Beau and Whisper spent two weeks in the Upwalker's den. During that time, they had only been inside the cage and in the room where they had first spoken to each other. Beau became afraid of how much time they'd have together, and her fear only worsened when the Upwalkers arrived to place them in two separate cages.
"Don't worry." Whisper told her as he stepped toward the cage, looking back at her. "We can still be together out there."
"We can't, Whisper. We may both have Hyena blood, but you're not a Wolf. You're a Silver Fox. My pack would never allow us to be together."
"It is a prophecy that was told by the Star Teller, Beau. Even if your pack won't allow it, they have no choice. It is what our ancestors want."
Beau watched him step into the cage, and the Upwalkers closed the door to it as soon as he had his tail in. She laid her ears back against her head as she stepped into her own cage, and she laid down when the door was closed.

Beau stepped out of the cage, and she was surprised to see that the Upwalkers had placed both her and Whisper in the forest between their dens. The Upwalkers took the cages with them as they got back into the larger cages and left. The familiar sounds of squirrels and rabbits filled Beau's ears as the smaller creatures ran about in the grass at their paws.
"Do you think they put us here for a reason?" Beau asked, looking at Whisper.
"They're probably hoping that we'd both go to one of the families." Whisper replied, looking around.
Beau's heart felt heavy at the thought of having to leave her pack. Whisper stepped toward where her den was, and he looked at her.
"I don't think your pack will be welcoming to me. I'll walk with you just to be sure that you get there." He said.
Beau followed him as he led the way to her den, and she noticed that he was incredibly cautious as they got closer. He crouched down so low that his belly touched the forest floor. Beau stood beside him, and they both looked out over the clearing where her den was.
"I guess this is where we say goodbye." Beau muttered.
"I'll see you again whenever you hunt." Whisper stated.
Beau hesitated before she stepped toward her den. As soon as she stepped out of the trees, every wolf turned to look at her.
"Beau?" Scout questioned, cautiously stepping forward.
"Hello, Scout." Beau replied.
Scout barked in glee and ran up to her. The two brushed against each other.
"Where have you been? We thought the Upwalkers would return you the day after they took you like they do with Hiccup!" Scout's tail wagged as he looked to his sister.
"I found a mate, Scout. I think that's what they do when they take our Queens for a long period of time. They try and find them mates, and they found one for me."
"If you have a mate, why isn't he with you?"
"He's a Silver Fox, Scout. He was afraid you'd try and chase him off."
"A Silver Fox? Why would they mate you with one of those?"
"He has Hyena blood. Scout, there are others like us! I don't think there's any purebred creatures here."
Scout's ears laid back against his head, and he paced in a circle around Beau.
"Are you expecting pups?" Scout asked, pausing to look at his sister.
"I don't know." Beau replied. "Wouldn't it be too early to tell?"
"Yes. We'll have to wait another few moons before we can have the Healer check."
"Why would it matter if I'm expecting pups?"
"Beau, if you are expecting pups, they aren't like us. They'll have Silver Fox blood as well. We've hunted the Silver Foxes." Scout shook his head. "If you have mixed blooded pups, you and the pups will have to leave."
"You can't be serious!" Beau growled. "I'm your sister. If I have pups, you'd be exiling your kin!"
"Don't try and change my mind, Beau. You know what happened to our mother when she was mated with a Wild Dog. I am only doing as the pack always has."
~
Beau's ears laid back against her head as she made her way to the Healer. She passed Scout as she walked, and she could feel her brother's eyes on her as she approached the she-wolf.
"What can I do for you?" The Healer, Poppy, questioned, her blue eyes focusing on Beau.
"I wanted you to check and see if I'm expecting pups." Beau answered, sitting down.
"Lay down for me, please."
Beau laid in the soft grass that surrounded the Healer's nest. She moved so she was laying on her side, and Poppy's touch was gentle as she pressed her paw to Beau's body. Beau knew from Poppy's expression that she was expecting pups, not needing her words.
"It seems you are. I'm so sorry, Beau. I know about who your mate is, and it's a shame that Scout won't let you stay." Poppy said.
"It's alright, Poppy." Beau got to her paws and lowered her head. "I'll be fine."
Beau had her tail between her legs as she walked to Scout. Her brother sat at the opening to the den, his eyes on her.
"I assume you are by the way you're acting." Scout scoffed.
"I'll leave tonight." Beau replied.
Scout nodded once. "Don't let the others know. I'll tell them when you're gone."
~
Beau was quiet as she slipped out of the den, walking with urgency into the trees. She paused to sniff the air and the ground, and she followed Whisper's faint scent as she headed toward the Fox dens. She crouched down, her belly fur prickling as it touched the grass, and she looked over the Fox dens. There were several of them dug into the ground, unlike the pack's single den under the rock. She spotted a small group of Silver Foxes her size trotting toward the trees, so she followed behind them.
She could smell Whisper's scent among them, but the group stayed together. It wasn't until a single Silver Fox paused as the others went ahead that she thought she had been scented.
"Beau?" The Silver Fox looked around as it sniffed the air.
"Whisper!" Beau hissed, standing and running to the Silver Fox.
The two brushed their sides together, and Beau gave Whisper an affection lick.
"What are you doing out here in the middle of the night? There aren't wolves out hunting, too, are there?" Whisper asked, looking around.
"No. I'm alone." Beau replied.
"Why are you out here?"
"I was exiled."
"Why? I thought your brother was happy you returned."
Beau sighed. "He said I could stay as long as I wasn't expecting pups with you."
Whisper's eyes widened as he looked at the she-wolf. "Then, you're expecting pups?"
Beau nodded, and Whisper chirped in excitement. Beau smiled as he ran his snout against hers.
"That's great!" He said. "Come with me! We must tell the Star Teller!"
Beau laughed as she followed the excited Silver Fox to his dens. Whisper was quick to disappear into a den that was close to the middle of the clearing, and he led a slightly smaller Silver Fox to Beau.
"Beau, this is Wilt. She's the Star Teller." Whisper explained.
"Hello, Beau. It's nice to finally meet you. Our ancestors mentioned a wolf with a silver eye, and they said that Whisper's mate would be the wolf." Wilt said.
"It's nice to meet you, too, Wilt." Beau replied. "Whisper told me about you while we were with the Upwalkers."
"The Upwalkers are always the cause behind such wonderful mysteries. This land is inhabited by all kinds of creatures, but our ancestors have never once told me about a creature that comes from three bloodlines. Your pups will change this forest for the better, Beau, and the Upwalkers will lose their control over us." Wilt's blue eyes mesmerized Beau.
"But where will I go? My pack won't let me stay." Beau muttered.
"You will stay here until the pups are born. Once they are old enough to walk and open their eyes, you and Whisper will leave. You will be the start of the Silver Eyes."
"The Silver Eyes?" Whisper looked to the Star Teller. "You never told me about that."
"I wasn't told the last of the prophecy until a few nights ago. I wanted to be sure that Beau truly was expecting pups before I mentioned it."
"But what will we do about Pebble? She won't be happy to have another Queen."
"Pebble has no say in this. Whisper, dig Beau a den under the Great Oak. She will be comfortable underneath something rather than just in the ground like us."
Whisper nodded and weaved his way through the den littered clearing. Wilt stayed beside Beau, and both watched as he began to dig underneath a large and tall oak tree that was near the small pond that rested in the clearing.
"How is this going to work?" Beau asked, looking at Wilt. "Our ways are so different. How are we going to bring up pups when we have different beliefs?"
"You will have to mend your beliefs, and so will he. Your pups will be something new, so they will not share individual beliefs." Wilt replied. "They will share beliefs from both creatures they share blood with. It will be up to you and Whisper to decide what they believe."
Whisper returned to them, his paws caked in mud and dirt. Beau wagged her tail as he brushed his body against her side.
"You'll be much more comfortable in the den." He said. "We can speak more with Wilt in the morning."
Beau said her farewells to Wilt and followed Whisper to the Great Oak. She followed his pawsteps as he made his way around the dens. Beau paused to see what the entrance to her new den looked like. The Great Out had several large uprooted branches that tangled and stretched along the ground. Whisper wagged his tail as he watch Beau look over the entrance.
"I made sure I dug enough room so that there's enough space for you and the pups when they're born." He stated.
"You won't be staying in it with us?" Beau muttered.
"It's best that you stay in a den alone. Pebble already dislikes me simply for being the ace of our litter. She would hate me more for being the Fox in the prophecy."
"Are you saying that your leader doesn't know about the prophecy?"
"All she knows is that the Uprights forced us to be mates."
Beau nodded in understanding. "Why is there a dirt hill around the entrance?"
"It's a common Silver Fox den for Queens. The dirt hill prevents water from getting into the den if the lake overflows."
Beau hesitated before she stepped over the dirt hill and slipped into the den. The walls of the den were made of tree roots and dirt, and there was enough space in the den for Beau to stand up. She walked as far from the entrance as possible, and there was enough room for Whisper to join her if he wished. Beau focused on the Silver Fox when he poked his head into the den.
"Wilt says it might ran tonight, so I'll cover the entrance with leaves to prevent too much water gets in." He said.
"Can't you stay with me?" Beau asked. "Just for tonight? It's a new den, and I feel uneasy."
Whisper thought for a few moments before he joined her inside of the den. Beau watched curiously as he began to dig into the side of the den, avoiding the roots. He left around two claw lengths from the bottom of the den and the bottom of the area he was digging.
"Move here, please." Whisper said, placing his paw on the bottom of the higher area.
Beau very easily moved to the new area, and she watched as Whisper began to dig deeper in the original den area. He moved the loose dirt to the outside, most likely strengthening the dirt hill at the den's entrance. He was quick to slide back into the den and join Beau in the raised area.
"If it rains harder than usual, the water wont be able to reach us when it gets in." He said.
Whisper curled up beside Beau, closing his eyes and drifting to sleep. Beau laid her ears back against her head as she relaxed, and her eyes closed when exhaustion overwhelmed her.
