Abnormal Rose

Visitation Day Part 4

Visitation Day Part 4

May 12, 2019

"As I read out your name, exit through this door and wait in the Visitation room." She lazily looked down again and begun calling out the names. I waited anxiously, smiling when Olive got called and left. Finally, Lady Tess got to the R's.

"Raina Scott, Ramona Finley, Ron Duncan. Rose Harper." I let out a breath I hadn't know I was holding. Dread once again filled my stomach as images of my parents flooded through my mind. Their disappointed faces always staring at me with a hint of fear and disgust. They hated what I was. Then again, I did too.

I exit through the wooden door next to Lady Tess. Taking deep breaths in an attempt to calm my nerves. I followed Ron Duncan, walking in a line through the brightly lit hallway. Pictures of the lady's and Ms. Hester decorated the walls. Finally, we filed through a large opening connected to the Visitation room. The familiarity of the room brought me some degree of comfort. The windows were big here, though still barred, they were clean enough to look out of. Light streamed from them, rendering the fluorescent lights completely obsolete. I glanced around the room of faces, spotting Olive laughing with her parents. Her dad was very tall and muscular and while her mom was much shorter, she still seemed strong enough to wrestle an Ox. They must enjoy working out, which would explain Olive's toned build.

"Rose!" A familiar voice pulled me from my thoughts. Mom.

I looked towards her and my dad, they were making their way towards an open table at the far side of the room, the exit right behind them. Taking the two seats on one side, I walk towards the single one across from them. I quickly scanned over them, taking in their appearances. My mom's dark, red hair seemed paler and though she was smiling, her dark green eyes seemed incredibly sad. They were slightly puffy, as though she had been crying for a very long time. My dad seemed slightly older as well, worry lines were etched onto his forehead, while his hair was peppered with silver. Someone in the family probably died, their expressions were often that of disgust, not sadness.

"Oh, Rose. It is so nice to see you. How have you been?" My mom asked after we have all found our seats.

"Incarcerated." I replied, not giving away a hint of emotion in my voice.

"Now Rose, show some respect to your mother." My dad said, his voice taking on its familiar coldness.

"I'm fine mother, how are you." I forced, not even bothering with a smile.

"Oh I'm great, thank you, dear. You look so skinny, are they still feeding you enough?"

"Yeah."

"That's good." Her words sounded empty, I knew she didn't care either way. I'm sure they visit just to be able to tell themselves they are good parents, that they aren't the ones to blame for why we were here. Silence fell, broken only by the conversations and laughs of those around us. I was about to say my goodbyes and leave when my dad took a deep breath. He glanced at my mom nervously, she seemed to be close to tears. They were about to tell me something and by the looks on their faces, it wasn't going to be good.

"What?" I asked, my heart rate increasing with every passing second. Maybe someone did die?

"Well, Rose, as you obviously know, your 19th birthday is coming up soon." At my dad's words, my heart gave a leap. We are supposed to leave when we turn 19, I haven't really had the courage to bring it up yet, fearing what they might say.

"Yes?" I say, my voice sounding a lot stronger than what I felt.

"Well, your mom and I have been talking and we have decided that it might not be such a good idea for you to return home.' He said this in such a matter of fact manner, as though it was nothing.

"Dad_"

"Now, we've talked long and hard about this, we aren't about to change our minds. This really is the best course of action, for all parties involved."

"You do deserve to know why, though, dear. We really would...love for you to come home, but we just aren't equipped to handle a... well, someone like you. It wouldn't be fair to you." My mother added.

"We won't just leave you, of course, we will give you some money. There are many places that will take you in."

"Yes, dear. I've heard there's a lot of shelters for people just like you, you might even make some friends."

"We're still your parents, but you will be old enough to look after yourself. You can make of your life whatever you so choose."

Their words jumbled together in my mind, my body trembling as they kept on talking about how great it would be for me to be independent, how this is such a good decision for all of us, how they love me and hate to see me leave. My heart hammered in my chest, my emotions getting the better of me. Before I knew it, I was losing control. I heard the windows begin to vibrate, shaking in their frames. Some chairs started scraping over the floor, the people still in them gasped in surprise. My mom gave a short, surprised scream as our table begun to shake and move towards the wall.

Then my IDtag gave a piercing beep and a short shock of electricity ran through me. I flinched, though at this point I was completely use to the pain. I looked up at my parents, so many words running through my mind. So many things I wanted to tell them. I wanted to yell and scream and tell them how horrible they were, how they've never loved me, how they are probably relieved they finally had the chance to get rid of me. I wanted to ask them where they possibly thought I would go? I wanted to tell them they were dooming me to a life on the streets, begging for whatever money people could spare just so I could eat.

But none of that came.

Glancing around I noticed the mixture of shock and fear on people's faces. The guards stationed against the wall were clutching their weapons, raising them slowly. They were yelling at me, giving me instructions, but their words seemed muffled as though the room had suddenly been plunged under water. I looked back to my parents. They seemed scared, but it was clear their minds were made up. There was nothing I could do or say that would change my fate. I stood up slowly, my hands raised as the guards' circled around us. They quickly pushed me against the table, pulling my arms behind my back and slapping on cold handcuffs. I never broke eye contact with my mom, though her eyes were now filled with tears.

"Honey, I'm sorry." She gasped, grabbing my dad's hand.

As the guards pulled me away from the table I gave them one last look and finally said; "Fuck you!"

I switch the T.V off with a sigh, frowning at the blank screen in annoyance. They could at least use a better photo of me. With another sigh, I place the remote on the soft, blue couch and return to the dining room. There the family whom this house belongs to were waiting. They stared at the plates of food in front of them, their faces slack and their eyes glazed over. I fell into an empty chair and smiled at them.
"Right, where were we?"
