I could tell that Bren had no idea what to say. It was cute but at the moment
we didn’t really have time. I walked us to a street vendor who was selling food
and clothes in their stall. It looked like they raised the prices really high for
in-humans. Letting out a sigh I give the vendor my money. This was
ridiculous being treated like filth. The main city had always made the rules
for how to treat people or in-humans. Bren looked to a small raccoon girl
being beaten in the street. No one was helping her as her master was calling
her foul words hitting her with his cane.
“Don’t...I know you want to help but it will make it worse.”
His ruby red eyes looked to the ground with such pain. Seeing how he had
been in the wild it was probably a shock to see the poor girl getting hurt. I
pull him into my arms trying to comfort him. His long jagged brown hair
tickled my nose as I kissed his head.
The man finally stopped beating the child to look at us smirking. Bren
tightened his grip around my body. If it wasn’t for us needing to lay low he
would pay for that. The man walked off just leaving the small girl there. I let
go of Bren walking over. She was barely breathing.
“It will be alright little racoon.”
She looked up to me with a faint smile that had never left her lips while being
beaten. The emptiness in her eyes was like nothing I’d ever seen. Bren leans
down putting the child in his arms.
“Are we allowed to take her?”
His face was pleading with me to say yes.
“To be honest there is no rule saying if someone is left for dead you can’t.”
Those words seemed to help him feel more at ease. How in the hell did I
manage to get a boy and girl now? I couldn’t understand why I even wanted
more responsibilities at a time like now.
“Let’s get going. We can take her to the slums doctor. If we try for a more crowed area they will refuse to see us.”
I stand up starting to walk towards the slums while Bren followed close
behind carrying the girl.
“Are you sure you can take care of them? You just awakened yourself not long ago.”
Oh great the voice was talking to me once more. I didn’t care but couldn’t just
leave them. If I did it would haunt me. I stopped when hearing the girl
coughing. She seemed to be trying to move slightly in Bren’s arms.
“Don’t move girl...unless you want to hurt even more. We are taking you to get treated.”
She stopped closing her eyes just laying still. Great I almost felt like a bully
but she was badly hurt. Approaching the slums I could see all the humans and
in-humans who lived there. It looked almost like a 20th century living area.
The streets were in very poor condition as we walked to their only source of
medical care. It was a run down looking clinic that had about a dozen cats
outside meowing.
“What the fuck is with all the damn cats?”
Maybe I was just annoyed because of the wolf in me. Slowly pushing the door
open a wave of smoke hits my face. Great so the doctor was going to kill us
with smoke instead of doing their job.
Bren walked in behind me as a man looked up dropping his cigarette almost
into his lap. It was actually funny seeing him jump to put it out.
“What the fucking hell happened to that girl?”
The man didn’t wait anytime at least he was concerned. Bren places her
down on the medical table in front of the man.
“Her previous master beat her in the street then left her to die. Do what
you can to treat her. I will pay you.”
The man let out a heavy sigh as starting to work on the raccoon girl. Taking
Bren’s hand I make him sit down in the waiting room with me. He kept
glancing over at the doctors room then back to me.
“Calm down she will be alright. It will be a while before he is done with her.
You don’t know this but even the slums have amazing medical treatments.
His machines will heal her eternal bleeding. The thing that will most likely
cause more trouble is her mind. She has been raised to be a slave, her only
goal was to serve her master. Now that he has left her to die it will be
hard.”
Just hearing my explanation seemed to calm him down immensely.
The doctor comes out after Bren has fallen asleep.
“She will be fine at least mostly. What ever her owner did to her had to be
horrible. That child is broken beyond anything I’ve seen in thirty years.”
As I stand up he places a hand on my shoulder.
“I don’t know why you gave a shit about these kids but thanks. Not many
would even bat an eyelid in their direction.”
His words hit me hard. It wasn’t since I was moved but since I’d been the
same once upon a time. I’d have just kept walking like it was something
normal. That is when it hit me we needed to change everything. What
happened in our history that caused humans and in-humans to become this way.
It was something that I planned on finding out. As I enter the recovery room
the girl turned her head gazing at me. She had such blank purple eyes. I
wonder if she even had a name. When I was a child I remembered that most
slaves were given numbers instead so they could be demeaned more. The
raccoon girl layed there as I sat down beside her.
“Do you have a name?”
Her eyes seem to widen at my question. Was it that shocking to her.
“No. I am 246.”
Wow they had a lot of slaves if that was her number. Well I already gave Bren
my last name why not try naming this girl as well.
“How about we name you Kibo Mae? Kibo means hope.”
When I glanced down at the girl she was crying but her smile was a genuine
one. For a moment I’m at a complete lost for words. There she lay crying
with such a sweet genuine smile it was so surreal from her smile before
coming here.
“I..I..can really have that name?”
The girl had sat up in the bed looking to me almost pleading.
“Yes it will be your name from now on. I am Lain Mae and the young man
who carried you is Bren Mae. We are now family.”
I gave her a kind smile seeing that it was so shocking to her. Before I could
even move she had tackled me in a hug.
“Hey! you might be better but you still need to take it easy Kibo. You had
been hurt really badly.”
She shook her head into my chest crying just clinging onto me. This poor
child was trying so hard just like Bren. It hurt to see them in so much pain.
My few acts of kindness touched them so deeply that it even had me moved. I
never imagined that just a few kind words could make such a difference to
anyone.
The doctor walks into the room looking at me holding Kibo. I could actully
see a smile on his rugged face. Was I really making that much of a difference
just trying to retain who I was. In the time since I had awakened my views on
the world changed with me. It wasn’t odd to be nice before but now it
appeared to be I’m becoming more compassionate. Did my awakening make
me want to touch out to others who felt pain? Either way it was nice just
knowing that the girl was going to be fine.
“Miss Lain if I heard correctly right?”
The doctor had walked over to us.
“Yes that is my name.”
He helped Kibo back into the bed since she had fallen asleep already from
crying.
“I don’t want money. I just want an honest answer is all.”
Oh, he was really different it seemed. I had always been taught the slum
doctors would jump for money.
“What is it you want to know?”
He pushed his Grey hair from his forehead then lit a cigarette.
“Your the wolf that had destroyed Zada city am I correct? Don’t worry if
you are I am not turning you in or anything.”
My eyes open wide in disbelief of the question. I fidget with the leather of my
shirt some trying to think how to answer him. Letting out a sigh I look to his
eyes.
“Um..yeah that was me.”
A smile came to his lips as he kept watching me.
“I thought so. Your hair is still slightly blonde as your eyes have changed
all the way to striking silver. You must have been hidden extremely well to
survive in that place. I know that city will not even allow outside in-
humans. Once I went there and learned they bred theirs so they wouldn’t
need anymore”.
He had actually been to Zada that was for sure how he was speaking of it.
“Why are you not going to turn me into the Elders?”
He walked over placing a hand on my head.
“Calm down kid...I don’t give a shit about that. What matters is that you
saved a life today. When you changed for the first time there was no
helping what you went through. I’m sorry you had to deal with that.”
Wait was he trying to make me feel better about what had happened. It was
sweet of him but I couldn’t feel better. How many innocent people did I kill
that night or was it even longer till I had regained myself.
He let go of my head and went to check on Bren with me. This man was very
odd to say the least. I watched as he put a blanket over him then smiled to
me.
“I will not bite so stop checking me out.”
He laughed to himself walking over to me. Lifting my chin he placed his
forehead against mine. I could see his deep blue eyes sparkling in the light of
the room.
“I..um...”
What the hell I was acting like a school girl all of a sudden. When did I
become so bashful? I could feel the stubble of his beard against my face
before I knew it his lips had pressed against mine. What the hell was going
on? Was this doctor some kind of sexual deviant? For some reason I didn’t
pull back though. His kiss deepened as a faint red crossed my cheeks. Was I
really allowing a man who I knew nothing about kiss me? He pulled back with
a gentle smile.
“Sorry I couldn’t resist. You really are very alluring even if not in such an
outfit.”
I feel myself blushing even more then I already did.
Getting my composure back I step back a few steps.
“Do you do that with all your patients?”
His eye raised with slight amusement.
“No, you are the first to be honest.”
So I made him want to be a pervert. Oh..great just my luck. I hate to admit it
but he was good looking. The doctor looked to be in his mid forty’s with a
strong muscler build. Even though I knew he was much older. His grey hair
was shoulder length, his blue eyes still seemed to sparkle, his dark almost
caramel skin actually made him more tantalizing. How could a man who I
didn’t even know make me want to jump into bed with him from one damn
kiss. He could see the way I eyed him up and down which amused him a great
deal.
“Would you stop with that smile? I mean seriously who kisses someone
who they know destroyed an entire city. Are you trying to play with fire
Doc?”
He burst out laughing walking up while wrapping an arm around my waist.
“So what if I am trying to play with fire? I don’t think it would hurt either of us to have a little fun.”
I bite my lower lip trying not to picture him naked. Damn why does he have
to be so fucking appealing? Pushing him back slightly I look around to Bren
still sound asleep on the waiting room couch. The doctor takes my hand
pulling me into another room.
“Hey...”
He doesn’t give me time to say anything else.
His soft lips press passionately against my own. It sends shiver down my
spine as the kiss deepens. My body wants to give in while my head says what
the hell am I doing. He pulls back from the kiss while licking his lips.
“My name is Jason. Don’t even think of calling me Doc got it.”
I nod at him still a little stunned. Jason has my hands pinned above my head.
His eye are looking me up and down like he is a wolf instead of me. I can feel
myself not wanting to fight him. Was it because of my animal urge to feel
something right now? Either way it seemed I was at his mercy willingly.
