Sato had one last experiment to do in order to help Greer have a better understanding of her abilities. They still needed to know about long term use so he came up with the perfect experiment. All he had to figure out was if she could consistently use her luck to improve the performance of something without anything going wrong. So, he came back that evening with an old car from a lemon lot he knew of. Greer stood out there and was looking at it.
“Please tell me they paid you to take it away…” she said walking around looking at it. “I can probably fix it up good enough in a week or so if you get me the parts?”
Sato looked to Greer. “It drove back fine, and I’ll be happy to help with maintenance, but we thought you could have this car and fix it up. Something that is yours as I won’t be able to help you get to work the next few days.”
Greer looked at it and thought hard. As she did her eyes glowed again. “Hmmm… I can maybe make it through the end of the week… can you get me the parts by then?”
Sato nodded. “Certainly. Let me know if you have any problems before then.”
Greer nodded and sighed. Yeah… she could make it through the week. She just had to have a hope, a prayer, and some basic tools on hand.
The first day wasn’t so bad, although the car kept dying and she was late clocking in.
The second day, the car got stuck in traffic and took 30 minutes to fix it on the side of the road. This meant she was late by 30 minutes and was properly reprimanded and given a warning. Recommended by Sato or not, she didn’t get that much leeway. Greer even worked through her lunch to make sure she made up the time without being late getting home.
The last day was the big problem. Greer had been debating if she would just take the bus or an taxi or something. She didn’t want to make a big deal to Sato because he had been fairly generous getting her this car, but there were so many problems. Maybe she could talk to him about it at lunch today, let him know it wasn’t as safe as he thought. She could figure out how the phrase it during the morning so as not to seem ungrateful. Sadly, the drive was worse than before. The car’s engine was making loud noises, she could feel it rattle. But after being late the day before, Mark had told her she was on warning and could be suspended without pay. She let out a breath. “Please baby, come on, please baby just get us there safe and sound, please please please…”
There was a weird glare in her mirrors that she tired to ignore. She could see the parking lot and was trying to just pull into it. There was a small bang from the engine and she gave up parking close and just got into the first spot she could and turned off the engine. It was so far back there were no other cars there. The car suddenly dropped and she sighed.
“Ok… not bad, sorry for running you hard baby… we’ll get Sato to tow you… maybe there’s something I can do.”
As she carefully got up and headed to the front door. She had 10 minutes to spare, easy! There was that much at least. Once Greer was about halfway there she heard a large bang behind her. She didn’t want to turn, but she did and looked. She stood there in shock before calling 911.
Sato, meanwhile, called Luce.
“Hello Luce…? Can you come and get Greer. I’ll be arranging for her to have the day off.”
Luce was about to go out for a walk and paused. “Why? What happened?”
“Well… her car exploded.”
Sato watched as the fire from the wreckage managed to stay only on the car, not traveling anywhere away from it. Luce half shouted. “WHAT?! Is she ok?”
“Oh she’s fine. She’s standing a safe distance away calling 911 it seems. This does confirm how her luck works.”
“Satoshi…. Fine I’m on my way. Tell Greer not to worry and we’re going to the store after I get her.”
“Of course. See y-” and Luce hung up already. He knew Luce was upset but really, he had only done what Greer asked. Maybe he was just worried about if Greer had gotten hurt.
