Sao sat down at his desk inside his small apartment. After tossing around his checkered hackie sack for a bit, he turned to his computer with a sigh.
“Might as well take a look,” he said, going to the website the other’d given him.
Twenty minutes of reading policies and rules, finally Sao was looking over how to make one. Pre-made appearances, pre-made models, make your own, pre-made personalities, clothing packages- they had it all!
Finally Sao settled on one. He read through the final confirmations to make sure.
“Height 5’ 4”, Build Average, Face Model One, Eyes Red, Hair Black and Red, Skin Soft Tan,” He paused and scrolled, “Age Appearance Nineteen, Personality: Shy, Devoted, Slightly Stubborn, Bit Picky, Not too pushy, Understanding…” He scrolled more, “Language English, and clothes package nine…”
“Looks good..” He said and hit to confirm. A few more minutes to press in his mailing address and then for his credit card and then the second year college student was satisfied with his order.
Bored and unsure what to do next, Sao just changed into his sweatpants and went to sleep while reading REPUNZEL.
In the morning, life was normal. Sao got up and dressed into black jeans, put on green shades after spiking and gelling his blond hair a bit, and pulled on a black dress shirt and buttoned it most of the way. He nodded and pulled on his jacket and left with his bookbag to class.
After a few boring lectures, a book seminar and a few hours working as a waiter, Sao walked back to his apartment. He stopped, seeing a young man dressed in a white dress to his knees and white pants with an umbrella over his head standing in front of his door.
Sao walked over and pushed past the one in white. “This is my apartment, you’re in the way.” He said.
“Um… Are you Mister Hishi?” asked the young man.
“One of ‘em.” Sao said, unlocking his door.
“Sao Hishi?”
“Yeah,” he said, turning to the other.
The one in white rummaged in his pocket and pulled out a yellow receipt. “This is for you.”
Sao took it, reading it over.
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW DREAM MACHINE!! WE REGRET TO SEND YOU A 900-SERIES, BUT HE IS FULLY UP-TO-DATE! PLEASE TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR MODEL!
Sao looked over the paper to the one in white. “You?”
“Me?”
“You’re the Dream Machine they sent me?”
The other nodded, “I am.”
Sao looked him over, handed him back the paper, turned and went into his apartment. As he slammed the door he said, “I wanted a girl.”
The one in white looked around unsure what to do. He knocked on the door after a moment.
“Go away.”
“But… You bought me.”
“Return yourself.” Sao said, “I want a girl!”
Michael, the brilliant timing he has, came walking up just then with a grocery bag. “Yo! Oh… Who are you?” He asked the Dream Machine.
“9-1-3,” the Dream Machine answered with a nod.
“…Did Sao buy you?”
“Yes.. But he won’t let me in.”
“I wanted a girl, dammit!” Sao shouted.
Michael pulled open the door, watching as Sao fell out and bounced around to regain his balance. “You idiot. The gender they send is random. Accept him.”
“No!” Sao shouted to Michael, “You tricked me! You told me to get one and I did and they send me not only a guy but an out-dated model as well!”
“Out-dated?” Michael looked to the machine.
“Yes…” The Dream Machine nodded, “I’m from the 900-Series.”
“Wow!! RARE!!!!” Michael’s jaw dropped. “You seriously don’t want him?” He asked Sao.
Sao took the grocery bag and began to look inside. “Nope. Take him.”
“Awsome! Lucky day!” Michael moved to hug the machine, who moved away with his bag in hand.
“No!” the machine shook his head, “I was bought by Mister Hishi!”
“Well… I am a Hishi.”
“Eh?”
“Michael Hishi,” Michael said with a smile. “So you can come with me.”
The machine looked to Sao and then to Michael. “You two look nothing alike.”
“Different mothers.” Sao said, pulling out a can of vegetables. “Hmm I could make curry with this.”
“You seriously don’t want him, Sao?” Michael asked.
Sao shook his head, “I bought it wanting a girl, but I get a boy instead. I have no interest in men.”
“We are meant to be companions!” The machine said with a frown. “Please accept me!”
“And when I fall in love with a girl I can return you?” Sao asked.
The machine looked down, “No… But… I was made to be with you!”
“You’re lying.” Sao said, putting the food in his hand back into the bag. “You were made years ago, before I even ordered you. You were only just now changed to be my match.” Sao turned to Michael, “Take him, brother. I don’t want a boy. They’re annoying.”
And with that, Sao turned back into his apartment and slammed the door shut, locking it. Michael sighed, looking to the machine. The machine was just looking sadly at the door.
“You could return yourself, you know?”
The machine nodded slightly, “But I don’t want to… If I go back once more, I’ll be disassembled.”
“Huh?”
“I’ve been returned four times already.” The machine explained, “After we’re returned for the fifth time- we’re disassembled and our parts are given to newer machines or discarded.”
Michael scratched his hair, “Well… You can’t wait here… Want to come back to my apartment?”
“Huh?”
“I live a floor up from him.” Michael said.
