this is giving me such flashbacks to middle school, idk if I can even read it haha, I'm feeling so called out right now! You do a great job with capturing middle school pettiness and friendship in the dialog. And those book covers could have come from my own journals haha. I feel for Nichole so bad. During middle school my parents were also divorcing (a few years after my bio mom had died - so that was rough) and I was having night terrors. Interestingly, I thought I was being stalked by a shadow too. I remember writing it angry notes. I just wanted to sleep ;_;
