Dewi just happened to arrive home only ten minutes later than her. "Babe, I'm home." He called out, putting his stuff on the kitchen counter before remembering that Blake is working for another 3 hours. That is when he noticed the girl that he only met in passing this morning. "Oh, hi. You're Greer, right?"
"Oh Hi, yes, nice to meet you." She extended her hand. "Greer Smith. Temporary roomie. Nice to properly meet you."
Dewi took her hand, but instead of shaking it, he brought it to his mouth and kissed it. "The pleasure is all mine. I'm Dewi, by the way."
She looked at him oddly and pulled her hand away. "Ummm excuse me.... we aren't dating. I'm pretty sure you are dating Blake and aren't all the guys in this apartment gay?" Her face was red, she obviously wasn't used to that sort of attention at all.
Dewi stood up straight, resting his hand on his chest. "I'm bi actually. But even if I was gay, that doesn't mean I can't greet a princess as such."
Greer made a mental note he was a schmoozer and cleared her throat. "Right well... I won't be around long I hope. With some hard work, I should be able to get an apartment of my own in about 2 months. Just started my new job with Dr. Holmes."
This was a bit of a surprise, but even people with a doctorate could fall on hard times."Oh, so you're a researcher. I could never do that, science was never my strong suit."
She blinked and then laughed. "Oh nonononono... I'm a mechanic! I used to work in a body shop.... I'm just there to fix the machines. Aw geez no... me a scientist? Oh god... Ohhhhh boy.... I never even went to college."
"Well, mechanic is pretty impressive too. All those moving parts.... I wouldn't be able to get my head around how they all fit together." Dewi scratched his head, remember the last time he took his car to the mechanic.
She shrugged. "Getting them together is the easy part. The hard part is how much lube. Too much, things slip out of place and it doesn't work. Too little and stuff grinds and wears out."
Dewi was really trying to understand what she meant, but was having trouble still. "So... like how I need to balance my appearance? If I look too plain, I won't stand out in the modeling industry, but if I go over the top, I'll stand out for all the wrong reasons....."
"Probably like that. I could think of other examples.... but it's not for polite company." She thought about some of the jokes her dad half killed his employees for making around her when she was younger. "But mostly it's like a big puzzle. Or a treasure hunt." Greer started setting up the couch so she could go to sleep quickly when everyone was done in the living room. She smiled at an old worn quilt from her bag. "Anyway, it's great." She stopped and blinked. "OH! You're that guy Dr Holmes told me about. He said good things about you."
Dewi blinked, this was a pleasant surprise. "Wow, Sato having good things to say about me..... I mean, I know he doesn't hate me, but other than with Luce he usually seems so neutral about anything not research related..."
Greer nodded "Well to me it was good. He said if you knew about the issues I had, you wouldn't be judgy about it. And that's really big to me right now... it's kinda why I'm in this spot."
He nodded solemnly, now a bit curious. "Yeah, judgy is kind of something we can't do here... We've all had issues. I mean, I’ve probably had more failed relationships than most people have shoes..... Luce had this one girl really mess him up mentally when we all first moved in together.... Blake has huge problems with anxiety.... and Sato.... Sato seems the most put together, but that might just be because he doesn't share his issues with others very often."
Dewi walked over to the TV and turned it on. "Hey, do you want to watch a movie? I've been craving Disney all day."
She looked to the TV. "hmmm Mulan please? I feel like butt kicking and sadly Gaston doesn't get punched in the face nearly enough." She moved her backpack aside. It looked like someone going on a camping trip the way it was packed.
Dewi nods and puts in the movie before sitting on one of the chairs. He notices her bag and decides to say something before the movie starts. "So, has Sato said anything about arranging a room for you? Because I don't think you'll enjoy being on the couch for a full two months. Some of our schedules can be really late or early, depending."
Greer shrugged. "I mean.... I'm cool with the couch. I promise I don't sleep naked or anything. And unless you are going to tell me you guys walk around naked or whatever... I mean. If you are worried about me messing up the couch I can sleep on the floor too." She hadn't really thought that far. It wasn't like she had any furniture anymore since losing her apartment.
"Oh, it's nothing like that, just figured you might like somewhere to stay where we won't accidentally wake you up. You know, somewhere to call your own, even if it's only for a little while."
Greer shrugged again. "I mean... is there enough room to put me somewhere here?"
"Wait, did Sato not tell you about all our powers? I assume he had since he invited you to stay and we don't really hide them while home....."
"Oh he told me you all have powers. You're the one that's a shapeshifter. And the reason Blake was confused when I got out of the shower." She looked up. "I mean I'm registered but I don't know if its worth telling you all about it because, really, it's wrong anyway... I don't have any."
"So he only told you about mine.... well let me give you some information on the youngest of our roommates. Sato can make more room. He creates pocket dimensions and he can set it up so others can access them."
Greer blinked. "...... he said I can sleep on the couch as long as I needed."
"No common sense....." Dewi sighed. "Please excuse my roommate's rude behavior.... He's really smart, but lacks awareness of some of the more human aspects of interacting with others. If Luce had known about all this last night, you would already have your own space...."
Greer looked. "Well I don't want to cause too much trouble or anything... I mean I'm sure Dr Holmes has a reason for not doing that. Besides it's not like I have any furniture left or anything. Dad has my tool set.... otherwise it's my bag there."
Dewi looks like he's going to argue when his phone goes off. He looks happy seeing who's calling. "Hello. Didn't expect you to call. Aren't you at work?" Whatever the reply, it causes his face to drop. "What happened, Cronos?" More talking from the other person. "What do you mean it wasn't recorded..... Okay, okay, I'm coming.... you're somewhere safe, right? .... Good. I'm on my way. Anything else you need? ... Okay. See you soon, Honey." Dewi hangs up and grabs a drink from the kitchen before turning to Greer. "So, something came up..... Do you want to meet my boyfriend, again?"
Greer looked and smirked. "Well do I have to be naked for it? ‘Cause we don't have the shower gel bottle handy"
Dewi laughed. "Well, I don't think the library patrons would appreciate that, I would love to see Cronos' face if you did. Though it's probably best we both wear clothes. Don't want to attract too much attention."
She thought a moment. "I need to go to the library anyway. I need to get a library card and some books on how to fix the machines I work on now..." She stood up and grabbed the backpack. "... wait your boyfriend is Blake."
"It's complicated.... I'll explain a bit on the way." Dewi stopped for a moment. "Oh, right, almost forgot...." Dewi closed his eyes, concentrating, as his appearance changes to a slightly older man with black hair and purple highlights. "Easier to do it before we leave."
Greer looked in amazement. "...You are officially the envy of everyone who does makeup everywhere you know that."
"Oh, I am quite aware..... Some of the people who know about my power think it's the only reason I get so many modelling jobs. No need for hours getting ready for a shoot when I can do it myself in an instant. Plus I can fit any type the client is looking for. But forget them, I'm so much more than my looks and the important thing is what I think about myself."
Greer looked and then looked down a bit. “Well, glad that works out at least right? No real downsides.”
Dewi looked a bit annoyed, assumptions and all that. "...'no downsides,' huh?.... Blake thought I was cheating on him with myself ... well, we weren't dating yet, but I hurt someone I care about, who I'd like to point out has massive confidence issues as it is, all because I was using this power. The boy already has anxiety attacks so bad that they could actually be harmful to him, and my powers indirectly caused it to get worse."
Now she was embarrassed. "Uh right... sorry. I shouldn't have assumed. Um.... the library right?" She was avoiding eye contact out of habit now.
"Yep, the library. My prince awaits." Dewi left, locking the door behind them, before going down the stairs to his car.
When Greer got in the car she started thinking about what she should tell him. Would it be better if she explained why his powers seemed lucky to her? Would it just seem like whining? Greer ended up getting into the car and sitting quietly.
The entire ten minute drive to the library was fairly silent, Dewi had forgotten his promise to explain things and was more focused on reaching their destination. Greer was too nervous to say anything else that might upset Dewi. Thus making this the most quiet and awkward silence to the library Greer had in her entire life.
