The creature was then startled by a loud noise deeper in the forest, and rushed towards it, running flouncing away from the terrified soldier. Then Gaylord turned around, just to be flashed by a bright red light, straight on his face. This startled him and made him scream. It was private Bush, with his military flashlight. Terrified Bushed asked: “What the fuck was that?!”
“I don’t know man let’s just get the hell out of here!”
Later the two soldiers burst into the tent waking up the whole squad.
“What is this kind of mickey mouse shit?!” -The sergeant asked annoyed as he woke up by the two soldier’s noise.
“We gotta get out here guys.”-Gaylord said still out of breath.
“Why? What’s going on?” Jackson asked.
“There is a… I don’t know man! Bigfoot! Sasquatch! It could be Hutton’s mom for all we know! I don’t know what the hell that thing was, but there is some kind of monster out there! and we gotta get the fuck outta here before it finds us!” Bush warned.
“Are you two for real?” -The sergeant asked, actually looking concerned.
“What do you mean are they for real? You don’t actually believe any of that right? …Right?” -Hutton asked. Then the sergeant stayed quiet, and looked down.
“What do you know Sarg?” -Gaylord asked.
“You might be right; we should probably get out of here.” -Then the sergeant stood up and confidently commanded: “Alright boys pack your socks and grab your cocks we gotta leave pronto!”
“Sergeant what exactly are we doing here?” -Gaylord asked again.
“We have a mission, something I was not cleared to tell you.” -He concluded.
Then in the most impulsive and daring move of his life, private Bush rushed towards the sergeant grabbed him by the collar, of his winterwear, and pinned him against the tent.
“What did you get us into?!” -Bush protested.
“Private you best get your hands off me before I cut them off and finger-bang you with them!” -The sergeant said in a very threatening tone of voice.
“No sergeant; Bush is right, what is this?” -Jackson said more calmly.
“Fine.” -Said the sergeant as bush slowly let go off his collar.
“We were sent here to look for a special forces team that was doing a land nav. drill and went missing four weeks ago, they never made it to the rally point. Everyone was very secretive about it; I wasn’t told much either.” -The sergeant confessed, as everyone joined together in a unison loud exhale.
“Okay Gaylord tell us exactly what you saw!” -Hutton commanded.
“This thing was big, it was like a giant bipedal gorilla, and it was all white.” -He answered.
“Call it sarge. Call an extraction.” -Jackson said with his usual cool.
“I can’t call them unless we’ve found the soldiers that went missing.”
“Man fuck the special forces guys! They were that monster’s dinner most likely!” -Bush said.
“Look we have ammo, but the one thing I don’t think we should do is stay out here cornered like bait, we should definitely get moving.” -Hutton said.
-Then the sergeant after composing himself, took a few steps forward, and began to speak: “Look man, the best thing to do right n…” -He was however violently interrupted as a giant white-furred monkey arm ripped through the tent with a powerful swing, in with that same ferocious sweep took off the sergeant’s head without any problem. As the head bounced a few times and then rolled away like a ghastly soccer-ball of death, the disgusted and horror-struck soldiers looked up through the massive cut on the tent, just to see the big and bright eyes of the monkey-man staring back at them from the darkness of the night.
After a unison and coordinated “Oh shit!!” everyone ran away as fast as they could, dispersing like headless chickens, some of them tripping down with branches or rocks, and the others, venturing in the depths of the eerie, dark, and silent forest. Gaylord crossed the threshold of darkness at the not so distant tree-line, with just a few long and desperate strides. Once in the forest, it became easy to become lost, especially when he didn’t know where to he was running, and all he could think about was putting distance between him and the murderous monster of the woods.
Suddenly as the bewildered soldier ran, he fell down into an unexpected deep and dark hole. Trying to crawl out of it seemed the most reasonable answer, until he looked up and saw the monster up there on the surface dragging one of his buddies that were captured by it, suddenly ignoring Gaylord’s presence, the monster threw the mangled and bloody corpse into the hole, and went on with his murderous hunt. It was Hutton, disfigured, bloody, definitely mauled beyond recognition, but an army buddy knows best, they will recognize their army brothers under any conditions. Gaylord picked up the corpse, and dragged him away from the bright moonlight that illuminated the hole, he then, as his vision adjusted to the darkness, was able to recognize, other human remains sticking out of the ground. That’s when it became clear to him, that he was in the monster’s layer. Knowing the creature would be back, he had a futile attempt at crawling out. It was all pointless, the soil was wet, and he couldn’t get a good grip to climb up. Plus the hole was impressively deep, and it will take a lot of effort and luck to make it out of there, that’s when he took a moment to look around, and saw that there was a small cave down there, a mysterious deep passage, maybe a way out, or maybe his most fatal mistake, a tomb of his own digging? Either way it was worth exploring.
He crawled through the little cave, bumping his head a few times with protruding rocks, he couldn’t see, the deeper he went into the hol’, the less he could see anything around him. But where his eyes failed him, his hands became his greatest sonar. He sensed something ghastly, something that startled him, and paralyzed him with fear, it was hair, there was something furry, and fetid laying down there with him, he poked it scarily, several times, but as he go no response, assumed that whatever it was must’ve been dead, and judging by the smell, it probably was. Believing it was some kind of animal, a bear even, he carefully caressed the furry figure, trying to create a mental picture of it, that’s when his hands met the creature’s hands. And he realized, they had a humanoid form. Then it became clear to him, it was a dead man-ape, like the one that was after them trying to kill him, probably a relative of the murderous monster out there in the forest, buried dead deep into a cave.
Gaylord continued crawling through the mud, until he could feel the relieving sensation of fresh air hitting his face, he crawled faster, sensing the imminent exit coming up ahead, and then… he was finally free! He had fallen into a creek right below the exit-hole that led out of the dark graveyard-turned passage. He stumbled up falling down the icy water many times, but managed to cross the creek with ease. As he arrived to the other side, he saw a pair of terrified eyes that came running towards him, it was Jackson, whom almost rival the monster in stature, which was an easy comparison to make at the moment given that the monster was exactly behind him charging at them unhesitant. Jackson jumped on top of Gaylord, expecting him to catch him, and put him out of harms way, but all he accomplished was to knock him down and roll down with him back into the water, creating a big splash. They both stood up just to be amazed by what they encountered; the monster remained hesitantly on the other side of the creek. Cowardly observing from the other side, pacing back and forth. Both Jackson and Gaylord looked at each other baffled.
“What’s wrong?! Scared of some cold water!?” Jackson exclaimed as he triumphantly and daringly tried to splash the monster, who remained on the other side.
“I don’t think it’s the water he’s scared of?” -Gaylord added as he pointed to the other side of the creek. Where a big pack of wolves lurked stealthily looking back at them with their shiny eyes. Then as they looked back in the direction of the creature it was gone. It was now time to run from the wolves.
Back at the camp private Bush had managed to remain hidden, very quietly he managed to stay off the monster’s radar, he tiptoed back to the tent, where they had left the radio, he knew he was running out of time, and that at any moment the creature could show up again, he had mere seconds to make the call, and go to the extraction point, but this time he was not gonna take his chances, so he took his rifle, put a full magazine in it, and loaded it, ready to fire at whatever came storming through that tent. Bush began to set up the radio, he turned it on, he leaned forward ready to talk, and suddenly, he felt the distressing presence behind him, without hesitation, he turned around, and opened fire indiscriminately, killing private Jackson in an instant. Private Gaylord remained unharmed, although the bullets flew past him pretty closely.
“What did you do?!” -Gaylord exclaimed completely taken aback.
“Oh, hell no! you guys had to sneak up on me like that!” -Bush lamented with his broken voice, as they both rushed to Jackson’s aid, but he was undoubtedly dead.
“You killed him!” -Gaylord said as he pushed Bush, but Bush pushed him back and defended himself.
“This is your fault, you know damn well that there is a freaking Sasquatch out there, and if you sneak up on people like that under these circumstances, you’re asking to get shot!”
“Jesus, what are we gonna say?” -Gaylord asked among tears.
“Listen man, right now my main priority is to get out of here, we have the radio, we can call it in. This was a freak accident, that I don’t plan on take the blame for, but most importantly, I don’t plan on staying here discussing this with you! That thing heard the shots, it probably already is on its way here right now. So, what do you say we take the radio, and get as far away from here as we can!”
Suddenly the mighty roar of the horrid beast rumbled through the forest, and it did not sound far at all. The two soldiers looked at each other with terror in their eyes, and without hesitation, they both stood up, and raced for the exit tumbling each other trying to escape selfishly. However, as they came out, they encountered the beast standing right in front of them, they began walking backwards, as the creature walked towards them calmly, but steadily.
“Humans” -The creature muttered loud enough with a vibrating deep, monster voice.
“Step back monster, I could not be more serious!” -Bush warned as he pointed the gun at the monster, but it kept moving forward without hesitation.
“Are you gonna shoot me? Or your only surviving friend?” -The creature said daringly as it walked past Jackson’s corpse.
“What do you want?” -Gaylord asked.
“I want you to leave me alone!”
“Leave you alone? you killed our friends!” -Gaylord protested.
“And your kind killed my family, I am the last one alive! You enter my home, slaughter my family, and then what do you expect…? A warm welcome?
“We had nothing to do with whatever they did to you!” Gaylord replied.
“Then why do you have their weapons? Why are you dressed like them? The ones that killed my family, had the same weapons, and looked just like you, to me there is no difference!” -The creature said as he picked up his pace more menacingly. Suddenly as the creature came worryingly close, the sound of an airsoft gun being shot was heard, and then several more sounds like it one after the other. And without much more fighting, the creature collapsed frontward, causing the ground to shake with its massive size. And from the bushes merged a group of blacked-suited soldiers, moving stealthily towards the target, which laid on the ground, with about four darts nailed on its back.
Bush and Gaylord were both escorted back to an army truck, parked in a dirt road nearby, as they both sat quietly, disconcerted by what they have just witnessed, an old army man walked towards them, they recognized by the insignia on his chest that he was a captain.
“You boys had a hell of a night, tonight.” -He said, as both of the soldiers simply assented with their heads, and didn’t speak a word.
“Listen privates, I’m sure we all understand how important it is for you to keep this to yourselves, and never tell anyone about it. As you can imagine is a matter of national security.” -The captain concluded, as some soldiers began escorting the handcuffed and woozy creature which can barely walked from the high doze of sedatives.
“Where are you taking him?” -Bush asked.
“Well he will no longer be a threat to anyone, that much I can guarantee.” -The captain replied.
“No really, what’s gonna happen to him?” -Gaylord insisted.
“This one is the last of its kind in this particular area, they are very elusive, and almost exclusive to this place, however they have been hunted almost to extinction. We are very surprised, as they are almost never this aggressive, and will almost never attack a human, I mean they are not even carnivores. We are taking him somewhere safe, they’ll run some tests on him I suppose, you know, that kind of stuff.” -The captain said before he gave the frame of the truck window one last gentle slap. “Whoa!” -He exclaimed as to expecting a reply, but all he was met with as cold silence. Seeing as though the two privates weren’t in much of a mood to talk, the captain decided to walk away.
And as the two privates saw them take the creature away, they couldn’t help but think about who the real monsters are.
