Back in the day, the guys at MTV came up with the idea of bringing together individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and filmed the ensuing situations that resulted from them living together. At the time, it was hoped that this would encourage them (and the audience) to learn mutual tolerance and respect. That didn't exactly hold sway now, did it, and reality television has become synonymous with trashy.
