Life is essentially a dream. In order to make the pain stop, in one of his vivid dreams Axel accepts the deal with a familiar figure, it grabs his heart with both hands and separates it. One half leaves it caught and the other releases it in the sky so that it becomes a star. The figure tells Axel that only when he really needs it, should he reach that star and thus meet again with this figure.
