Sky makes a 'Yeah, that's fair' face while Valerie once again looks surprised.
"I see. That part wasn't in the report," Valerie says, glancing at Sky, who straightens up.
"To be fair, Ma'am, I didn't know their connection to him," she defends.
"That's quite alright, just next time make sure to report the full incident. You never know what details might be relevant to later issues," Valerie says, then looks back at me. "So, what do you make of this deal?"
"Honestly? I don't trust him. The moment we left him with Leon, he ran off to rejoin the Widow's, and before that, he hurt my sister," I tell her.
"But?" She urges, knowing I'm unsure of my final answer.
I glance at the others, who are all now looking at me expectantly. I know what we have to do, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. We have to get Dani and Josh back, make sure that they're okay. Every moment I spend not knowing if they're dead or alive eats away at my mind, especially knowing that Dani could very well be dead, and that would be on me. The ache in my chest hasn't gone away ever since she was taken, especially with so many things left unsaid.
I sigh, rubbing my eyes. "Unfortunately, if we want to find the new Widow base that took them, we need Matt's help, and the only way we can get it is by letting him come with us."
"Plus," Sparrow adds, "if it's the same camp that's been doing these raids against the Valkyrie, we can kill two birds with one stone."
"You've already done the Valkyrie a great service," Valerie says with a smile. "For that, we're in your debt. If you are willing to use Matt to find your friends, all we would need is the location of the base, and we can take care of the rest. After all," Valerie looks at me this time, "it seems like there are people after you, and the more time you spend here in the city, the more of a chance they have of finding you here."
"Wait, what?" I question. "What about you, guys? If we leave, Atlast could come and attack you!"
"They can attack an empty base all they like," she grins. "But they can't hurt what isn't there."
"Hold up," Sky shakes her head, taking a step towards Valerie. "What are you talking about?"
"With all of these skirmishes happening lately," Valerie says, "we've been planning on relocating to a better vantage point. Namely, to the Hyatt Regency."
"But that place is huge!" Sky argues. "It's bound to be full of Feral's and nesting grounds!"
"I've been sending scouts every week to clear the place out. Currently, the first five floors are clear, and the rest have been blocked off," Valerie comments. "We've slowly begun moving supplies there and securing the perimeter. We've even picked up several new recruits who are willing to help us, both to clear the hotel, and to get rid of the Widow's in the area."
Sky's jaw drops and Sparrow whistles low.
"Wow," I comment. "You guys have been pretty busy lately."
"Indeed," Valerie grins. "When we heard what happened at the CDC, we figured something like this might happen, and we took precautions. The generators are currently being prepped, and once they're finished, we'll begin moving our people over there, little by little so not to get the attention of the Widow's or Feral's in the area."
"I see," I say, glancing over at the map and all of the notes scribbled onto it. There are several places marked as safe, a few X-ed out in red, and multiple routes highlighted for the Valkyrie to take when they start relocating. "When we find the camp, we'll report their location back to you," I tell her.
"That's all we'll need," Valerie nods. "So you've made your decision, then?"
"Yeah," I sigh. "We'll let Matt come with us to find Dani and Josh. After that, you can have him back if you want."
"Yeah, we really don't want him back," Sky scoffs.
"Well we don't want him either," I return. "If he travels with us, there's no telling what he might do when he loses his temper again."
Sky shrugs. "Ditch him. I know I would."
"Because that worked out so well last time..." I grumble.
Sparrow pats my shoulder. "We'll figure something out. For now, let's go let him know we're taking his offer."
I just know that this isn't going to end well for us in the long run, but I really don't have a choice. Here's to hoping that I won't have to kill Matt.
