"I can't stand this place." Emmett complained, hugging an arm around himself, trying to ward off what little of the sharp wind he could. He may have been clothed from neck to ankle in black fabric but it didn't mean he was warm.
"Then why let him drag you out here?" His assistant asked. He was looking comfortable enough in a light jacket and Emmett envied him for it.
Emmett lit a cigarette, sighing with impatience. They were standing in the heart of the city. Despite the late time of year the fountain was still tourist trap central. People were milling about waiting for the next display.
Ignoring the question he complained once more.
"If that fountain winds up in a shot I'm leaving. I don't care that he paid me." With that the water display started up, the fine mist making him shiver as it reached them.
"I'm not late, am I?" The kid called out, jogging up behind them. He was dragging a large suitcase behind him, a brightly colored hoodie flapping off of his shoulder. Emmett tried not to look at it. Scene fashion? What a child. He hoped again that the kid was of an appropriate age.
"You are and I've already used up some of my film while waiting for you." Emmett lazily held his camera up to his face, snapping a couple pictures in the kid's general direction.
"What? No, give me a second!" He cried as Emmett flashed a few more.
"It's a digital camera. He's just messing with you." His assistant chimed.
Emmett scowled over at the man. "I don't really need you here. I can send you home without pay."
He ignored Emmett's threats. "I'm Jonas. I hope this'll be a fun shoot."
Traitor!
"I'm Tab. I hope it will be too."
Emmett lit another cigarette. "Let's just get this started. What did you have in mind?"
Tab's eyes lit up at the opportunity. "Well, the line that I'm trying to start is called Wolf Pack. It's mostly just bright stuff I screen print myself at the moment but I'm hoping to get a printer after the shoot.
The mood is just, fun, urban and colorful street fashion. So I was thinking of using the fountain as a backdrop-"
"Denied."
"What, why?"
"'Cause it's boring." Emmett puffed out a full cloud of smoke as he pulled the cigarette from his mouth to point at the crowd. "As colorful as your line might be it's not gonna stand a chance against that mishmash of background characters. They're all gonna start staring when the camera starts clicking. They're gonna get in the way and if there happens to be something close that you want to try again we can't grab the same people."
"But candid and spontaneous is kinda what I was going for."
"Candid photography has its place, just not in commercial work. You may as well just give me a refund." Emmett shook his head, flipping through his camera roll to start deleting photos. "It just doesn't fit."
"That's not what you said last night."
Jonas gave a snort of laughter at the kid's comment, hurriedly hiding a grin behind his hand. "Wow, did you fuck this kid or something?"
Tab grinned at Jonas, looking proud.
Emmett bit his lip against his first, second and third comment. He shook his head again, giving a humorless laugh and flicking the ash from the end of his cigarette. "Fuck you." He raised his middle finger as he turned away, making sure the message rang loud and clear.
