My little sister stood at the front door, refusing to move.

Three years younger than me, she was everything that I was not: popular, happy and clever at school.

She was also incredibly annoying.

“Good morning!”

“Stop blocking the door, Macie.”

“Only if you answer one question.”

“What?”

“Why were you crying last night?”

I stared at her.

“Stop eavesdropping outside my room, it’s creepy,” I said finally.

“I wasn’t eavesdropping, I was just on my way to the loo. Is it those horrible boys again—”

“You’re gonna make us late, my school’s farther than yours…"

“I overheard the principal’s phone call to Mum and Dad last night. You got beaten up again, didn’t you? Why didn’t you report—”

“Shut up Macie, I don’t need your—”

“You’re so stupid Al. If you always try to do everything yourself, you’ll get really hurt one day!”

My little sister swung her bag over her shoulder and marched out the door.
