As Dewi walked into the library, he took a right towards the bathrooms. Going up to the door marked as the family bathroom, he knocked. "Cronos, Honey. It's me." The door opened a crack and before entering, he turned to see if Greer was still behind him. "Stay here. We'll be out in a minute."
Greer nodded and stood there for a moment, getting a few looks from people. "Heh.... friend in the bathroom... ya know..."
Soon the door opened again and out walked the two men. The one with purple highlights spoke first. “Thanks again for doing this…”
“It’s fine, that’s what I’m here for…. But remind me why you don’t just quit?”
“Blake’s so worried about contributing enough.” The shorter one nodded his head understandingly. It is only then that the older one noticed Greer. "You didn't tell me you brought Greer with you."
"Oh, yeah, by the way, Cronos... Greer came with me. She wants to get a library card and I offered to bring her to meet you."
Career was confused now. “Ummmm more shapeshifters?”
The older one grabbed the other one by the shoulder. "Oh, did my Dewdrop forget to tell you? I'm a time-traveler. High emotions causes my body to switch with itself from other times. I go by 'Cronos' when I'm like this. Nice to meet you again. Without the body wash this time."
Greer turned red. “Shoooot did my hitting Blake make... ummm....”
Cronos looked a bit surprised, before a look of realization showed up on his face. "What? No, that was like... hooouurrrsss ago. Some guy came in twenty minutes ago and started yelling at me for no reason. Wouldn't have been a problem except I've been cutting down on my medicated tea and haven't had any all week."
Greer nodded. “Geez if I had realized mighta been nicer to him about this morning... prob put him on edge.” She sighed. “So... future? Then you already know about my status?”
He eyed her knowingly, "You mean if you're still registered as a Luck based power user by my time? Maybe I know, maybe I don't. If I tell you it could change the results."
Greer nodded. "That makes sense. I've seen enough sci fi movies to know time travel is tricky..." She then realized that Dewi hadn't been told directly yet, and didn’t feel like going into it after the conversation earlier. "So uhh, right what all.... do we need to do then? Get some books and stuff for me..."
“Well, I guess I should go finish Blake’s shift." Dewi turned to Cronos. "You owe me a date for this as I’m guessing I’m probably double helping with this switch….”
Cronos looks guilty “Make it two dates….. We kind of were on one when I switched.” He then turned to Greer. "I can help you find anything you need and by then he," pointing to Dewi disguised as Blake "should be back on the clock and able to get you a library card to sign out what you want."
Greer nodded and let out a breath. "Right... let's go then." As she walked towards the non fiction section she sighed. "Great, was tying to figure out a good way to talk about the luck thing and I was stupid before we left... Well you already know.... Though I guess present you... doesn't know?"
Cronos shook his head, "I usually let him figure things out on his own. Well, other than the times I remember us switching. Those get recorded so he knows to be somewhere 'safe' when it happens. Can't have me showing up in the middle of the street."
She nodded, thinking about the whole time travel thing. "That makes sense. Even if you remembered it happening in the future, it would be a problem..."
Greer headed to the mechanical engineering section, she always loved this section of any library. Sure some of the books were outdated, but that just gave her ideas on how to work on older machines. "Ok.... the big question is if the books are reference or not... but I just need something similar to study." she chuckled. "You know... for a fancy place like that they can't keep track of half their manuals... good thing I have a good sense for machines."
"Hmm.... if I remember correctly," Cronos walked over to one of the selves "I remember you having this one, this one and... this one while staying with us." He pulled three seemingly random books off the shelf and handed them to Greer. "If you need anything other than that for your job, I'd recommend asking someone not associated with Sato. His department has no mind for maintenance work or where such things would be kept. I'm sure you'll find someone who knows what they're doing."
She nodded. "Probably. Scientist types are smart but when it comes to everyday things, stuff always gets lost... and... oh this one looks interesting..." She pulled off another book and noticed a sparkly something. She looked carefully and pulled out the ring. It was easily worth what would be her share of the rent the next few months if it was real.
And yet, she wasn’t thinking about that."Aw geez... bet some lady went on a diet recently and hadn't gotten this resized... Here, hold these I'm gonna go turn it in at the front desk." She shoved the books back to Cronos and walked to the desk to turn it in taking a few moments.
It didn’t take long for it to get sorted and the librarian to be assured Greer didn’t plan to leave contact information. At least Greer knew she had done a good deed for the day and was smiling on her way back to Cronos. "Alrighty... sorry about that..." She took the books back. "Couldn't leave that there... someone probably is missing it terribly."
Cronos looked away from her, as if remembering something. "Yeah, something like that.... Anyways, if that's everything, let's get you checked out."
"... so.... should I do something to make the you here feel better about this morning? Maybe some of that tea?" She thought. "If I wasn't low on cash, maybe I could get some cookies…”
He looked to Greer and smiled a bit. "You're acting like you're the one who has to make up for me walking in on you. If anything, it's either mine or Sato's fault."
"It totally is but I wouldn't have thrown anything if I had known about the anxiety... I woulda yelled 'not your boyfriend' or something..." She sighed. "Besides, I have to live with everyone for a month or two and I hit a nerve with Dewi... and threw a bottle at his boyfriend’s head today. I mean... He seems pretty cool but..." She looked to Cronos. "Dr. Holmes was so kind... he was being pretty selfless helping me get a job, and offering a space at his apartment. He didn't have to do all of that."
He put a hand on Greer’s shoulder. He obviously understood her concerns, but was trying to offer some comfort. "I don't know how you think you upset Dewi, but I can assure you that he's fine. We're all cool with you staying with us. There isn't one of us who hasn't had issues due to the outside world trying to put us down for being different. And none of us are going to turn our backs on someone going through their own struggles when we can help. I mean, Dewi is working my shift in a library and that isn't 'cause we're dating. He would do that even if we were only roommates, because he knows how important this job is to Blake."
She smiled a bit. "A whole herd of guys with a sense of decency and honor... and ya'll are gay. You know how to break a girls heart you know that?"
"I don't know about Sato and myself, but Dewi's had his own heart broken many times, by both guys and girls. And Luce..... my brother stopped trying for a long while. Both of them have a lot of love to give, but I guess the girls around them weren't ever willing to accept who they really are. I'm sure you'll eventually find someone who makes you feel like Dewi makes me feel, but all I can tell you is if you want to date a catch, you need to catch him before someone else does."
Greer nodded. "Yeah... just dunno if I'm in the mind frame right now... plus haven't seen an available guy" She smiled a bit. "But hey... someone for everyone..."
"Well, just some advice for when you get there. Everyone's got experiences that you wouldn't understand by just meeting them, so you don't know how helpful their advice will be until you use it."
She tilted her head to the side. "They have classes for time travelers to be that cryptic or did you learn that yourself?"
He grinned a bit at that before looking a bit more serious. "Practice. I have only answered all questions asked to me about the future once. I was forced to go against my will and it messed my brother up for years afterwards. Let's just say that's why my 'no future knowledge' rule is in place. Being cryptic helps me avoid unintentionally saying something I shouldn't."
Greer nodded a bit. "Course I wasn't asking you anything ya goof.I think you just want me to feel better." She smiled at him a bit. "and it worked.”
"Whatever helps you sleep at night.... I will neither confirm nor deny your statement." Chronos gave her a playful smile.
Once Greer got up to the counter she noticed Not-Blake-Dewi in front of her. "Hello, I need a library card and to check these books out please." She set everything down and started pulling out her wallet. "I'm sorta couch surfing, so if I can at least have a temp card..."
Dewi looked confused on what to do. Correctly guessing what the problem was, Cronos whispered "For the residency section just type in the code 8415. You should be able to fill in everything else normally."
It only took a few more moments after that. Greer had thought the code was odd, but maybe it related to being technically homeless? She tried not to sweat stuff like that. Once they got outside, however, she remembered something a bit important."...... He drove us here...."
Cronos held up a set of keys with a blue rose keychain. "Then it's a good thing I have his keys. Want to show me where he parked?"
She led him over to the car. "Um.... do I need to worry about you switching places while you drive? Should I drive for safety?"
He shook his head. "I'm good. If I was going to switch back so soon, I wouldn't have asked Dewi to cover for me."
She nodded and got into the car. "Right SO... we head back and eventually you switch back and I have a confused Blake... anything I should know to make his transition easier?"
Cronos considered saying something ridiculous, but knew Greer was inexperienced enough at this point to take him seriously. "Nah, I'm used to it, so we've got it down pretty well. He's not going to remember anything that happened while me but he can connect the dots. I can't think of anything you need to know.” he paused as he started to open the door before speaking up again. “Actually, there is one thing. Do not tell Luce about this. He'll freak out about it like usual and nobody wants a freaked out Luce.... It strengthens his powers."
Greer looked to him and then back out the car window. "Thank god I don't really have powers and this is all some kinda screw up. Powers just seem to make ya'll lives complicated…” Greer realized she might be offending again and quickly added, “Even if they do really help sometimes I'm sure."
"People make our lives complicated. Us having powers is just the excuse they use for doing it." He looked annoyed as he said it, trying not to look at Greer.
"Guess that's true enough..." She sighed. "At least I won't keep screwing up conversations like this for long. I'll be out of everyone's hair fast enough. I know there's a lot of positives to folks with powers but... after what's happened it's... hard for me to not be negative about it." She smiled a bit. "I guess if you remember me that well, must be because I stay at the job with Dr Holmes. So that's a nice thing. That or I was that memorable as a roomie." She looked at the books a moment. "I hope that lady gets her ring back.... think she'll think to check back there?"
He nodded, showing no emotion now. "I'm sure the owner of the ring will get it back. Kind of hard to think that something like that would stay unnoticed for long."
Greer nods a bit. "Yeah. It was pretty, though. That's for sure. Whoever picked it out has good taste."
"I still remember Ma telling me about the ring dad got and how she thought it was the most beautiful ring and she wanted Dad to have a matching one." She chuckled. "He almost told Ma he wasn't going to get a ring at all ‘cause he didn't want to lose it down an engine... said Mom half killed him over that... she's tiny but scary. But now that ring means everything to him..." Greer looked somber again. "I really hope the lady gets it back... something like that must mean the world to her."
"Engagement rings usually do.... If the owner likes the giver, they're sure to be happy to get it back."
"That's what I mean. Someone had that ring and was in a wonderful dating relationship, and given the ring as a sign of how they wanted to stay together. I know that's not for everyone... but it must have meant the world to her. The stone could be a fake for all we know... but she wouldn't care. I'm sure once she realizes she'll be frantic... and hopefully will remember where she was when she had it last."
Greer smiled at him. "One day, if you haven't already, I bet Dewi will be happy to get a ring from you. Question will be what style."
Now Cronos looked awkward. "We... um, actually went with tattoos. My clothes and accessories don't switch with me so we figured a physical ring might freak a younger version of me out. I did pick out a ring, but never gave it to him."
"That's a shame.... maybe one day you can change your mind about that. Maybe he can wear it as a necklace or something?"
Cronos nodded. “Yeah maybe. It’s a thought at least,” he said as they pulled in, “Meanwhile, why don’t you help with some chores while Luce is out. It shouldn’t be too bad. If I remember right, we had done a good cleaning a day before you got there. Lucky you!”
Greer physically winced at that comment.
