About a week later, Greer had gotten a bee in her bonnet about the emergency backup systems. She had found some logs and they were concerning to her at least. “They haven’t had a proper check in years, Mark!”
Her team lead sighed. “They do fine and the storms aren’t so bad around here. Just because a big storm is coming in… it’s not like it’s a hurricane or something.”
Greer sighed, rubbing her eyes. They itched whenever someone was being dumb like this. “I’m telling you, they are going to fail. And then all the lovely researchers are going to scream at us.”
Mark looked. “Greer, just do your section and the checks for today. And leave the other stuff alone- ok?”
She watched as he walked away. Mark was alright but she knew he was wrong this time. She looked at the stark contrast of bright blue and dark grey, a tidal wave of clouds heading towards them. No, she didn’t care. Sato had been telling her some of the research they did here. Some of it went over her head, but it sounded very important. Well, Mark can reprimanded her later. Some things were worth getting fired over.
Greer looked right at the security camera for a moment, she knew the system was going down, so she’d start in the research areas first.
The funny thing about maintenance is rarely does anyone question you are there. Say you’re checking the back ups and no one ever double checked. Greer was glad she was checking. Several of the main back ups for the various sectors had a damaged part or two. Not enough to be sure that certain things would shut down, but enough to cause worry. She kept meticulous records of everything she did. Either it’d prove they needed to change things or Mark would fire her. Either way, she’d feel good about it. Except for letting Dr. Holmes down. Still he seemed like…
A loud rumbling rocked her body. She looked to the window, it was right at 2 in the afternoon. Greer gathered up her tools and the broken parts and started to run over to Sato’s area. She had saved his until last because he had mini battery backups to his systems. Enough for 5 minutes, but he could still lose information. She just needed to go a bit faster, her long legs taking great strides. Greer barely remembered to apologize as she hurried down the hall nearly knocking people over.
She burst into Sato’s office and went to the panel in his lab. “Ms. Greer, you’re supposed to be checking the vents today… why are you-?”
“Storms coming! Power’s gonna go out lemme finish this then I’ll do the vents, promise!” She looked inside and his was the worst of all. There had been a flicker earlier, it must have had a small surge that took out some of this system. She quickly started switching out parts while Sato watched.
“I had no idea….”
The power went out and Greer looked up, grabbing her flashlight. “Don’t worry, Dr. Holmes. I got this.”
She looked to the part, seeing an almost green hue to it as she switched around the parts. She reactivated the backup and in moments the room was back up and running, just in time it seemed, as well. Greer plopped down and grinned. “Told everyone the power was going to go out… glad I did the checks.”
Sato nodded, showing no emotion like normal. “Of course. Good work. I’ll help smooth things over then after I finish some notes.” He turned and brought up file LKEG and proceeded to type up a few things. This was very interesting research indeed.
