“You have a gun, don’t you? Let’s rob someone.”
We made our way down the steps. It was dark, no lights were turning on, nor was anybody there to stop us. The building might have been abandoned, though whether it was or not didn’t matter much to me after I heard Nova’s ridiculous suggestion. “I hope you’re joking right now,” I said.
“Why would I be?”
And crap, it seemed that she truly wasn’t playing around. “We can’t.” I shook my head. “I’m not killing anyone.” We were getting closer to the exit, and the dimmed, yellow glow from the spotlights outside were bleeding onto the ground, past the glass door that separated us from the outside world.
Nova paused before opening it. She held out her arm, which made me stop, too. “Relax,” she told me with a click of her tongue. “I’m not asking you to murder some innocent person. We’ll just scare them, and take whatever they have on hand—it’ll be fine! Now…” Her eyes darted left, then right, as she observed the unsuspecting passersby. “Do you have a preference?” she asked me, her tone much too innocent for what we were about to do.
I took a peek outside the glass door.
A) There was a young man to our right. He looked to be about my age, and he was struggling with carrying a pile of books.
B) There was a young woman at our left. She was about to get on her bike, yet she was also looking down at her phone, and definitely distracted.
C) In the alleyway right up ahead across the street, an elderly priest was reading a bible. He would surely make for an easy target, and the location was less likely to get us caught, however I couldn’t help but feel like something was off about the man; it made me hesitate.
