I couldn't shake off the feeling of being stared so I turned and met the dark eyes of my parasite. He raised an eyebrow and continued to stare at me. I closed my eyes and tried to ignore him. It was all his fault. His fault that my life was ruined.
"It's not mine."
My head snapped up and I stared at the bored-looking god before me. He sighed when he saw my look. He pushed his hair back and looked away. I turned to the goddess and prompted an answer from her. She sighed and looked away from me.
"I hate to agree with this cretin but... he's right. It's not his fault."
"But he's the reason Lilith killed me." I was surprisingly calm.
"He's not the reason Hecate decided to kill you." Nyx corrected me.
I scowled at her and crossed my arms, "I remember... I remember right before I woke up- I remember you said there was a price to me getting to live. What is it?"
Nyx glanced at me before she turned to look at Erebus pointedly. He ignored her look and instead turned to face me with an exasperated look on his face.
"Listen, kid. I'm sorry your best friend tried to kill you and will probably hunt you down now that you're alive again but it's not really my fault." He dragged his hand through his hair as he huffed, "I have no idea what Hecate thinks she's doing but killing me every time I reincarnate isn't going to solve her personal vendetta against me or whatever."
"Wait, she has been killing all your previous hosts?"
"Yes, no matter how much I try to just live alongside my host and do absolutely nothing. She tries and tries to kill me every single time."
I look down at my hands and licked my lips. Is it really his fault? He never did anything to me while I acted as his host. I never felt anything weird until he created a semi-corporeal form. Is it really his fault?
"Hecate..." I turn to look at Nyx who spoke, "Was always an overachiever. I feel like this is her form of completing a prophecy that never had any meaning to it. it had no drive, so it just ended up voiding itself."
"Prophecy...?" I blinked as I looked at the goddess in front of me.
"Oh my- she's still hung up on that?" Erebus hissed out as he fell back onto my bed. "I mean, I already conquered the world once! Once! She already defeated me with her little band of misfits- what more can she do now? I can't believe she's still stuck in that century."
Erebus continued to rant and I stopped listening to what he said. Would Lilith really kill me? Would she really listen to the goddess? I smiled bitterly to myself. Maybe she did. Maybe she had more faith and trust in the very person that she's attached to than me. More faith in a stranger with power than to her friend that did nothing wrong.
"Nyx-" The dark haired woman turned to look at me with a tilted head. "-does the host or vessel have free will?"
"Most of the time." Nyx responded lightly, "As the parasites use up power and energy just to control a body that isn't theirs it is hard and tiresome. Especially when the person or host is unwilling. To be able to fully and easily possess and control the body, the host has to be willing and allow the deity to gain control. Complete trust."
"Complete... trust..."
I clenched my hands into fists. Complete trust for the diety to smoothly gain control of the body's actions. I glared at the bedhseets. So Lilith truly believed that I was evil.
"Kid, are you-"
"Do you want to conquer the world again?"
I could see the shock in not only Erebus' face but with how his body stiffened. Nyx also seemed to look at me with concern and wide eyes. She stood up from her place at the end of my bed and leaned close towards me. She placed a hand on my forehead and I tried to swat it away from me.
"Did the spell have some after effects?"
"No." I scowled at her. "I'm doing this to spite Lilith. She thought I was some great evil jsut because he-" I pointed at a still catatonic Erebus, "-is using me as host. She believed some... some stranger instead of me, her best friend!"
"Ambrose..." Nyx sighed as she retracted her hand to pinch the bridge of her nose. "Please think about this."
"No way!" Erebus jumped up and looked at me with wide eyes. "Finally, some action!"
"Erebus!" Nyx whacked Erebus from behind his head. "Do not encourage him!"
"Oh come on, Nyx." Erebus grinned as he dodged another physical attack from Nyx. "You know you want to see the world burn once more."
Nyx's lips thinned into a fine line when she turned to look at me, "You cannot back out once you've decided, Ambrose."
"I will show her." I sneered as I pushed myself off the bed. I walked towards my mirror and stared at my reflection, "I'll show her that she made a mistake. I'll show her that she made the wrong choice."
Erebus appeared at my side with a large grin on his face. He placed both his hands on my shoulders and leaned close to me, "This should be fun."
"You two..." Nyx shook her head and crossed her arms. She approached me with a stern look on her eyes before she placed a hand on my head, "If you truly wish to follow through... You will have to find two other people to help you."
Erebus pouted from his spot over my shoulder, "Whaaaattt? But those two are such booorreeesss."
"They will prove to be great allies, especially with Hecate on the hunt for them."
"But they still probably hate me." Erebus groaned as he threw his head back.
"You will deal with it." Nyx glared at the being of darkness.
"Alright..." I nodded my head. I paused as I continued to stare into the mirror. My reflection was not alone. On my right was Nyx who gave me an encouraging smile. On my left was Erebus who grinned with excitement and glee. I closed my eyes and nodded at them both. "But what about my parents?"
"Who?" Erebus tilted his head to the side innocently. I glare at his reflection.
Nyx sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose, "That was the price. I'm sorry Ambrose but-"
"It's fine." I sighed and let my gaze fall to the ground.
I tightened my grip on the table of the vanity as anger surged through me. This was another thing Lilith took away from me. My family. If she hadn't tried to kill me, I wouldn't have made that deal. It's all her and Hecate's fault.
"So, partner..." Erebus tightened his grip on my shoulders, "What do you say to world domination? Because for me, it's been a while and I can't wait for excitement this time around."
"Yeah..." I let a smirk crawl up to my face, "The world will burn for her mistake."
Nyx sighed and patted my head. She smiled at me through the mirror, "It seems like Hecate made a big mistake today."
"If her mistakes end up with me having fun? Then she should make more." Erebus' grin didn't promise anything good.
"So, what to do first?" I looked up to the two beings who stood over my shoulders.
"First, we look for-"
"No, first I teach you how to use my powers." Erebus cut Nyx off.
Before I could respond, Erebus pushed himself back into me. I gasped as the cold touch of his incorporeal body entered mine and he disappeared. Nyx closed her eyes and breathed out through her nose as I stare into the mirror. Slowly, a dark purple bled into my black eyes and my hair turned darker- almost as dark as Nyx's hair. My skin turned paler and strands of my hair started to look like it defied gravity.
"Wha-what happened?"
I watched as my reflection grinned back at me. This time, it was different. My face didn't move, it was purely the reflection. Soon, its mouth moved to form words and I heard a voice echo in my mind, "We became one."
I screeched and jumped away from the mirror, holding a hand to my chest as I took heavy breaths. How? What? WHEN?
"Stop screaming in your head, kiddo- it's giving me a headache."
The reflection continued to speak and appear in the mirror despite my distance away from it. Nyx pinched the bridge of her nose as she placed a calming hand on my shoulder, "Don't worry. You are still... you and Erebus is still a separate entity. My gods, Erebus explain better."
"What, then what did he mean by 'We become one'?" I look at Nyx with a touch of panic.
"It means it's a lot easier for you to use his powers and it is also a lot easier for him to contact you. He doesn't necessarily control your actions physically however he can use reflections to do as he pleases. It's more like... you share the body but you move in the real world and he moves in the reflection."
"I-I see..." I took a deep breath and looked at the mirror that contained a grinning Erebus, "It just... startled me I guess. With the change in looks and all... I'm not really fond of being controlled."
"I can see that, kiddo." Erebus chuckled, "You're a lot like me than I first thought."
I smiled back at him and gave a shaky nod. This might be a bit unsettling to see but I was happy I wasn't alone. I was happy I had people to trust. I look up at Erebus and see a friend I can count on for a good time. When I turn to Nyx, I see a friend I can trust and confide in. Unlike her. Unlike Lilith. Unlike she, who thought that betraying me for some deity who didn't even know me was the best idea. I smiled. Yes, unlike her, these two will be with me.
