The lights are off as she pulls into the driveway, shutting off the car. Gwen glances at her watch, checking the time. 12:01. She sighs and slips from the car, grabbing her bag before shutting and locking the door. She goes inside, locking the door behind her. She hears talking from the living room and pokes her head into the room, seeing the tv on. She moves into the room, finding Harvey asleep on the couch, a pizza box on the coffee table. She winces, shutting the tv off before she crouches in front of the couch, taking in Harvey’s face as he lets out a sigh in his sleep, his eyebrows furrowing. She brushes hair away from his face, fingers brushing his cheek gently.
“Harvey.” She breathes and he stirs, his blue eyes opening slowly as he wakes. He yawns, covering his mouth. He shifts onto his side, eyes searching her face. He smiles sleepily at her, letting out a soft hum.
“Hey.” He murmurs, his voice thick with sleep. Gwen hums, kissing his forehead.
“Sorry, I’m late.” Harvey hums, his eyelids drooping shut.
“Hey, Harv. C’mon. Let’s go to bed.” Gwen says, shaking his shoulder gently. Harvey blinks his eyes open and nods.
“Ok.” He says and sits up, yawning again. Gwen stands and offers him her hand. He takes it and she pulls him up into a hug, tucking her face into his shoulder. Gwen lets out a shaking breath and breathes him in, shutting her eyes tightly. Harvey hugs back, his arms warm around her. He leans heavily against her, still half-asleep.
“I love you.” Gwen’s voice is a rushed breath of air, barely audible. Harvey doesn’t respond with words, pulling back slightly instead and sliding a hand under her chin, tipping her head back to meet his eyes. He leans his forehead against hers and lets out a sigh, his breath smelling like mint. Gwen lets out a breath of her own, shutting her eyes.
“Harvey. I love you. I know that I can be difficult to--” Harvey cuts her off, pressing his lips to hers gently. Gwen squeezes her eyes shut and kisses him back, feeling her eyes start to water. Harvey pulls back, a frown curling his lips. He brushes her cheeks with his thumbs.
“Why’re you crying, Lynn? What’s wrong?” He asks and she swallows, wiping her face.
“Nothing. I’m ok.” Harvey frowns and takes her hands in his, his thumbs running over her knuckles.
“Talk to me, please.” Gwen searches his face, seeing nothing but concern in his blue eyes. She swallows, dropping her eyes to his chest, letting out a heavy sigh.
“Stuff happened at work today that… I don’t know…” She shrugs, trailing off. Harvey lets out a breath and presses a kiss to her forehead.
“C’mon. Let’s go get ready for bed and you can tell me… If you want.” He says and Gwen nods. Harvey takes her hand and laces their fingers together, tugging her into the bedroom. Harvey flicks the light on and Gwen drops his hand, moving to change into her pajamas.
“My parents were really disappointed that they didn’t get to talk to you. They’re used to you having the day off.” Harvey says and Gwen nods, moving to the bed. She removes her glasses and sets them on the nightstand. She slips under the covers and Harvey shuts off the light, moving back to the bed to join her.
“I’m disappointed too. Usually, I get the whole day to spend with my favorite guy.” She murmurs and Harvey chuckles, his arms sliding around her waist.
“You wanna tell me what happened at work?” Harvey asks and Gwen sighs, shifting closer to him. She leans her forehead against his shoulder, shutting her eyes.
“So, Melanie proposed to Alison.”
“That’s wonderful! Alison said yes, I’m assuming?” Harvey asks and Gwen hums.
“Yeah…” Harvey kisses the top of her head.
“But?” He asks and Gwen lets out a heavy sigh, wrapping her arms around him.
“Joseph and Alison used to be engaged.”
“They were not,” Harvey says in disbelief.
“They were, but… Joseph apparently got drunk at his bachelor party and…” Gwen trails off, hugging Harvey tightly.
“He slept with someone, didn’t he?” Harvey asks and Gwen nods.
“Yeah. He said that he called off the wedding right when they were about to be married, said he couldn’t go through with it. He never told Alison the reason why he called it off.”
“Yikes. Why didn’t he tell her?” Harvey asks.
“Said Alison already saw him as an asshole and he didn’t want her to hate him too much. He’s still in love with her.” Harvey hums softly, tucking his face into Gwen’s hair.
“You know… I will never do something like that to you.” He whispers, his voice soft in Gwen’s ear. She blinks open her eyes and feels his arms tighten around her.
“Never ever. I’m way too committed to you to do something like that.” Gwen pushes away from him, meeting his eyes in the dark.
“You say that now, but what’s gonna happen when you’re suddenly drunk and you’re in bed with someone else?” Harvey frowns, lifting a hand to her face. He cups her cheek, his thumb stroking her skin.
“That’s not going to happen, Gwen. I promise you.” Gwen’s eyes begin to water.
“Promises can be broken, Harv. You know that. My dad promised my mom the same damn thing, she told me herself before… You get it.” Gwen says and Harvey nods.
“I know that promises can be broken and that in turn creates broken trust and broken hearts, but, Gwen, I’m serious. I won’t cheat on you. Never in a million years would the thought of cheating on you, my wonderful, amazing, smart, gorgeous fiance, cross my mind. If it ever did, I’d probably have to reevaluate my whole life, because there is no right-minded person out there who would go and break your heart.” He says, his tone leaving no room for jokes. He is serious, Gwen notes, Harvey pressing a kiss to her forehead.
“Anything else happen at work that you wanna share?” Harvey asks and Gwen rolls the idea in her head.
“Joseph… He smokes. Says he needed something for the pain of breaking things off with Alison and he didn’t want to turn to alcohol because of his dad.” Harvey doesn’t reply, pressing another kiss to Gwen’s forehead instead.
“I knew something was up with him last time I saw him. He smelled like cigarette smoke but he told me he was borrowing the jacket of a friend who smoked. God, I should’ve said something.” Harvey mutters and Gwen feels him pull back a little, back enough where she can look up and see his face lit by the moonlight.
“I… He didn’t even react to when Alison teased him. Usually, he’s quick to tease her back but… Something was different, Harv. Maybe he realized something like he had a mistake. But, then again, he did think Melanie was better for her than he ever was. Or… No, I think I said that but… He agreed, I think.” Harvey chuckles, tapping her nose gently with his index finger.
“You’re tired. You know how I can tell?” He asks and Gwen shakes her head.
“How can you tell?” She asks and he chuckles.
“You just start talking about a mile a minute. Just words leaping from your mouth, like they’re desperate to be heard.” Gwen shrugs and snuggles closer to Harvey’s warm chest.
“Maybe I’m not even tired. Maybe I just feel like I can talk to you about anything and everything.” Harvey raises an eyebrow.
“Sure, Lynn. I think you’re tired.” Gwen shakes her head, looking up at him.
“I’m not. Really. But, if you are, you can go to sleep.” She says, her hands resting on his chest.
“Well, do you want to talk about anything else?” Harvey asks and Gwen shrugs, tapping her fingers against his chest.
“I don’t know. Maybe…” She trails off.
“You can talk to me. I’m right here, sweetheart.” Gwen rolls her eyes.
“I know you are, but… I just don’t want to dump all my shit on you. You have your own things to deal with and you shouldn’t have to deal with mine.” Harvey chuckles and leans his forehead against Gwen’s.
“Gwen… You know I don’t mind. I’m here for you, Gwen. You can talk to me about anything.”
“I know…” Gwen murmurs, feeling his heartbeat beneath her fingers.
“Would you mind if we… Talked about us?” She asks and she sees Harvey blink.
“Not at all. W-what about us?” He asks, his voice trembling. Gwen moves her hands up to cup his face.
“Relax. Nothing bad. Promise.” She whispers and Harvey lets out a breath.
“Ok.” He says softly and she presses a gentle kiss to his lips, pulling back before he can react.
“Sometimes, I think you’re too good for me.” She murmurs and Harvey frowns.
“You’re too… Understanding and quick to apologize. I’m just… Scared one day I’ll do something that hurts you and you’ll just forgive me without even thinking.”
“Gwen…” Harvey begins and Gwen shakes her head, cutting him off.
“I just… I don’t want to hurt you and have you not say anything. So… Promise me something.” She says and Harvey nods.
“Anything.” He says and Gwen lets out a breath.
“If I hurt you, in any way, will you tell me? So I can apologize and we can talk it out?” She asks and Harvey nods.
“Of course. Promise. Same goes for me. Promise?” Gwen nods.
“Yeah. Promise.” She says and Harvey gives her a smile that steals the oxygen from her lungs and she lets out a gasp.
“You alright?” Harvey asks and Gwen nods.
“Yeah. I’m fine. Just… Be careful with that smile.” Harvey blinks then lets out a laugh.
“What, I steal your air?” He asks and Gwen nods. Harvey chuckles and kisses her forehead.
“I love you.” He murmurs against her skin and she hums.
“I love you too, Harv. I’m so glad we met.” Harvey chuckles in reply.
“Me too. That was a ride, the first time we met.” Gwen sighs heavily and hides her face in Harvey’s chest.
“I apologized about fifty times to you in the span of an hour.” She murmurs, her voice slightly muffled. Harvey hums and Gwen feels him suppressing the laugh.
“I spilled hot coffee all over your uniform and almost gave you third-degree burns, Harvey, and you brushed it off like it was absolutely nothing to you!” Gwen cries, her fingers curling around the fabric of his shirt.
“Because it was nothing. It’s not like you were the first to spill hot coffee on me.” Gwen lifts her head.
“Still! You could’ve gotten hurt.” She murmurs, hands holding his shirt tightly.
“But I didn’t and then, a week later, we went on our first date.” Gwen rolls her eyes and hides her face again.
“You looked beautiful.”
“I wasn’t even wearing anything fancy. Just jeans, a tee shirt, and a sweater. With my converse.”
“So? You don’t need to dress fancy to look beautiful. Besides, I know how uncomfortable you are with wearing dresses and heels and the like. You looked comfortable.” Gwen sighs.
“Whatever you say, mister.” Harvey chuckles.
“You love me.” He says and Gwen lifts her head, looking up at him.
“Yeah. I do. A lot.” Harvey grins, pressing his forehead to hers, their noses bumping.
“I must be the luckiest man on earth.” Gwen rolls her eyes, waiting for him to continue.
“What with meeting you, Gwendolyn Andrews, the most beautiful woman ever. Getting you to fall in love, or at least pretend to, with me.” He says and Gwen frowns, cupping his face.
“Harvey, what was that?” She asks and he raises an eyebrow.
“Why in the world would I pretend to be in love with you?” She asks and he looks away, shrugging.
“I… Why else would you say ‘yes’ to marrying me? Why else would you move in with me? Why else would you--” He stops, Gwen frowning up at him.
“Because I actually love you, Harv. I’m not pretending. I really love you. I really fucking love you.” She says, gritting her teeth against the tears welling up in her eyes.
“I know that sometimes… It’s hard to tell, but… I really love you. I’m not good at expressing my emotions, but… I thought… I thought I was doing well expressing my love for you, Harv.” She says, her voice a choked whisper. She presses a hand over her mouth and leans her forehead against his chest, her other hand gripping his shirt tightly.
“I’m sorry, Gwen. I shouldn’t have said anything.” Gwen shakes her head.
“No. I’m glad you did. I’ll make sure you know I love you. Promise.” Harvey smiles, but it doesn’t reach his eyes like it usually does. Gwen wipes her face and slides a hand up Harvey’s chest, cupping the back of his neck.
“Trust me on this. I really fucking love you, Harv. You’re… You’re my everything, not to be cheesy or anything. That’s your job, but seriously. I’m so in love with you it’s not even funny.” She says, tugging his head down to her level.
“Gwen, I--” She cuts him off, kissing his lips gently, shutting her eyes. She feels his arms tug her closer as he kisses her back just as gently. He pulls away with a gentle sigh.
“I… I needed to hear that. Thank you.” Gwen hums.
“No problem. We should get some sleep, don’t you think?” She asks and he hums, resting his forehead against hers.
“I guess we should. We both have to work in the morning.” Gwen hums, resting her hands back on his chest. She can feel his heartbeat under her fingertips, the steady beat of it. It’s soothing and she shifts down the bed slightly, pressing her ear to his chest, listening to his heartbeat. Harvey lets out a breath and runs his fingers through Gwen’s hair.
“Sweet dreams, Lynn.” Gwen hums, tangling one of her hands in Harvey’s shirt, keeping him close.
“You too, love. Sleep well.” She breathes, sleep claiming her seconds later.
