The Common Folk
Before we get too involved in the Fae we must remember the common folk, the mundane, the human. Humans have nothing remarkable or magical about them and are usually the ones tricked, tourmented, kidnapped or eaten by the Fae. While humans can’t become magical there are certain schools called Guilds where they can study the sciences and become Alchemists or Apothecaries depending on discipline. These schools are notoriously difficult to get into and the price of education in such works are for rich men only so there are few alchemists and apothecaries around today but they are usually never out of work.
We must also note the existence of witches. Witches appear human and have the same (if not shorter) life span of a human however they are not entirely human as they are disposed to having an aptitude for magic. However, they are also not fae as this magic is summoned via chanting and sayings and tools for focusing and channelling magic. Another thing I have found is that the stronger the witch becomes, the more lethargic and distant they are. People often say the strongest witches have their powers and knowledge literally ‘locked away in their heads’ after a certain point. I believe witches to be their own species, possibly a creation from an ancient pairing of a Fae and a human but this cannot be realised currently and the educational books continue to state that they do not exist.

'The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change' - Heraclitus
The Libraries have served their purposes for the people involved in researching and combating the Fae in this world. Now, they lie unused as those concerned have had the knowledge contained in these books passed from one generation to the next and everyone has lived in blissful security for centuries.
Now the Fae have started to change. Small but terrible incidents have started to take place and the systems that have been set in stone for so long have started to crumble in the face of something new and frightening.
Having recently inherited one of these Libraries, Salem Gascoigne intends to undertake new and brave research, documenting these odd Fae instances in hopes of understanding what is really happening to the strange creatures in this world and why they seem to be targeting humans.
With the help of an assistant (who my be less than human) the two set out on this research mission and get themselves tangled up in something bigger than they bargained for.
