When the saying goes ‘It’s harder than it looks’ was right. Heather has been going to tons of places outside of town, asking if there’s any job available. Even though most of them let him in but he always ends up getting rejected by many just because he doesn’t have the experience or enough qualification for the work. Even fast food restaurants apologize for not being able to help him as the current positions they have has already been filled. Since Summer vacation has started not to long ago, all the jobs are currently occupied by high school students or college students. Like it or not Heather has to continue his journey to find a job while feeling disappointed for not taking a driver license. As the restaurant he went in earlier told him that the only position they currently need to fill is the delivery guy.
“What should I do?” Heather rustle his hair, sighing deeply. “The money I save is enough to last for a few days.”
When he still lives in the orphanage, Heather did lots of odd jobs in the neighborhood like taking care of people pets or deliver goods from the bakery store. Most of the money he has, has already been used to buy foods or clothes for the orphanage. Since they don’t receive that much donation in the first place, the people who usually work there are volunteers. And Madam Valentine will try to earn extra by becoming a seamstress to pay for the bills and taxes. Often time the orphan kids will help the madam as a sign of gratitude for taking care of them.
If he knows that he will end up like this he would have save some for more important matters. Sadly, it is too late to regret it now. With determination, Heather stand up straight with head up high to search for any opening in store. It doesn't matter whether it is a part time of full-time job. As long it is enough to put a roof over his head and fill his tummy with some snacks.
"Yosh! Let's do this!" As soon as he raises his fist up high, Heather suddenly remember that he is still in the public place. So, there are few people who are starting to give him an odd stare for his sudden scene.
Embarrassed by the situation, in a hurry he gives an apologetic bow before leaving the place.
"I can't believe I scream like that."
Maybe he should start getting more aware of his surrounding as he always tends to get lost in his own thoughts. As he continues to walk, he unconsciously enters an empty alleyway when making a right turn to get away from the crowd. Normally people would avoid this place as it gives out a bad vibe. Thoughts of getting rob, murder or rape will always cross the mind of people when encounter such place. Heather didn't notice it or he just didn't mind since he is too focus on his current objective.
Later on, his feet start leading him to a certain direction. As if he has been here before, like a force wrapping around his body to take him to the place it wants. Half an hour later, Heather now stands in front of an old place. This small shops looks like an antique shop when he gives a closer look. The sign says it is a 'bookstore'. 'Feit Bookstore' is the name, crave in a beautiful stroke that looks captivating at first sight. Slowly his hand come to reach the door handle, pushing it open. The bell attaches to the door rings, signaling a customer has arrived.
Taking a good look inside, Heather gone speechless to see how huge the place is. From the outside, it seems like a small bookstore but in the inside the books are all filled in their respective shelves from the ground to the upper floor. Looking up, he can't tell how many floors there are. It's endless.
"Welcome to my humble store, is there anything I could help you?" A man appears, stroking long white beard as he looks up at him. It is hard to tell if the old man is actually looking at him as his eyes seems close behind those huge round glasses he wears. Judging by his appearance and clothes, Heather predict him as a man in his 70th.
"Hello sir, I'm Heather Spring from Holly Orphan and I'm wondering if you have any job here that I could take." Heather asks politely, truly wish that this store is the one he has been looking for.
The elderly looks at him up and down as he continues to stroke his beard before turning around with his back facing him.
"Pick any book to your liking but only choose one." Said he as he walks away to the corner of the room where the small chair is.
Confused, Heather try to explain. "Um, sir. I here to find a job not to buy a book."
"Young man." He finally speaks after sitting down. "Those who come here are always brought by fate. And the book that is waiting for you is currently sitting there in one of the shelves. Find it and may you find your purpose of being here."
"My purpose?"
The man didn't say any more words and just sit, staring into space. Seeing that he will not get any reply, Heather looks around the store. Still bewilder by the amount of book there is. When the old man said to find a book, how should he know which book he has to find. Taking his time, as if the time has stopped, he walks pass by many of the books. Taking a good look on each of them to see which that attracts his attention. Not all of the book is the same as there are cover made by paper or leather. There are thick and thin, Small and huge. But what shock him the most is that none of them has any title printed at the side, not even the name of the author. This is a very strange bookstore.
After finding none took his eyes away, Heather heads to the upper floor. And continue to do so, letting his six sense to tell him when to stop. When he did, he can't tell what floor he is on now. When he looks down, Heather could tell he has to be on a very high floor as the figure of the elderly is getting very small like an ant in his eyes now.
"Let's see."
Reaching his hand out, he traces the edges of the book before he stops and take one out of the shelf. Blowing off the dust, he opens up the first page and starts reading. Taking a seat on the floor as he leans his back on the wooden shelf, his lips open up and starts reading out the words in a whisper like a prayer.
