When I awoke the next morning, I felt strange. There was an air of melancholy to the hotel, and even after I took a bath I felt strange. I went downstairs to see what had happened, and then I saw.
Claire's older sister had died.
From the talk I heard spreading around the hall, she had went to bed normally, and when they went upstairs to get her, she had been soaked in her own blood, and her eyes had been dug out of their sockets.
The next thing I heard was strange.
"What if it was Lady Jennifer? I mean, we all know about her curse, and she had come in with the family. It's not impossible. Besides, the whole thing seems suspicious. I mean, she showed up here off the streets yesterday, not knowing the place existed, and then the next day someone's dead. Someone from the family she walked in with." a stranger was saying not-so-quietly to one of their friends.
So, I'm getting blamed for this? I didn't even talk to Claire's older sister!
"Silence!" yelled Charles. "I know that this is a sad time, but let's keep some sense. Lady Jennifer would never do anything like this, and that was what I heard circling around the hall. I want everyone to remain calm. Armistice Arcane will be on lock down until we find the culprit of the murderer. Sentinel Rosa Marie Collins and Sentinel-"
At this point I stopped listening. I had read about the sentinels. They were against this place! Why were there two here, then, if they are against the supernatural? And why didn't Rosa Marie tell me she was a sentinel? I can't trust anyone here anymore. Cecilia and Claire are the only people I can put any faith in, and I don't even know if I can with Cecilia! And Claire's what, five years of age? I can't just spill everything to her, she'll tell her parents! Plus, she just lost a sister, and it's circling around that I did it. She probably won't trust me now, anyways.
I walk up to Charles, Kiara, and Claire. "I'm so sorry for your loss. I didn't do it, I swear on my life. I don't know who did, but I will help find out who and why they did anything like this. Again, I give my full sorrow, Lady Kiara and Sir Charles. Lady Claire, I'm sorry that you lost your sister. I'm going to do everything in my power to avenge her, okay?" I say, crouching down to be eye level with Claire.
"Y-yeah." she said, sobbing. She walked clumsily over to her mom, who picked her up, tear streaks on her face from recent crying.
"We have to stay strong in times like these, otherwise who will? Claire, do you want to go and play dolls in your room? Come on." and Kiara carried away a young Claire, screaming to stay in the room with her sissy.
"NO! SISSY! STOP IT! NO! I WANT MY SISSY! NO!" she screamed, and then the doors shut. Everyone went and sat at their tables, and I left the room immediately, having no appetite.
When I went to the library, I found Rosa Marie there.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked.
"What?" Rosa Marie said back, not looking up from her book.
"That you're a sentinel! That's what! Sentinels tried to kill me years ago." I said, surprised that I had my memories back. "If I remember right, there was a little girl, about my age at the time, following them, cheering them on!"
"Okay, Jennifer. Listen to what I have to say now." she said as she stood up, agitated. "I was seven at the time, and didn't know who it was, first. Second, I come from a long line of sentinels, and I can't give up my post. They'll kill me if I do. The reason I didn't tell you is exactly this! You overreacted. I want nothing to do with you, Jennifer Glover. Nothing to do with you or your snobby attitude!" Rosa Marie slammed her book shut, and stormed out of the room, her black dress billowing behind her. Every tick of the clock was heard over my heavy, aggravated breathing.
I stormed back to my room, and as I passed people who had also decided not to have breakfast, I saw them whisper and point at me, leaning in closer to their friends so I don't hear whatever rude thing is being said about me.
Great. Exactly what I needed.
I knew I would have been better off on the streets.
