King Nabonidus was quite unpopular.
Apparently, he wasn't even related to the royal family, and became king by joining with the nobles and killing the current king, who was still a child and had 'ruled' only for six months.
Also, while his reign lasted 17 years, 10 of those were spent outside doing... stuff. Meanwhile, his eldest son Belshazzar ruled as a regent until he came back.
