She so desperately keeps herself in front of eyes to show them that she can help, that she can do something, and she can accomplish anything. But they look away because they never thought so, and it became true once she thought so too.
And then her heart became mechanical, to match the clockwork of every other cold, ticking, heart, in order to feel like she's worth anything.
