Greer looked around at the diner she had been taken to. It was a nice enough little place, looked like it'd be on one of those diner shows where the host swears they have the best something random like milkshakes or fries. She ordered a special, not wanting to spend more of the kind Doctor's money than needed, and looked to him. "So you wanted to know why I say it's a mistake sir?"
Satoshi, himself only ordered a coffee. Lucius had sent him with a large lunch today and as usual he had been so busy that he had eaten late. "I can't say I'm not curious about that..."
Greer pulled out what had to be a 50 page document from her backpack, it was highlighted and had notes all over it. "It's a real mess is what it is. A bunch of confirmation bias in play. I never turned in anything, or my parents.... they didn't sign off on anything until I was 16. That’s when the robber came the same time the eval guy showed up..." The packet was page after page of documentation from people in her hometown giving anecdotes about her good luck, put in a timeline order rather than order of the reports being made. The first one being when she was born and barely surviving being strangled by her own umbilical cord.
"That does seem to be a lot of evidence against your claims. But that doesn't explain why you think it's incorrect. Usually a lot of research goes into a person before their citizen status is changed."
"Because I was only lucky really a couple of times. Like..." She flipped the the second claiming her being present at her father's shop consistently brought in more work for him those days, or higher paying jobs. "They acted like I was only there sometimes. I loved my dad's shop and was there every damn day. Some days we're dead and dad would show me how to use the tools. Some days no one saw me because I was doing homework in the back, or wasn't feeling good and was resting on the backroom couch. Dad got more work because he worked his ass off." She looked very frustrated. "And that's just one example... They have stuff in here like me being the only one to get an A on surprise tests when I had been getting tutored, or catching the foul ball at games when I tried... well I'm tall and got long arms! Or getting good mystery bags or raffles.... it's not even like I won them all the time or anything!" She sighed. "What was the nail in the coffin was what happened when the eval guy came... I think he came just because everyone hassled him ya know?"
Sato looked over the pages carefully. This was the exact reason why agents in the field were supposed to eliminate any and all doubt before hand. The way she spoke however, he didn’t think she was lying on purpose. "Hmm... I mean, it could be a developing ability. Those tend to wax and wane on their own... But you still didn't answer my question. You told me why you don't want it to be true; people discredit the hard work put in by those around you. What proof do you have that there isn't something there?"
Greer put her head on the table. "It's the same conversation every damn time... Look what proof do you have that something IS there? You have the reports that I can show have confirmation bias on them! Why did I have a tutor? I was failing the class before then so once I caught up, the tutor started making me work ahead when possible so I could keep from failing again. Eval guy comes and I go to show him it's all fake and instead I trip and a hammer stops the robber that knocked my dad out. I have no physical signs. There is no consistent factor of something I did or was thinking during any of the 'lucky power' moments... just normal life and a few dumb luck moments."
That was interesting. All with powers had a glow in their eyes when the abilities were activated. Parents would notice but not sure what to make of it, if no one ever reported seeing a glow… "I'm not saying you're wrong. We'll just have to find some way to disprove the evaluation, which can be tricky considering the nature of the supposed ability..... Are either of your parents power presenting?"
"That's the thing! No one has had powers in my family. None of my cousins, aunts and uncles... I supposedly had a Great- Great- Great- Great- grandmother that could float like an inch, but that's it." Greer felt ready to cry. She finally had the attention of SOMEONE with the government that could help but seemed to be getting nowhere. "This is hopeless isn't it? I lost my last job because it was that or they were going to let the customers 'report' me for 'using my powers' to drum up more business..." Sato appeared confused, so she continued. "I worked a collision repair place... construction started nearby and a roundabout was put in elsewhere... so you can imagine how the accidents increased cause dumb people..."
Sato was annoyed, to say the least, but not with Greer. "Well, then this is lazy work on all fronts. The evaluation expert might be excused for not being more through due to the grandma thing. Ancestors with powers is one sign since sometimes it skips some generations. But there still should have been more research done before registering you. Not to mention, any determination or records on if you have abilities is not supposed to be public knowledge unless you have committed a crime and deemed a danger to society. Whoever leaked those records could lose their job for it."
She groaned. "An old classmate of mine brought their wrecked car in.... started yelling and asking if I did it... then the boss heard. Boss got confirmation from somewhere and then asked if I was trying to get him sued bringing in 'business like that'.... and I was asked to leave... I just... I wasn't even doing anything! They hired me BECAUSE they were getting busier! And the grandma wasn't even registered... it's just a family story." She looked at her food, picking at it a bit. "I know I don't have powers... it's just normal person dumb luck... but no one will listen to revoke it... they keep saying it was proven... I can't even risk playing bingo cause if I win and someone finds out I have powers, could count as cheating or something..."
Sato leaned back a bit as the waitress delivered their meals. "I've got this roommate. He can change his appearance to anything. He uses it to get all kinds of modelling gigs, be whatever the customer wants him to look like. Do you consider that 'cheating'?"
Greer just looked at him, what kind of question was that? "Of course not. But it's not what I think is it? It's what everyone else thinks. You should know how jealous people get when they think you are just normal level lucky or whatever. Imagine if people thought you could command luck on a whim? And then that you wouldn't do it in THEIR favor?" She took a bite of her burger, letting that sink in. "People get nasty when they get jealous and want it to be 'fair'."
"Exactly. My point is you need to surround yourself with people who don't care if you have luck based powers or not. Like, maybe to start, don't work at a place that benefits from others' misfortune? Then people can't blame you for their bad luck when you have nothing to do with it." Sato started to tuck into his meal as they talked.
Greer sighed, waving the burger slightly as she talked. "But I love working on machines... and that involves... you know... working on them when they break. There's just something about... smoothing out the burrs, taking the dents out one at a time, slowly adding the lube to the stiff areas..." she sighed more happily this time, imagining doing the work.
Sato looked to this girl. He didn’t know her background but from the looks of things, he wasn’t sure what she was qualified for. "Why not work as maintenance at somewhere with machines, then? You would be working on them more than just when they break down and places are always looking for a talented person to maintain their tech. I could probably use my connections to find somewhere that's hiring if you want..."
She looked a moment. "...well that takes care of the job part but I don't have anywhere to live right now either..." Greer took another bite and looked to him. "You... aren't going to use this as some sort of weird proof I'm lucky are you?"
He did his best not to be offended. "I do not see how me having the human courtesy to help someone in need makes you 'lucky'. I am not some kind of monster."
Greer relaxed. "Great... then yeah. I'll take whatever help you can give. I'll do my best not to make you look bad or anything... A least for tonight though.... you said you might have a couch?"
