92. INT. LOUNGE CAR - SAME TIME
Claude watches from the far end of the carriage, his eyes scanning. He stands.
INSPECTOR CLAUDE: Toutes les personnes.
Everyone looks to him.
Subtitle: "I need to be honest with everyone. Because we might be here for a little while longer."
He gestures to Ratchett.
INSPECTOR CLAUDE: L'Américain n'a rien trouvé.
TRANSLATIONS are passed around.
Two women, their WIVES, stand.
PASSENGER #2 WIFE: Gdzie jest mój mąż?
Subtitle: "Where is my husband?"
SIMPLON PASSENGER #4 WIFE: Then where’s my husband?
Claude takes in a breath.
Subtitle: "They’re not making sure we’re safe outside. They...the group was ambushed."
TRANSLATIONS are passed around again. Everyone is at attention, ready to stand.
SIMPLON PASSENGER #4 WIFE: Monsieur, where is my husband?
Claude doesn’t answer. The two wives recoil in sadness from the news.
ABIGALE (Angry): Claude, why would you keep this from us? What good does that do?
Subtitle: "Because the conductor might not be coming back!"
And SILENCE falls again.
Subtitle: "The American and his group nearly died from being attacked by wolves. Maybe the same wolves that attacked us two days ago."
93. EXT. THE WRECK - SAME TIME
Claude’s silhouette stands at the end of the car.
Subtitle: "We can’t take any more risks! We have to stay together in order to make it out of here."
94. INT. LOUNGE CAR - SAME TIME
A long pause, as if the people are taking in what Claude’s said.
WOMAN: Ajuda não está vindo?
Subtitle: "Help isn’t coming?"
People begin standing. Voices begin OVERLAPPING.
SIMPLON PASSENGER #4 WIFE (Overlapping): Why would you not tell me that my husband was dead? Why would you keep that from me?
A CRESCENDO of angry, upset, and scared voices stops Claude from speaking. Several angry passengers surround him, while those who are more frantic begin panicking.
Gabriel and Abigale stay to the far end of the carriage, away from the tension. Ratchett watches from his chair, looking uninterested.
A panicked passenger throws themselves from the windows. She lands in the mud and runs, with others follow.
Three more passengers launch from the carriage windows and run into the forest.
INSPECTOR CLAUDE: Reste dans la calèche!
RATCHETT: Let them go.
INSPECTOR CLAUDE: Proposez-vous -
RATCHETT: They’re not gonna listen to you anymore. If they want to run, let ’em. This is their bad decision.
Claude loops at the remaining passengers - Abigale, Jasper, Susan, Gabriel, Ratchett, the Woman and her two children, Simplon Passenger #4 Wife, and a handful of others.
The total is seventeen, including himself. Earlier that morning, it had been twenty-six.
Claude watches the running passengers disappear into the thick woods, a pained look on his face. He turns back to everyone.
INSPECTOR CLAUDE (Softly): Why did you all stay?
The recipients to the question wait for the others to answer.
RATCHETT: Because I want to live. And you’ve done a decent job keeping us safe so far.
Ratchett’s answer is approved of by the others around them.
RATCHETT: We’re still here because we want to live.
Claude smiles.
95. EXT. THE WRECK - SAME TIME
PAN: SLOWLY BACK FROM THE WRECK.
96. EXT. TOWN - EIGHT THIRTY IN THE MORNING
The white facade of the Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske.
97. INT. THE SIEMENS & HALSKE TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION COMPANY RECEPTION - SAME TIME
Almost everyone in Bellanger’s group is SHOUTING at the CLERK behind the counter. It’s an awful mish-mosh of SCREAMING un-understandable dialects.
98. EXT. THE WRECK - SAME TIME
A wolf trots towards the lounge car, away from the occupant’s eyes. It sniffs, slow and deliberate, as if it’s looking for something. The wolf finds its way under the body of the carriage, and walks away.
99. INT. THE SIEMENS & HALSKE TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION COMPANY RECEPTION - SAME TIME
BELLANGER (Shouting, overlapping): No, non capisci.
The door to an office opens, and out steps the BOSS, a man with a soggy cigarette hanging from his lips and wearing a greasy, crumpled shirt.
BOSS (Shouting): Che cosa sta succedendo qui!
Bellanger’s party SPEAK in unison again, LOUDLY.
BOSS (Shouting): Vaffanculo.
A beat.
BOSS: Cos'è questo?
CLERK: Non hanno soldi.
BELLANGER (Overlapping): Vaffanculo! Le persone stanno morendo in questo momento!
PASSENGER #5 (Overlapping): Cele două trenuri s-au prăbușit. Avem nevoie de ajutor imediat!
BOSS: Sta morendo? Che cosa?
PASSENGER #5: Trenurile noastre s-au prăbușit.
100. EXT. THE WRECK - SAME TIME
The sounds of nature are prominent. The light is fading.
Three wolves circle the wheels of the carriage before climbing up the steps into the far end of the lounge car.
A very. Long. Pause.
ABIGALE (Screaming): Claude!
101. INT. THE SIEMENS & HALSKE TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION COMPANY RECEPTION - SAME TIME
Everyone watches with bated breath as Boss receives a message from the telegraph.
He comes back to the reception with the message in hand.
Subtitle: "There’s been a train dispatched from Arona. It’ll be here in about an hour."
PASSENGER #5: Slava Domnului.
BELLANGER: Può venire prima?
Subtitle: "Can it come sooner?"
Subtitle: "I’m sorry, I don’t have that power. But I told them it was an emergency."
Bellanger sighs, and walks out of the room.
