It was only an hour later when Greer was riding with Sato to her new job. She was looking over the paperwork and starting to fill it out as they went along the road. “So I guess I interview today… is it okay that I don’t have much in the way for nice clothes?”
Sato looked to her. “No, but I already did a background check on you and found your certifications. They are sufficient for the job opening we have. I’ve already recommended you and they decided that they will give you a chance. They’ll do the drug testing and confirm your paperwork and we will just streamline the process.”
Greer nodded a bit. “You weren’t kidding when you said you’d help me get the job, Dr. Holmes. Thanks.” She let out a breath. “This was a real lifesaver. I really was down to my literal last dollar… I don’t even have anything outside my backpack… except maybe some tools I sent home…”
At a stoplight, Sato took a side look at the backpack she brought with her. She was too nervous to leave it at the apartment. Understandable given her circumstances; but also made a strong case either way. Why would someone with luck abilities be so down on their luck? Then again, he was there right when she needed him as well. This was what made luck abilities so hard to prove unless you caught the activation. Some luck users could activate their luck days in advance of what they needed. Regardless, he couldn’t imagine being down to so little.
“Don’t worry. You are obviously meticulous based on your case you put together. I’ve been reading through it and I’m going to research the evidence thoroughly. I’ll help you determine what is going on and get this entire thing settled.”
Greer’s eyes seemed to light up as she got back to filling out the paperwork. Just the normal way, not powered. Well, he had things all planned out… he’d get to the bottom of it one way or another. And with her working in his section, that would make things easy.

Greer had finished the paperwork, finished getting her assignments. Now she just had to set to work on the training videos. She went to where the manager had said the binders were and… they were missing. Of course they were missing. Did anyone ever put those things back? Seriously. Alright, it shouldn’t be hard. First things first, she proceeded start asking everyone who was hired last and what section they worked in. It took a few hours but she eventually found the guy that had the stuff.
He handed it over. “Yeah here ya go. You better go quick though, they normally like to do the quiz about 1 in the afternoon.”
Greer looked at the time, it was already 11:30 and she had five binders and 2 dvd’s to go through. Alright, she could handle this. Sato came by at noon to see her reading and watching videos and taking notes while she ate. He was impressed with how well she was doing. When it came time for the training quiz, she passed just fine.
Greer smiled. “Great! So, who am I partnered with?”
The lead, David, looked at her oddly. “What are you talking about?”
“A mentor or trainer…? I’m… not getting one am I?”
He shook his head. “No, the Doc said you should be able to handle it and we are really short handed right now.”
She nodded. “Right so my tools?”
He looked down the hall. “The last guy shoulda left them in the main closet. Here is your set of keys… mind the experiments alright? Check with the Doc on what he needs worked on first.”
Greer nodded and sighed; this was going to be a long afternoon. It took her until 3 to find an unclaimed set of tools and something to put them in. By the time she was done, she went to check Sato and get a ride back. She found a note stating he was in a meeting and to find a ride home. “Shiiiii- I thought this would happen….”
She rubbed her eyes and ran down the hall waving someone down. It didn’t take long to find someone who could drop her off just a few blocks away. At least it wasn’t too bad for a first day, and it mostly worked out. Now she needed to get back to the apartment and get cleaned up before the guys got home.
