just cold enough that it could be seen clearly behind the black backdrop of the city and almost moonless night. There was only a sliver of the silver crescent showing. It’s the city so there weren't many stars but it was still nice to see the ones that were visible.
I liked perching on the edge of building tops like this, it made me feel a bit like spiderman. I don’t plan on being like him but I do like the guy, granted Miles Meralis has started to climb the top to being my favourite if we’re being candid, that new movie really gave his character, you know, actual character. As I was taking in the night air my hearing picked up something, sounded like a fight, and this wasn’t just two people brawling outside a pup. I got up and started running from rooftop to rooftop, the fast crunch of my feet against the thin layer of gravel. I hear it only in the background as I focused on following the sound of the fight. As I jumped across the buildings the wind rushed passed me, really getting some air time with some of those jumps. I was getting better at navigating the city this way.
I came up on the sound of fighting that I was following, crouching on the edge of the building to asses the situation in the alleyway before I decided whether I should jump down. After all if it was just some idiots beating the shit out of each other over something stupid I was going to just let them hash it out. As I got closer I could see that there was one guy fighting two others with another two on the ground and writhing. They were holding their own though. It really didn’t look like they needed my help. So I ended up just watching as the other two went down. That wasn't the end of it though, the guy that was left standing put his boot on one of the other’s throat. I honed in on his voice to hear what he was saying to the guy bloody face on the ground.
“Where is he?” The guy’s voice was calm, it was a question but it sounded more like a demand. The guy on the ground said nothing and the boot that was on his neck pressed down harder, causing him to cough up more blood. I flinched, I couldn't let this guy crush this guy’s neck and kill him. He bent over more to get closer to this face as his boot was still on his neck. “I don’t care if you want a broken windpipe I’ll get it out of the other ones if I have to, I don’t need you alive.” I was about to jump down hearing him threaten the guy like that but luckily the one covered in blood opened his mouth and actually answered the question, saying a street address on the other side of town. The guy’s boot remained there for a second before removing it. As he was leaving he made sure to give the guy one last kick in the ribs as he left the alleyway. I followed him as he flagged down a taxi and got in. I knew where he was going, so I headed to the address as fast as I could. Luckily I’m not confined by the streets so I can get to most places in the city very fast. Google maps dose help with knowing where the place actually is though.
As my shoes landed on the roof of the building next to the one he was supposed to be showing up at, there were a few things that I noticed quiqly. There were some shady looking dudes in suits standing at the front door and a few more smoking at the side door in the aly facing me. The street wasn't busy, which was not surprising considering the part of town this was in. You don't drive past here unless you need to.
Not even a minute later, a taxi pulls up and the guys at the door get visibly tense. The guy from before very calmly gets out of the taxi, his hood still up with his hands in the pockets of his leather jacket. He says something or other to the two standing at the door. I didn't get my hearing honed in on their conversation fast enough and missed it. Clearly it wasn't that important though because immediately after he grabbed one guy's head and smashed it into the others, both of them down for the count as there mass of bodies hit the ground. The two guys smoking and talking loudly to each other in the alleyway not even noticing. He faced my direction for a brief moment as he kicked one of the bodies out of the way. I think he may have seen me from the corner of his eye though because next thing I knew his head shot up and he was looking directly at me.
