Again Lindsay's attention moved to where Daniel sat, only for her to blush and look away as she was met by sky blue eyes. He was watching her, peering at her through dark chocolate brown bangs. His hair was always just a little too long and she had loved to run her fingers through it. Sitting up a little straighter, it made her slightly uneasy knowing he was watching her. The bell rang, signally the end of homeroom and the start of regular classes. Lindsay hurriedly tucked a red curl behind her ear and rushed from the room with her bag. Not wanting Daniel to catch her and start a conversation she wasn't ready to have.
Head down as she rushed off to her first class, science. Her relief was short-lived, as she slipped behind a desk in the far corner of the room. Cassidy entered with a flick of hair and a swish of her hips, taking the seat next to Lindsay, chattering away.
"Have you seen the new guy?" Cassidy said fanning herself with her time table.
"New guy? No."
"Oh my god, Linds! He's in my homeroom! Blonde with beautiful blue eyes! And can you say skater boy." Cassidy got a devilish grin on her lips as she looked sideways at Lindsay. This was the look she got when she was planning a makeover, or taking on the challenge of attracting a boy. Not that it was much of a challenge for Cassidy, she was one of the prettiest girls in their year. There wasn’t a time where she didn’t have some boy chasing after her.
"Cass... " Lindsay sighed, interrupted as the teacher stood up from his desk. Starting to instruct the class on what this year's science would be like. Spouting off a checklist of supplies they would need to bring, boring first day things. There would be no actual learning happening today. The students would move from class to class, being introduced to the teachers and various subjects. By the end of the day they would finally be assigned lockers.
Cassidy as usual, would demand to have her locker next to Lindsay's. Which the secretary would give her, because arguing with her was a waste of time. The spoiled girl wanted what she wanted and nothing else mattered. Lindsay sometimes wished she had the same quality, being able to get what she wanted. Then again she was more laid back than that and she took what was given, it was just a locker.
Until it came time to put her books in her locker and noticed it was across the hall from Daniel's. He was talking with whom, Lindsay assumed, was the new guy Cassidy had mentioned before and she was right. With the run-down sneakers and baggy jeans, this boy with too long blonde hair and a piercing in his lip, screamed skater punk. This new guy's locker was next to Daniels which was across from Cassidy’s. Who was leaning against her own and watching him, with a look that could only be described as devouring and possessive.
"I thought you wanted Bradley to notice you?" Lindsay remarked loftily, sorting her belongings into her locker. Half tempted to go back to the office and get her locker moved across the school. She could practically feel those sad blue eyes watching her back. It was nearly unbearable, she knew today was going to be hard, but not this hard. Part of her just wanted to throw herself into his arms and beg for forgiveness, but she knew it was for the best in the end.
"Huh? Oh.. Yes, well, as you can see, he's already all over Ronnie." Cassidy spat venomously as if the name was disgusting on her tongue. Nodding her head in the direction of the boy in question, causing Lindsay to look down the hall. There was beautiful Veronica, with her short blonde pixie cut. Laughing and leaning against her locker at the end of the hall, with the football quarterback. Raven-haired, Bradley was leaning over her, his arm bent and resting on the door over her head.
Though Lindsay assumed from that position he was looking down Ronnie's shirt which had a very low cut neckline. This made her snicker at the lewd manner of boys, Daniel had never been like that. He was always naturally a gentleman, Lindsay bit her lip as the unwanted rush of emotions hit her. Needing to be away from the school now, she had, had enough.
"Can we just go home now? I'm tired of school already." when Cassidy didn't answer Lindsay looked at her. She was still staring at the new boy and chewing on her bottom lip, giving her a nudge with her elbow "Cass!"
"What!? Oh. Fine," she rolled her eyes as dramatically as ever and looped her arm through Lindsay's dragging her away. "You know, Daniel is still maddeningly in love with you, Linds, and I can tell, being your best friend, that you still like him too,"
"Enough Cass!" Lindsay growled and glared at her blonde friend as she slid into the passenger's seat of the car.
"I'm just saying," the engine roared to life and settled into a purr "That if you really wanted, he'd take you back in a heartbeat"
"Cass I don't want to talk about this again, we're going to separate colleges after graduation!" Lindsay glared at her some more. Her emerald eyes darkening with annoyance and frustration. Cassidy had been talking about nothing but boys and Daniel all summer. Clicking her seat belt into place as the car sped off out of the parking lot is a squeal of tires on pavement. Lindsay mused a moment on the miracle that Cassidy had yet to be pulled over for speeding.
Leaning her head on the window and watching the school disappear behind them. It was daunting that it was only the first day, she'd have to go back tomorrow. To face it all again and now with Daniel’s locker across from hers. How was she going to face those sad blue eyes every day? she knew it was only a matter of time before Daniel would try to talk to her. Could she be strong and firm in her decision? She wasn't so sure.
Cassidy was right, she missed him, not just as a boyfriend, but one of her best friends. A gasp of surprise ripped from her as Cassidy slammed on the breaks in front of her house. Nearly choking her with her seat belt, the material scratching into her soft skin, leaving a bit of a red line. She had been talking the entire time but Lindsay hadn't been listening. Undoing her seat belt quickly and swinging open the car door,
"See you tomorrow," she cut Cassidy off as she jumped from the car. Heading into the house, waving over her shoulder.
Her mom wouldn't be home from work yet, so she would have the house to herself and time to think and write. Kicking off her shoes by the front door before heading up the stairs. Her bag seemed heavier now than before and was digging into her shoulders even though she had left a lot of her things in her locker. The day seemed to have been longer than any other school day and now she felt exhausted from her thoughts. Reaching her room, and tossing her bag aside.
She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and groaned, not only did she feel exhausted but she looked it. Crossing to her bed piled high with pillows and childhood stuffed animals, still unmade from this morning. Lindsay threw herself onto it, a sigh of contentment passing over her lips as her head rested on the pillow. Exhaustion taking over and slowly pulling her into unconsciousness
"Just a nap.." she murmured into the pillow as she hugged it close, her eyes closed, drifting into sleep.
In the alleyway again, feet bare and cold, it was raining this time. She turned and there he was the tall, dark, familiar figure from before, reaching for her. He had no face, she tried to scream as her eyes flew open. It took her a moment to realize that she was still in her room and that she had once again been dreaming. Rubbing her hands over her face, trying to push away her terror.
Letting out a sigh and sitting up, Lindsay looked around the room. The sun had gone down and it was now dark in the room. Yawning into the back of her hand as she slipped off the bed, crossing the room to flicking on the light. Her stomach growled, she decided to head downstairs, no sign of her mom anywhere. Assuming she was working late, Lindsay raided the kitchen and ended up making a plate of crackers and cheese.
Bringing the snack back up to her room where she settled herself into the chair at her desk and pulled out her journal. Flipping through the pages of her journal to a blank page, placing her chin in her hand and her elbow on the desk. She was determined that this time her entry would not consist of her whining about Daniel.
Time seemed to drag on as her pen hovered over paper not entirely sure where she should start the entry. Nibbling on a piece of cheese before she finally started to write, describing her reoccurring dream about the ally first. The shadowed figure without a face that terrified her and somehow seemed to be someone she knew. Writing it out seemed to make it less frightening and she slumped over the desk a bit. Munching on her crackers and cheese. It was only a matter of time before going into detail about her first day of school and Daniel.
A frown creased over her brow as she reached for a cracker and her hand found an empty plate. Looking up in surprise, catching movement out the corner of her eye, she turned her head toward standing mirror. There in the reflection was a man looming over her and before she could say or do anything there was a cloth over her mouth. Inhaling to scream, a rancid smell filled her nostrils. Clawing at the hand over her mouth and trying to twist herself free.
Terror was building in her chest, eyes wide with panic. The more she struggled the harder he held onto her. Throwing her elbows back in his gut trying to get him to let her go, he only let out a grunt to let her know she had met her mark. Nothing she did seemed to make his grip loosen. Her head started to feel fuzzy and her thoughts were becoming more and more unclear.
Unable to string her thoughts together, all she could do was claw at his hand weakly. Breathing hard as she struggled, though it was impossible to do much. Being stuck in her chair at her desk with this man’s arms wrapped around her like a steel cage. She was pushing her feet against the floor, trying hard to knock herself backwards and maybe knock the man off balance. Failing as well as her limbs began to feel heavy and weak. One last inhale to let out a scream that never came, her eyes rolled back and closed, everything falling away.
