Outgroup is a story about growing up, being brave, sometimes math, and robots. Set in a world like our own plus 130 years, robots have gained sentience and are secretly building themselves with no clear motive. Obviously this is a cause of concern for humans–even the 12-year-old ones. Deadbeat moms, voice cracks, coming outs, robot takeovers, ends of friendships, and manslaughter make up the most dangerous, confusing, friggin’ sweet seventh grade year probably, like, ever. Romy, Vince, and Emil go through a lot, but I guess that’s just middle school.
